LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL September 26, 2007 Dear EMHS Families: Oh, the weather! I am enjoying fall so very much. The angle of light during New Mexico’s fall is glorious to me. I hope this finds you all well. I hope you all aware of the support provided EMHS by the EMHS Foundation and its Trustees. If you don’t know about our foundation ask me or Lori Webster. Really, you could ask any staff member because we all know and respect the Foundation and Trustees. Each year for the past seven years the Foundation has sponsored the Fall NIGHT UNDER THE STARS GALA and these have raised more than $200,000 during those seven years that has directly supported student learning experiences at EMHS. What a gift! In addition, the Foundation took the risk eight years ago of taking out a loan to build the facility we occupy. These folks placed their trust in Governing Council and staff to provide a quality education for all students who attend our school. What a gift! That trust was well placed as EMHS has emerged as a charter of great integrity and rigor thanks to the hard work of the entire EMHS staff and community. True philanthropy is work that is done quietly and with no desire for public recognition. Gifts are given by

philanthropists because they see a need and wish to be of service. The EMHS Foundation and its Trustees are true philanthropists as are the many, many members of our community who support our school in every way. Philanthropy takes so many forms. EMHS families give us time, you are always there when a volunteer is needed; talent, you are always willing to lend your talent to any project we need completed; financial support, you generously provide supplies any time we ask; and the list goes on and on. For this we are also so grateful and humbled. If any of you would be willing to serve as a Foundation Trustee, please contact the school – it is an important mission and we do need your support. Thank you is a simple statement with profound meaning. I close this letter with a thank you to all of you who give so much to EMHS. Respectfully, Danielle Johnston AWARD WINNING TEACHER EMHS Teacher Kerri Lathrop was chosen to participate in the Toyota International Teacher Program. Twenty U.S. teachers, chosen as educational ambassadors this program, will spend 10 days this fall exploring the rich environmental heritage of the Galapagos Islands, a designated World Heritage site off the coast of Ecuador. The Toyota program will send teachers to the legendary Galapagos Islands to observe and explore environmental projects, talk with experts and community leaders and participate in activities that encourage global awareness about environmental
stewardship. EMHS is proud that one of our own teachers has been selected for this prestigious honor. When asked about being selected for the Toyota International Teacher Program, Kerri says, “I used to work as a field biologist studying birds. I loved my job, but I felt like something was missing. I felt there needed to be a way to transmit what we were learning about these creatures and about our ecosystems to others. That is why education is so important to me. I feel like if we are going to make a difference in this world and help to keep it a place where we and our future generations want to live, that we need to protect our ecosystems. In order for people to want to protect something, first they need to understand it. If I can help people make connections to their local ecosystems, with the animals and the habitats that they live in, I am halfway to my goal. The next step is actually taking action to protect these habitats and animals. That is what I am trying to do at San Pedro Creek. By studying the water and the organisms that use it and how all of the pieces fit together, I hope that I have helped the students gain an appreciation for the ecosystem as a whole.” STATE FARM TO PRESENT CHECK TO EMHS East Mountain High School was chosen to be the recipient of the funds raised from the State Farm Collegiate Player’s Tour Golf Tournament, held at Paa-ko Ridge Golf Club this past July. Proceeds from this event total $7,500. Additionally, the State Farm Good Neighbor Fund will grant EMHS $10,000 in support of our service learning programs. May MartinezHendershot from State Farm and 2
Dennis Hodges of the EMHS Governing Council are going to be at EMHS for a check presentation ceremony on Thursday, October 4th at 2:00pm in the Community Room in Bldg 1. Please attend if you are able – we are so grateful to State Farm for their ongoing support of education at EMHS. GIVE TO EMHS THROUGH THE UNITED WAY Parents or community members who give to the United Way can designate all or a portion of their contributions to go to EMHS by indicating on your pledge form that you want your United Way donation to go to the East Mountain High School Foundation. The East Mountain High School Foundation is a New Mexico non-profit corporation, recognized by the IRS as a 501 (c) (3) charitable organization. Please look for a mailing next week which will provide information on how you can designate EMHS as your United Way recipient, or contact Lori Webster at 281-7400 x. 166. LIGHT THE NIGHT COMING DECEMBER 7 Light the Night, an annual fundraiser and community celebration organized by the EMHS SPSO, is scheduled for Friday, December 7th. Last year, we asked students to go out into the community and solicit donations for luminaria. For every dollar received, EMHS puts out one luminaria at Light the Night. Last year we put out over 6,000 luminaria! We need donations of paper lunch bags, tea light candles and lighters to prepare for this exciting event – and please save the date for Light the Night!

