Statics and Mechanics of Materials 88-89 2nd Semester Prof.: Dr. Fatouraee
Homework #1 Page 1 of 3 Deadline: Next TA Session

Part 1 Draw a complete FBD (Free Body Diagram) for each of these statics.
Guideline: Each FBD must include Forces, Dimensions, External Moments and NOT the source of forces.
Magnitude of forces and moments are not important, but pay attention to the relative geometry.

(a) (b)

Part 2 Determine all forces in this truss. Instead of solving two trusses, solve this figure with two
methods (Section and Nod). Then compare your answers.
Guideline: For NOD method, first calculate ‘A’ and ‘E’ Forces, the follow these nods: E, A, B, C, D. Know
that this is not the only way, It’s a suggestion.
Guideline: For section method you must also calculate ‘A’ and ‘E’ Forces, then have your first section
going through ‘AD’, ‘DB’, and ‘BC’.

Part 3 Calculate the center of area in each of the shapes
Guideline: in the first shape you can use table of different parts. In (b) you can draw a picture of the
shape, then start to calculate.

(a)

(b) A curve of y2 = 4 − x, with 0 ≤ x ≤ 4
