UW Environmental Engineering Students enjoy the deserts of New Mexico after competing successfully at the 18th Annual WasteManagement Education and Research Consortium Environmental Design Contest held in April 2008. Two teams from UW participated in the annual competition at New Mexico State University where student teams design solutions for real world problems, and design and build fully operational bench-scale systems that are presented to a panel of judges comprised of environmental professionals. Sandford Fleming travel grants helped cover a significant part of their travel costs.

Message from the Chair
At a recent board meeting, we approved a budget that included $50,272 for the 2008/2009 Waterloo Awards Program that we provide for our engineering I want to congratulate this year’s winners of the Teaching Excellence Award; Ed Jernigan, Duane Cronin and Robert Jan van Pelt. The individuals who win the award clearly embody the goals of the Foundation in the way they provide leadership in and the engineering Faculty of education. Engineering The jointly Foundation undergraduate students. I remain convinced that the Waterloo programs and the details are given elsewhere in this report.
value-added aspects of the SFF activities and awards, both nationally and especially here at Waterloo, greatly enrich the engineering student’s academic environment. I believe that this fact will be obvious to you when you read this report, which by the way, is our thirty-second annual report. What began as an idea by a few farsighted faculty many years ago has paid tremendous dividends in enhancing and enriching the experience of our students at Waterloo. This is my last message as Chair as I complete my term this fall. However I am happy to report that Bill Wilson of E&CE will assume the position of Chair. Bill brings a wealth of experience to the position and I am sure will provide outstanding leadership to the Foundation. I wish to thank Monica Emelko for her significant contributions as the Waterloo Campus Committee Chair in ensuring that the above monies are well spent and Janet Metz for so ably representing Cooperative Education and Career services and running our near unmanageable list of academic and cooperative proficiency award winners. I say nearly unmanageable as we have to select the winners out of such an outstanding student body. Both Janet and Monica are completing their terms, but I am happy to say that both will stay involved with the Foundation. I would also like to welcome Rob Gorbet of E&CE back as a member of the board after a brief hiatus. What makes the Foundation such a success is the time and effort that the above and others contribute to the operation of SFF. All are obviously very interested in the well-being of the students in Waterloo Engineering. Over the years, the foundation has been supported by the contributions of time and money from undergraduate engineering students, faculty members, practicing and retired engineers and by corporations, both large and small. Students at Waterloo continue to demonstrate their support for the foundation by contributing the $6 fee levied each term on their fee statements. The fee is refundable upon request but students who elect this option are few and this fall the total refunds were less than 1%. These monies provide the funding for the many
administer this award. In addition, I offer my congratulations to the many winners of the Work Term Report Awards, Exchange Scholarships, Sandford Fleming Debates, Technical Speaker Competitions, Excellence in Design Awards and Sandford Fleming Teaching Assistant Excellence Awards. These awards and competitions play a major role in promoting excellence in engineering and communications. All of these students will receive
recognition at the Faculty of Engineering Awards Dinner. Congratulations are in order to Bahman Hadji who was this year’s winner of the Fisher Leadership Award. There were many strong contenders this year and it is always a pleasure to see such talent and enthusiasm among the student body. Cathy Freeman, our Office Manager for many years has recently stepped down, and I wish to take this opportunity to acknowledge her tremendous help over the past many years. She will be missed but we have been fortunate in finding an excellent replacement in Bettina Wahl and I welcome her to the team. Cathy and now Bettina with Jeff Weller, who remains our executive secretary and treasurer, carry the major burden of the Foundation’s administration. I greatly appreciate the help and advice provided by them.
The Foundation could not exist without the support of the Dean’s office and, on behalf of the board I wish to thank Dean Sedra for his continuing support of our activities. This has been a busy year and I am pleased that the Sandford Fleming Foundation has continued to have such a visible and strong impact on the engineering academic environment. ~Bill Lennox, Chair