CLASSROOM PICTURE OF THE MONTH
Students in Mrs. Henderson’s Biology class are building EcoColumns, which are closed miniecosystems. Students are using inquiry skills and the scientific method for designing and building the columns, and then collecting data for an extended period of time. GUIDANCE OFFICE CORNER SENIORS – UNM Senior Day is October 6th from 9:00am-2:00pm. This is a great chance for high school seniors and their families to visit the campus, tour the residence halls, find out about majors, scholarships, and financial aid. You can pick up more information and a Registration Form in the Guidance Office. The registration deadline for Senior Day is October 1st. There will be a special College of Engineering Open House during Senior Day from 11-2. El Centro de la Raza, American Indian Student Services and the Combined BA/MD Program will also be holding special sessions throughout the day. See Mr. Smith in the Guidance Office to find out more information about specific UNM departments and organizations. SENIORS – Recently, a number of seniors have inquired about attending college in a western state near New Mexico. Many of the interested seniors do not know about 3
the great opportunities available through WUE Participating Colleges and Universities. The Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) is a program through which students in participating states may enroll in designated two-year and four-year public institutions and programs in other participating states at a special, reduced tuition level. Tuition for WUE students is 150% of the regular in-state tuition! In all programs, the cost to WUE students is substantially less than nonresident tuition. Students do not need to demonstrate financial need to receive the WUE tuition benefit. To be eligible for WUE, students must be a resident of a WICHE State. WUE participating states in 2007-2008 are Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. Each state determines which institutions and programs it will make available to students in the WUE. Eligibility for admission and for WUE tuition is determined by each participating institution. WUE is a “decentralized” program in which the student applies to the institution of his/her choice, indicating that WUE status is desired, and the institution responds directly to the student. The student obtains application materials from and submits the application for admission to the institution in which he/she desires to enroll. There is no general WUE application. The institution may admit or deny admission, as for any applicant. The student must prominently mark on the application for admission that he/she seeks admission as a WUE student. For online applications,
contact the school for specific information. Some colleges and universities also have additional criteria such as ACT/SAT test scores or high school GPA. When initially admitted as a WUE student, the student will pay 150% of the institution’s regular resident tuition (50% more than resident tuition), plus any fees that all students are required to pay. As a hypothetical example, in a college with a resident tuition of $1000 per semester and a nonresident tuition of $3,000 per semester, WUE tuition will be $1500 per semester, considerably less than nonresident tuition. Students may continue to enjoy WUE tuition status as long as they are enrolled in the programs that admitted them and meet any other criteria for continued participation set by their institutions. For further information about the WUE, contact the home state certifying office at: Certifying Officer for New Mexico, WICHE Student Exchange Program, NM Commission on Higher Education, 1068 Cerrillos Rd., Santa Fe, NM 87501; or call (505) 476-6500. General questions about WUE may be sent by email to info-sep@wiche.edu or addressed to Student Exchange Programs, Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education, P.O. Box 9752, Boulder, Colorado 80301-9752; or call (303) 541-0214. You may also visit the WUE website at http://www.wiche.edu/sep for additional information concerning school specific requirements. The following participating states and four-year institutions are listed below. Please visit the WUE website for a more complete list.

