Finding articles using keywords in databases and indexes
Most times when you are doing research (or other assignments) you may not know the exact
journal names. In these cases you can use article databases and indexes to search on your area of
interest. The databases will then let you know which journals contain articles that are relevant to
your search. These journals may be available either in electronic or print formats.

Search Tips: Subject Terms
1. Use the Thesaurus
Type the key word in the
Browse for box.
This will let you know what
other terms this database
might use.
For example browsing on
Aged suggest that terms like
older people should be used
instead.
It is also a good way to find
out if your term is spelt
differently.
2. Use database shortcuts when typing in your keywords
Truncation:
In many databases the use of the symbol: * can be used to cover different word endings
For example, manage* also retrieves managed, mangages, manager, managerial,
management etc.
Wildcards
In Ebsco a ? can be used as a wild card. It will stand for any character
For example, wom?n will retrieve woman and women
Proximity
In Ebsco databases you may find words that fall close to each other with the use of n and
a number between two words
e.g. older people n8 government policies
You will get records that contain government policies affect the lives of older people…
and older people were affected by the following government policies…, and any record
that has classroom and management within 8 words of each other.
Note: it is important that you leave the search setting as default fields when you do a
proximity search.
