Getting Smart with Smartboards

Maximizing Efficiency with Microsoft Outlook
Instructor: Julie Gallagher For all Faculty & Staff 6th Grade Computer Lab Dates: November 13th & 20th @ 3:00 – 5:30 (Total 5hrs) Max 15 participants Email is not the only use for Microsoft Outlook. In this course I will show you how to use this one program to help make sure you never miss an appointment again, complete lesson planning, create to do lists, and actually do them all in a timely manner. This class will primarily use the in-school version rather than the Internet version of Microsoft Outlook. Bring with you your plan book, appointments, and to-do lists so that you can make the best use of your time!

This course will help you get your website up and running. Sign up for one or all three sessions to become a website pro. 11/7/07 Course 1: 90 minutes on how upload documents/links and add events to the calendar. 11/12/07 Course 2: 90 minutes on how to work with the content boxes and how to add clipart and animations. 11/19/07 Course 3: 90 minutes on how to work with the advanced content editor (formatting, adding links, etc.)

eSchoolData: Gradebook
Presenter: Melissa Brennan Where: 8th grade Computer Lab When: 10/29, 11/5, 1/15, 1/22 Time: 2:30 PM – 3:30 PM Audience: This session is designed for MS/HS Faculty members who have had little to no experience using eSchoolData’s gradebook and those who need a refresher. Description: This hands-on workshop introduces the gradebook feature of eSchoolData to participants. Setting up the gradebook is reviewed. Objectives: By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to set up their gradebook as well as learn how to copy their gradebook into other classes. Requirements: Participants for this workshop are encouraged to bring the following materials: 1) Hard copy of current and upcoming student assignments and grades IMPORTANT: Meeting workshop objectives will depend on materials participants have available. eSchoolData: Printing Gradebook Reports and Granting Parent Portal & Student eLocker Access to Grades
Presenter: Melissa Brennan Where: 8th grade Computer Lab When: 10/30, 11/7, 1/16, 1/23 Time: 2:30 PM – 3:30 PM Audience: This session is designed for MS/HS Faculty members who would like assistance using eSchoolData’s Gradebook Report feature as well as the Parent Portal and Student eLocker features.
Description: This session introduces the Report feature of Gradebook. Participants will make templates in order to generate reports as well as explore creating full class and individual grade reports. The session will also show participants how to make grades available to students on their eLocker and to parents registered on the Parent Portal. Objectives: By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to use the reports tool and grant access to grades for both parents and students in the gradebook portion of eSchoolData. Requirements: Participants must have at least one of their courses gradebook set up in order to participate. Net Support School
Presenter: Melissa Brennan Where: 8th grade Computer Lab When: TBD Time: TBD Audience: This session is designed for MS/HS Faculty members who are interested in learning how to use the monitoring software, Net Support School that is available in all computer labs and the library. Description: Net Support School provides teachers with the ability to monitor and interact with students individually or as a class. This hands-on workshop will look at the different features of the software and how to implement them in the classroom. Objectives: By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to implement different features of Net Support School including but not limited to: logging off workstations, blocking Internet access, sending private messages to workstations, chatting with workstations, registering students workstations, and controlling workstations.
eLocker – Website: Getting Started
Presenter: Melissa Brennan Where: 8th grade Computer Lab When: 11/27, 12/5, 12/12 Time: 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM Audience: This session is designed for MS/HS Faculty members who have had little or no experience using the eLocker website feature and those who need a refresher. Description: This hands-on workshop will address the five buttons faculty currently have access to on their websites. Objectives: By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to post material to their website. Enhancing Student Learning
Clever and Effective Study Aides Instructor: Eileen Gallagher Often times we tell students to study for the test, but they don’t know how to go about doing so. In this class, Eileen Gallagher will teach you how to create specific study aides, many constructed from recyclable materials, which you’ll be able to pass on to your students right away. This workshop will use the binder of reading strategies developed for summer curriculum work. This 5 hour workshop will enable teachers to be introduced to one or two strategies each session, practice those strategies in their classroom and return the following week to share with colleagues student work samples as well as their experiences integrating theses strategies into their classroom. Reading Research Study Group
Contact person: Doreen Saccomano Working with a partner to serve as a critical friend, each teacher will receive information from three books : When Kid’s Can’t Read What Teachers Can Do, Differentiated Instruction in the English Classroom and Classroom Instruction that Works. Teachers will break into three study groups and read through their chosen book, chunking sections for study and practice. The whole group will meet every two weeks to discuss sections of their reading, share lessons, student work, accomplishments and plan for intervisitations among participants. Academic Intervention Study Group