JUNIORS and SENIORS – The registration deadline for the December 8th ACT is November 2nd and the cost is $30 without the writing test and $44.50 with the writing test. Families must register directly through ACT, not EMHS. Registration is available on-line at www.actstudent.org or through a paper application available in the Guidance Office if paying by check. The December, April and June ACT tests offer students the opportunity to “buy back” their test. When students order and pay the fee for Test Information Release (TIR) and test on a test date that offers this service, students will receive a list of their answers, a copy of the multiplechoice test questions used to determine their score, the answer key, and scoring instructions. (If students took the Writing Test, they will also receive a copy of the writing prompt, the scoring rubric, and the scores assigned to their essay by two readers.) Students will also receive information about ordering a photocopy of their answer document (including the essay if they took the Writing Test). The TIR fee for 07-08 test dates is $16. This can be done during the 3-month period after the test and doesn’t need to be ordered when registering for the ACT. The registration deadline for the November 3rd SAT is October 2nd and the deadline for the December 1st SAT is October 30th. The cost is $43 for the SAT Reasoning Test and $20 for the Subject Tests. Families must register directly through SAT, not EMHS. Registration is available on-line at www.collegeboard.com or by a paper application available in
the Guidance Office to pay by check. A credit card is needed for all on-line registrations. If you have any questions or need help registering, please see Mrs. Millea or Mr. Smith. The ACT and SAT tests are not offered at EMHS. The School Code for EMHS is 320-588. Families will need this code when registering for either test. SENIORS – The Combined BA/MD Program at UNM offers students a unique opportunity to earn a B.A. and a medical degree (M.D.) in eight years. It is a highly competitive program and is only open to high school seniors. The deadline to apply is November 15th. Visit the Guidance Office for more information on the program. FRESHMEN, SOPHOMORES and JUNIORS – We will be offering students the opportunity to take practice SAT and ACT tests here at EMHS this fall. It is especially important for students to start preparing for these important college entrance exams. The PSAT/NMSQT is the practice SAT and National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and will be given on Saturday, October 20th from 8:30am-11:30am. The cost of the PSAT is $20. The PSAT/NMSQT is intended for Sophomores and Juniors. Students who take the PSAT/NMSQT during their Junior year are eligible for the National Merit Scholarship if their score meets the eligibility requirements. The PSAT/NMSQT tests students in Critical Reading, Math and Writing. Practice books will be available at the end of September. The PLAN is the practice ACT and will be given in November. The 5
tentative date and time is November 3rd from 8:30am-11:30am. The cost of the PLAN will be $15. The PLAN is intended for Sophomores, but Freshmen are also encouraged to take the test. Juniors may consider taking the test in preparation for the actual ACT tests they should take in the spring. The PLAN is a very useful and cost effective way to practice for the ACT without the scores being reported to colleges and universities. The PLAN tests English, Reading, Math and Science. Please see Mr. Smith for more information. Students must register in the Front Office and checks should be made payable to EMHS. Cash is also accepted. APPLY NOW FOR THE 2008 PRUDENTIAL SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY AWARD We have many excellent students here at EMHS who are deeply involved in their communities through volunteering and community service. The 2008 Prudential Spirit of Community Award recognizes students for their service to others. Below is some information about this award and how students can apply. Last year, EMHS student Zach Withers was selected as the New Mexico High School Winner! All students in grades 5-12 who have completed at least 100 hours of community service, at least some of which has taken place since September 1, 2006, are eligible to apply for this award. EMHS is able to select one applicant to be our school nominee. School level nominees are submitted to the state level and receive the President's Volunteer Service Award. One nominee is chosen from each state to win $1,000 and an all-expenses paid trip to Washington DC with a parent/guardian in May 2008. Any students who would like to apply for this award should visit www.prudential.com/spirit and click on the “Apply Now” link. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the online application. The complete online application should be printed, signed by a parent, and submitted to EMHS by October 31st. Winners will be announced in February. For more information, please contact Lori Webster at 505-281-7400 x. 166 or lwebster@eastmountainhigh.net. EMHS strongly encourages all eligible students to apply for this award and is happy to support students in the application process as needed. 6
YEARBOOKS COMING SOON! Good news! I know EVERYONE is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the 2006 – 2007 yearbook. The yearbook company has informed EMHS that yearbooks will be shipped on Friday, October 5th and should arrive at EMHS within a week. Yearbooks will be distributed to current students as soon as they arrive at lunch and graduates will be contacted by phone to pick up a yearbook at the school. Thanks again for your patience with this process – we will do better this year! A NEW CLUB AT EMHS – WELCOME MESA Hello, all! I just wanted to update everyone about MESA. There has been quite a buzz around school among students and I haven’t informed everyone about the program. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the program, it is also known as Math, Engineering, Science Achievement and it’s a statewide program that focuses on getting students informed about careers in these fields. For all intents and purposes, it can be considered a club, although membership in MESA goes above and beyond a regular club because there are scholarship incentive awards. (If students fulfill certain membership requirements through their senior year in high school, they qualify for up to $1000 in scholarship money, as well as a field trip to NASA.) The program is more than 20 years old, and I myself am a MESA alum. (I’ve talked to a few other staff members who are also MESA products.) Ironically, EMHS is the first charter school in NM to start its own chapter. Thus far, I’ve had
