Exporting References from EBSCO databases into RefWorks
1. Conduct your search.
2. Click on ADD TO FOLDER located under the reference you wish to import.
3. To the right of the list of references you will see FOLDER HAS ITEM in a yellow
box with your selected reference listed. Under that you will see FOLDER VIEW.
Click on it.
4. Put a checkmark in the box to the left of each reference you want to import.
5. Click on the icon with the green arrow (EXPORT) located at the top of the page.
6. Checkmark the box saying REMOVE THESE ITEMS FROM FOLDER AFTER
SAVING and put a dot in the circle next to DIRECT EXPORT TO REFWORKS.
7. Click SAVE. This should launch you into RefWorks. Log in to your account if it
doesn’t log you in automatically.
8. You should now read that your references have been imported. Click on VIEW
LAST IMPORTED FOLDER.
9. RefWorks gives you one more chance to pick the references you really wish to
go into your designated folder. Put a checkmark in the box to the left of each
reference you want.
10. Click on the PUT IN FOLDER drop down menu and select the correct folder.
11. Click OK.
12. Click OK again.
Exporting References from the OVID database into Refworks
1. Conduct your search.
2. Put checkmarks in the boxes to the left of the references you are selecting.
3. Go to the left side of the screen and in the column named RESULT FORMAT,
click on DIRECT EXPORT.
4. Scroll down to the column named ACTIONS and click on SAVE.
5. The screen will come up with a dot marked next to EXPORT RESULTS TO
REFWORKS.
6. Click the CONTINUE button.
7. If RefWorks doesn’t automatically launch on the next page, click the hyperlink
titled CLICK THIS LINK TO OPNE THE DOCUMENT.
8. This should launch you into RefWorks. Log in to your RefWorks account.
9. The page should now tell you that your references have been imported. Click on
VIEW LAST IMPORTED FOLDER.
10. RefWorks gives you one more chance to pick the references you really want to
go into your folder. Put a checkmark in the box to the left of each reference you
want.
11. Click on the PUT IN FOLDER drop down menu and select the correct folder.
12. Click OK.
13. Click OK again.
Exporting References from the INFOTRAC databases into RefWorks
1. Conduct your search.
2. Put checkmarks in the boxes to the left of the references you are selecting.
3. Go up to the top left of the page and look for MARKED ITEMS. Click on it.
4. Look for the small red box on the top left. Click on CITATION TOOLS.
5. Go to the section marked EXPORT TO THIRD PARTY SOFTWARE. Check
RefWorks. Hit EXPORT.
6. This should launch you into RefWorks.*** Log in to your RefWorks account.
7. This page should now tell you that your references have been imported. Click on
VIEW LAST IMPORTED FOLDER.
8. RefWorks gives you one more chance to pick the references you really want to
go into your folder. Put a checkmark in the box to the left of each reference you
want.
9. Click on the PUT IN FOLDER drop down menu and select the correct folder.
10. Click OK.
11. Click OK again.
Importing References from GOOGLE SCHOLAR into RefWorks
1. On the main search page for Google Scholar, click on Scholar Preferences to
the right of the search box. Scroll down the page to Bibliography Manager. Put a
dot in the circle titled SHOW LINKS TO IMPORT CITATIONS TO and in the drop
down menu click on RefWorks. Click on SAVE PREFERENCES at the bottom of
the page.
2. Conduct your search.
3. Each record displayed with have a link beneath it titled IMPORT INTO
REFWORKS.
4. Click on that link and you will be launched into RefWorks. Log in to your account.
5. Once you log in, you are automatically brought to the EDIT view of that
reference.
6. Look at the toolbar at the top of the page. The first word is REFERENCES. Move
your cursor to it and scroll down to the first thing on the list: ADD NEW
REFERENCE.
7. A template will open up with fields already filled in.
8. The first box (VIEW FIELDS USED BY) is asking what citation style you want to
use. If APA isn’t already showing in that box, then scroll down to find APA-
American Psychological Association and click on it.
9. The next box (IN FOLDER) is asking you what folder this reference should be
filed in. Click on the name of the correct folder.
10. The next box (REF TYPE) wants you to indicate exactly what type of reference it
is: a journal article, a web page, a book, a newspaper article, etc. Click on the
correct type.
11. Now you will need to select a SOURCE TYPE. Click ELECTRONIC.
12. Click on SAVE REFERENCE at the top of the page.
13. If this is the only reference from Google Scholar that you are exporting at this
time, you are done. If you have more references to export from Google Scholar,
the link or tab that gets you back to Google Scholar should still be at the bottom
of your screen. Click on it and you’re back in Google Scholar ready to pick
another reference.
Importing References from PUBMED into RefWorks
1. Conduct your search.
2. Put a checkmark in the box to the left of each reference you want to import.
3. Go up to the DISPLAY box where it says SUMMARY, and click on the dropdown
menu arrow. Click on MEDLINE. The screen will refresh.