The Overview Workshop presents multisensory structured language principles and techniques of the Wilson Reading System. A Wilson trainer describes general program concepts and provides hands-on instruction in the lesson plan format. The topics include:
Reading research Basic principles of language structure How to teach language with direct, multisensory methods Review and reinforcement Program implementation Student placement, progress and monitoring Lesson planning and procedures in the Wilson Reading System – modeling and practice

Using the Briarcliff MS/HS Databases & Library Resources (NETS 2, 5, 6)
Instructor: Tamara Hervey Target Audience: MS/HS Staff – all disciplines Four hours (two sessions) (class limit 15) HS Computer Lab Date: Tuesday Oct. 30 & Wed, Nov. 7 Time: 2:30 – 3:30
Participants will gain hands-on experience in using our MS/HS Network resources and databases. New databases include Facts on File: Ancient, American and World History and J-Stor. Others included will be CQ Researcher; magazine indices (Ebscohost & Proquest); New York Times On Line; AP Photo Archives; Eric Search; Health and Wellness; LitFinder; SIRS & SIRS Decades; Maps 101; Student Resource Center and Science Direct. We will also cover how to access our online databases from home and how to use the Westchester &BOCES Library sites. This course can be repeated if taken before because the databases continue to expand and change, along with your curriculums.
Using the Todd Databases & Library Resources (NETS 2, 5, 6) Target Audience: Todd Staff – all disciplines Four hours (two sessions) (class limit 15) Todd Library Media Center Instructor: Tara Phethean Date: Monday, Dec. 3rd & Mon., Dec. 10th Participants will gain hands-on experience in using our Todd databases, including the new database Facts for Learning. Others included will be Kid InfoBits, AP Multimedia Archives; EBSCO Host, Gale Databases; World Book Online; Grolier Online; and Teaching Books. We will also cover how to use the Westchester Library System catalog and databases.
Using Video Streaming Through United Streaming and Power Media Plus Target Audience: MS/HS staff – all disciplines Two hours (one session) (class limit 15) Date: 12/5/07 Location: HS LMC Computer Lab Instructors: Tamara Hervey & Teka McCabe Have you used video streaming with your students? Learn how to enhance your lessons by using United Streaming and Power Media Plus, comprehensive digital media libraries with thousands of educational videos correlated to state standards, digital images, clip art, pod casts and more. Participants will register and get hands-on experience in using these video streaming services. They will also learn how to use the Student Resource Center database as a gateway to United Streaming.
Got Art?
Instructor: Jessica Dubin Opened to Everyone Do you ever wish you could combine more arts related projects in your classroom? Are you a teacher in the related arts who is interested in crosscurricular collaboration (even between the related arts)? If either of these descriptions fit, then this is the workshop for you. This workshop will provide the opportunity to design inter-disciplinary lessons in the arts using cross-curricular standards. We will begin by looking at a few successful lessons that combine ELA, Math and SS with visual arts. After that, participants can form groups to work with one another or ask for my help as an “art consultant” to establish the framework of an interdisciplinary lesson. Art materials for making a model will be provided. Hands-on assistance will be offered. Come armed with your ideas and your enthusiasm. Enhancing Personal Wellness
Stress Reduction Through Physical Activity 11/5/07 & 11/7/07 – 3:15-5:15 pm Class will meet in the Fitness Center located in the High School Gymnasium Facilitators: Andrea Thau & Al Meola Class will learn all new and innovative equipment used in the Fitness Center and will be taught how to properly train body with specific progression and safe methods. Our course will range from developing optimal fitness to stress management, weight loss, personal growth and therapeutic rehabilitation. Class will get you on the right track and offer you the options and tools you need to make meaningful, positive changes for a full and balanced life. Classes will be offered twice and will be 2 hours in duration in will be limited to 15 participants. *Due to limited class size, please sign up for one class only
