Course Description:
This class provides students with a good background of statistical ideas and reasoning
rather than statistical methods. In this class students learn many of the fundamental
principals that underlie collecting data, organizing it, and making conclusions from it.

Course Objectives:
To give you the opportunity to learn statistical tools that you can use to systematically
improve the quality of your work and personal lives, at the present time and in the future.

Examinations: Tests and Quizzes
   1. There will be four 75-minute tests.
   2. There will be three 30-minute quizzes.
   3. Tentative dates for the tests and quizzes are as follow:
      Quiz 1: Jan. 18         Test 1: Feb. 1
      Quiz 2: Feb.15          Test 2: Mar. 1
      (Quiz 3: Mar. 22)** Test 3: Mar. 29
      Quiz 4: April 12        Test 4: April 26 (Final exam) 7:30-9:30 am
      ** Note that Quiz3 will not be counted even though it will be given in class.
   4. All exams are closed book, closed notes. However, you are allowed to have one
      page (with size 8.5x11, double-sided) of notes and formulae for each exam. I will
      provide all the tables that you will need in the exam.

Homework: Homework problems will be assigned at the end of each chapter. It is the
responsibility of the student to keep current. Although homework will not be collected, it
is the best way to prepare for quizzes and tests.

Grading: Grades will be figured using the following weights:
      Quiz average 20%                 Four tests will count 20% each
      That is, final score = quiz average + 0.2*(test1 + test2 + test3 + test4) + extra
      where quiz average = (quiz1 + quiz2 + quiz4) / 3
               extra = extra credit from attendance
      and maximum final score is 102 because
               maximum quiz average = (20+20+20) / 3 = 20
               maximum test score = 0.2 * (100 + 100 + 100 + 100) = 80
               and if you get extra = 2
      I will keep every possible decimal places until final score is calculated; then
      it will be rounded to have only two decimal places.

Letter grade assignments are determined as follows (after rounding to second decimal
A = 93 or above B = 83-86.99        C = 73-76.99       D = 63-66.99
A- = 90-92.99      B- = 80-82.99 C- = 70-72.99        D- = 60-62.99
B+ = 87-89.99      C+ = 77-79.99 D+ = 67-69.99          F = below 60
** There is no curving of grades in this course.

Course Policies
   1. Attendance: Attendance is not required for grading purposes. Students are
      responsible for all material presented during class. Students are responsible for
      being aware of all announcements made during class. In addition, if you miss
      fewer than six classes, you will get 2 points as extra credit. Counting starts from
      January 18, Thursday. Attendance Check List will be passed in each class. No
      excuses will be accepted and this is the reason why missing up to 5 classes is
   2. Grading Complaints: Give me your work in question and a clear, brief, written
      explanation of why you think you deserve additional credit. The written statement
      must be provided within two classes after the work is graded and available for

   3. Missed Tests or Quizzes: There are ONLY TWO cases for makeup. One is, you
      inform me of a time conflict in advance (at least 24 hours in advance) and I will
      permit you to have a makeup. Another is, there is an emergency situation that
      prevents you from coming to classroom on a quiz or test day. For this, please
      contact me as soon as possible (within 24 hours) by using following options to
      report your situation.

   4. Calculators: No wireless device or personal digital assistant (PDA) may be used
      as a calculator during exams. Graphing calculators are permitted.

   5. Class website: A class website will be used in this class. Notes, assignments,
      announcements, and grades will be posted. Remember you are responsible for
      information given in class. This website is not a substitute for class.
