Homemade Play Dough Most homemade play dough recipes call for you to cook it in a saucepan. but I've found that this just makes a mess of my sauce pan so I do it a bit differently and it comes out perfect every time. 1 cup flour 1 cup water 1/2 cup salt 2 tablespoons Cream of Tartar 1 tablespoon oil Bring water to a boil on your stove top. Place all dry ingredients in your stand mixer bowl (or any heat proof bowl) with dough hook attached. Use liquid cup measure to measure out the hot water. Add food coloring of your choice to the water and stir until dissolved. Add colored water to dry ingredients in mixing bowl. Turn on low until all dry ingredients are incorporated. Then turn it up to medium speed and allow dough hook to do the work for you. Place in a gallon size Ziploc bag until ready to use.
