Springbox Model Advance Preparation Instructions
Prepare the materials in advance following the instructions below. Each group of 2-4
students will need a set of materials.
Plastic containers with lids (e.g., food storage containers); 3 per 2-4 students
Scissors or sharp object to punch holes in plastic container
Aluminum pans; 1 per 2-4 students
a. Use a scissors or sharp object to punch holes (just large enough for a drinking straw to
fit) in the three containers as shown below. Make sure that the lower holes on each
container are at the same height, about 0.5” above the surface of the table.

b. Use masking tape and a permanent marker to label the three containers as shown.
c. Fill the middle container (labeled “Filtration”) with some gravel.
d. Label the aluminum pan “Groundwater”. Punch a hole in one side of the pan. The
hole should be at the same height as the lowest holes in the plastic containers and equal in
e. Cut the straws into two segments (about 3” and 6”).
f. Lay out all construction materials (three containers; aluminum pan; straws; modeling
clay) on a work table.