4. Now put a checkmark in the box to the left of each reference you want import.
5. Go up to the SEND TO box and click on the dropdown menu arrow. Click on
TEXT. The screen will refresh.
6. Hold down your <CONTROL> button and hit A. That will highlight everything on
the page.
7. Hold down your <CONTROL> button and hit C. That will make a copy of
everything on the page.
8. Go to the very top of the screen. Hit FILE, then NEW, then WINDOW. A new
browser will open up and the screen will look identical to what you were just
looking at.
9. Click on the address box showing the PubMed URL and delete it.
10. Type in www.refworks.com and hit ENTER.
11. Click LOGIN on the left side of the page and log in to your account.
12. Look at the toolbar at the top of the page. The first word is REFERENCES. Move
your cursor to it and scroll down to IMPORT. Click on it.
13. The first thing on the page should be the IMPORT FILTER/DATA SOURCE box.
If NLM PUBMED isn’t showing in that box, scroll through the alphabetical list
provided and click on it.
14. Next on the page should be DATABASE. It should say PUBMED.
15. Next you should see IMPORT REFERENCES INTO. Click on the dropdown
menu arrow and select the correct folder.
16. Now you will see a dot in the circle next to IMPORT DATA FROM THE TEXT
FILE. You don’t want the dot there. You want it in the circle next to IMPORT
DATA FROM THE FOLLOWING TEXT. Click on that empty circle to move the
dot.
17. Your cursor should be blinking in the blank white box. Hold down your
<CONTROL> button and hit V which will copy your references into that box.
18. Click on IMPORT.
19. The page should now tell you that your references have been imported. Click on
LAST IMPORTED FOLDER. You will see you PubMed references in the correct
folder.
Importing References from ERIC into RefWorks
1. Conduct your search.
2. Check ADD located to the upper right of each citation you wish to import. The
word will change to ADDED.
3. Once you have selected all of your citations, look for the CLIPBOARD icon and
click on # ITEMS IN MY CLIPBOARD.
4. Click on EXPORT CITATIONS. A new window will open.
5. Select CITATION MANAGER FILE. Click on DOWNLOAD.
6. You will be asked “DO YOU WANT TO SAVE THIS FILE?” Click on the SAVE
button.
7. A “SAVE AS” box appears. Designate where you would like this file saved
(example: to your Desktop.) The FILE NAME will say “CITATION.” Change that
to something meaningful to you. The SAVE AS TYPE will say .ris DOCUMENT.
***DO NOT CHANGE THE FILE TYPE!!!***
8. Click on SAVE.
9. A DOWNLOAD COMPLETE message will appear. Click on the CLOSE button.
10. Close out of ERIC and go into REFWORKS.
11. Click LOGIN on the left side of the page and log in to your account.
12. Look at the toolbar at the top of the page. The first word is REFERENCES. Move
your cursor to it and scroll down to IMPORT. Click on it.
13. The first on the page should be the IMPORT FILTER/DATA SOURCE box. Scroll
down to select ERIC – EDUCATION RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER.
14. Next on the page should be DATABASE. It should say ERIC.
15. Next you should see IMPORT REFERENCES INTO. Click on the dropdown
menu arrow and select the correct folder for your citation(s).
16. Now you will find a dot in the circle next to IMPORT DATA FROM THE
FOLLOWING TEXT FILE. There will be a blank white box beneath it and to the
right of the box you will see BROWSE. Click on it and look for your saved file.
When you find it, double-click on it and it will be loaded into the white box.
17. Click on IMPORT at the bottom of the page.
18. The page should now tell you that your references have been imported. Click on
LAST IMPORTED FOLDER. You will see you ERIC references in the correct
folder.
Adding References Manually into RefWorks
1. Go to www.refworks.com and log in to your account.
2. Look at the toolbar at the top of the page. The first word is REFERENCES. Move
your cursor to it and scroll down to the first thing on the list: ADD NEW
REFERENCE.
3. A template will open up for you to fill in the blanks manually.
4. The first box (VIEW FIELDS USED BY) is asking you what citation style you
want to use. If APA isn’t showing in that box, scroll down to find APA –
AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION and click on it.
5. The template will list the fields you need to fill in.
6. The next box (IN FOLDER) is asking you what folder this reference should be
filed in. Click on the correct folder.
7. The next box (REF TYPE) wants you to indicate what the reference is: a book, a
journal article, a web page, etc. Click on the correct type.
8. Now you will need to select a SOURCE TYPE. Was it in print or did you find it
electronically? Click on the correct source type.
9. There will be a green check mark next to the fields that you should try and fill in.
If you can’t fill them all in, that’s OK. Just provide what information you can.
10. When you’re done filling in the template, go back to the top of the page. If you
are going to be adding more references manually, click on SAVE & ADD NEW. If
this is it, or when you are through manually adding your references, click on
SAVE REFERENCE.
