Saving Private Ryan Permission Slip
April 28, 2009 I will show the opening D-Day scene from the movie Saving Private Ryan to my U.S. History classes next few week. This movie is rated “R.” The scene I plan to use shows characters using profanity while graphically depicting the violence associated with Allied D-Day invasion. Students will be permitted to view the movie only with parent/guardian permission. If you do not want your child to view this scene s/he will be offered an alternative assignment in another room. We’ll have been studying World War II for a few weeks. In addition to normal class work, students have watched documentaries to gain a better understanding of the “deep and lasting impact of the war.” I believe that this clip is the most accurate portrayal of what American soldiers experienced on the beaches of Normandy, June 6, 1944. Sincerely,
