									                                     Stop the Insanity!

In the mid-90's, Susan Powter was revered as a self- help guru with a powerful message. Her "Stop the Insanity"
book was a bestseller that seemed to satisfy a craving in so many people. And it's my belief that her message is
still relevant today, almost two decades later, particularly when it comes to the lifestyle that many are
engaged in on an ongoing basis. Look around. So many people are trying to do so many things at once, trying
to wear so many hats at the same time, trying to accomplish more with less, trying to meet multiple
deadlines...the list literally goes on, and on, and on. You get the point.

In light of this state of the world, I often find in my coaching practice that I am faced with the question, how do
I get some balance in my life? This very question sparks a fire in me almost instantaneously, because I believe
that the very topic of “life balance” is misunderstood and therefore misaddressed by so many. What I know is
that people are craving a sense of balance, peace, ease, and tranquility. Let me assure you that all are
attainable, all are possible. So long as you know what you're looking for – and so long as you ditch the belief
that life balance is about time management; it’s not.

You see, the whole process of getting your life in balance begins with knowing what balance looks like for you.
And that's the critical point, which needs to be emphasized here: your vision of a balanced life may or may not
resemble someone else's vision of a balanced life. So ask yourself, what do you want in your life? In YOUR life
mind you, not the life of your partner, your children, your parents, your teachers, or any other persons of
influence. If you could wave a magic wand and create the life of your dreams, what would you have in it? I'm
asking you to go beyond the pat answers of "happiness", "wealth", "companionship", etc;. I'm asking you to get
really specific. Who would you hang around with? How would you relax? Where would you hang out? How
would you earn a living? How much of your life would you give over to your family? Your work? Your home
life? Your self-care? And once you've gotten clear on these answers, there's one more question to ask.

What's stopping you from having these things in your life RIGHT NOW?

The answer to this question provides the key to beginning to move towards your vision of balance.

You see, once you know what you want, and when you get clear about what's stopping you from having what
you want, you can take steps and make decisions that enable you to replace what you don't want, with what
you do want. It's a very liberating process. The challenge is that the whole process needs to be undertaken
consciously. You must make yourself aware of what you want in your life, what you will tolerate and what you
won't, what you will do and what you will not, and then make choices that align with that awareness. So get
clear, get focused and get moving -- towards the life that you really want. That is the secret to having a sense
of true balance, which in the end, is actually about fulfillment.
