                             FOCUS…
sometimes it’s easier said than done!
Going to the optometrist can be an exercise in concentrated focus. Trying
to see if I needed a new prescription, my optometrist asks me to look into
the lenses on a big “binocular” piece of equipment. Then, one-by-one, he
moves different lenses in front of my eyes asking, “Which
one is better…then, better or worse?” And this goes
on for a while, going back and forth until he finally
says, “okay, that’s fine…we’re done!”
The problem for me is, sometimes distinguishing
one lens’ clarity over the other is difficult.
Sometimes the difference is subtle. But that’s
the ultimate goal of any optometrist… to help
you find clarity and focus!
That’s the general idea with the Youth Ministry
Coordination Team at the Virginia Baptist
Mission Board…to bring clarity and focus to
your ministry with students. How is your focus
with regard to missions? What about music?
What about leadership development? What about
transitioning your students from youth group to
college or the working world? How about your ministry to
parents? What about small groups, discipleship or general youth ministry
programming? There are a lot of lenses to look through these days in order
to develop a balanced approach to youth ministry. We can help move the
lenses back and forth so you can fine-tune your approach and provide
the clarity you need to strengthen your work with students. So…how are
things looking in your youth ministry? We’d be delighted to come, listen
and offer support to strengthen your churches vision for youth ministry.
The following pages introduce you to the specialists that work in a variety
of disciplines related to youth ministry. Each has their own page, sharing
with you their passion for youth ministry and the programs/events
they coordinate throughout the year. In addition, the comprehensive,
chronological calendar at the end of this booklet assists you in your annual
youth ministry planning.
Need clarity or focus? We can help. We are a phone call or email away.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY
The Children’s Ministry Strategist’s primary area of ministry
centers on equipping leaders who relate to and minister with
children, birth through sixth grade. One of her passions is to
strengthen ministry to and with children, and to help churches to
transform children and their families to be like Jesus.

YOUTH MINISTRY COORDINATION TEAM BOOKLET 2010
     COLLEGIATE/YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY
The Collegiate/Young Adult Ministry Strategist’s role is to help
college students and young adults in that extremely vulnerable
and critical place in their lives as they transition from youth to
adulthood. The Collegiate/Young Adult Ministry Strategist works
primarily with college-age students, but is very passionate about
making sure that we hand off the baton from our youth ministries
to our universities. Statistics show that more than 50% of students
drop out of any significant church life when they get to college. It
is important as part of our overall strategy in the Emerging Leaders SUSAN McBRIDE
Team to help make that transition from high school to college Emerging Leaders
smooth and connected. Team Leader
College-bound seniors in high school are invited to participate in susan.mcbride@vbmb.org
all of the conferences that are offered through conferencing and 800.ALL.BGAV x2242
missions in the Baptist Collegiate Ministry program. The following
are some of the avenues of entry that will help your high school
seniors connect with the BCM on their campus:
   • The Collegiate Fall Retreat is a conference for all college
students in the state to come together for worship and
       teaching.
   • The Spring Leadership Training Conference, specifically
focused on missions, is for training all those who are going
out from us during the summer and offers some leadership
       training.
   • GO (Glocal Outreach) Teams are teams of college-bound
high school seniors and university students from our BCMs
throughout the state (10-15 students) who go overseas for a
2-3 week mission immersion experience. Team members
will experience a community environment as they prepare
and are placed in accountability relationships during the
spring semester. They will be thoroughly and intentionally
trained during the Spring LTC Conference at Eagle Eyrie
and then will attend an intense retreat before being sent
overseas. Community building and training are provided
as they prepare for life-changing possibilities in overseas
       missions.
For more information about any of these activities, check out
www.vabcm.org or email Susan McBride at susan.mcbride@vbmb.org.

MISSIONS
The Virginia Missions Coordinator’s role is to assist churches in
connecting with important mission events and projects such as
cultural exchange opportunities, Impact! Mission Camps, mission
learning experiences, and other projects. Dean Miller serves
in this role with a passion for coordinating these events as well
as another one of his key responsibilities – the “why” of mission
involvement. It is one thing to simply attend an event but it is a
completely different animal when a person comes away with a
DEAN MILLER healthy understanding of why a person might become engaged
Virginia Missions in these activities. Educating our churches and volunteers to be
Coordinator spiritually prepared and to interpret their experience in light of
dean.miller@vbmb.org their walking and calling in and with Christ is an important facet of
 800.ALL.BGAV x7264 this work.
A new part of this role is to assist churches in creating new
ministries that reach out to those people within a community that
have been pushed to the margins of society. What type of new
ministry can your youth group begin that will reach people with
                       the love of Christ?
There are a number of events being planned for students, with
additional events that can be customized for churches.