about 25 students express interest in joining. For such a small school, this number is pretty awesome! I didn’t expect such a large turnout, but the more the merrier! I’m really pumped to be doing this for our kids—and it’s especially exciting to feel their enthusiasm at our meetings. The following are some things to know about our MESA group: Meetings take place on Fridays during lunch in Room 301. We are in the process of electing officers, and some positions require a letter of recommendation. We are planning our first Parent Meeting for September 29—the same day as the Homecoming Carnival. We have our first competition on Thursday, October 25 at UNM. At the Fall Design Competition, our teams will be competing in 5 different competitions: Robotics, On-Site Science, On-Site Math, On-Site Engineering, and On-Site “Surprise.” This is a statewide competition and our goal is to place in any/all competitions. Lots of preparation will be required! If you have any questions about MESA, please contact Stephanie Henderson at shenderson@eastmountainhigh.net or 281-7400 x. 301. STUDENT GOVERNMENT REPORTS! The EMHS Student GovernmentSponsored Homecoming Carnival took place September 29th from 26pm. The next East Mountain High School Blood Drive will commence in late October. Other school-wide activities are being discussed for late October and early November. The Senior Off-Campus lunch tradition has been successfully continued, occurring every Thursday so long as
each senior fulfills the requirements. New Student Government Members have joined after elections on Tuesday, Sept. 18th. Katie Wilson is the new Freshmen Class President. Ryan Knight is the VicePresident of the Freshmen Class. Charlotte Davis-Sparks is the Freshmen Class Representative. Eric Wilson is the new Student Government Secretary and Katie Rinehimer has become the new Senior Class Representative. – submitted by Katie Rinehimer SPSO NEWS The last meeting of the SPSO was Thursday, September 6th. The meeting started with a discussion of ways to improve the litter problem that often occurs at lunch time. Dave Roberts reported that the principal search is well underway. The Governing Council will ultimately make the decision, but parental input is very important in helping to hire the next principal for EMHS. Security issues were discussed, including what can be improved at EMHS in the future. The Welcome Back Bash was a success and raised $580.00. Several suggestions were made to improve next year's event and to encourage attendance. The Veteran's Day program will not happen this year, but it is hoped that it can become a bi-annual event. Several events will be advertised by EMHS to help raise money for the Tayah Cox Memorial funds. On September 17th, the Ramon Vigil, the school’s lawyer, discussed students’ religious rights and the school’s responsibility to be religiously neutral. Parents were invited to attend.
There are several important upcoming events. Light the Night will be December 7. Discovery Projects and trips are already in the early planning stages. Cheryl Atkins gave a brief report on the EMHS Foundation Gala held at Paa-ko Golf Club in August. Cheryl also suggested that a committee be formed to help organize the EMHS Idol Talent Show sponsored by SPSO. Sincerely, Lorette Lambert, Secretary SUPPORT FOR THE FAMILY OF TAYAH COX Many thanks to the EMHS community for their support of Larry, Trina and Teila Cox during the last month. The Whispering Pines 4-H Club, of which several EMHS students are members, raised over $1000 at a car wash in Edgewood. Mark and Carol Lowry, owners of the East Mountain Grill, sponsored a spaghetti dinner fundraiser that raised over $3,000. Numerous other people have given in ways small and large beyond count. The Cox family has expressed their gratitude for the tremendous outpouring of community support. BUY AAA ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE & BENEFIT EMHS! TRAVEL OPPORTUNITY Join Sandra Fry, EMHS World Arts teacher, for the third annual tour to discover the arts and culture of Italy. This year students can receive elective credit for their studies. The tour leaves in June 2008 for 12 days. Parents and community are invited to participate with air, hotel and meals included for approximately $2,500.00 for students. Please see Ms. Fry for a brochure and more information. GRADUATION COMMITTEE The 2007 Graduation Committee plans a meeting on Tuesday, October 23rd at 3:45pm here at EMHS. All senior parents are invited to attend. VOLUNTEERING AT EMHS Families that choose to enroll their child or children at East Mountain High School are asked to volunteer in support of the school 8 hours per month, or a total of 72 hours per year. During the 2006 – 2007 school year, EMHS families logged over 17,000 hours of volunteering or the equivalent in financial donations – let’s top that in 2007 – 2008!
Parents can earn volunteer hours by bringing students other than your own to school (carpooling), attending athletic events, attending school meetings like Open House and monthly SPSO meetings and by chaperoning field trips or Discovery Projects. In fact, the opportunities to get involved at EMHS are endless, but we need YOU to reach out and get involved! Please log your volunteer hours and donations on your Family Report Card that is available in a three-ring binder in the Front Office. If you would prefer to donate rather than volunteer, you can make a donation to the school in lieu of volunteer hours. A donation of $52.00 will cover one month. There are always many volunteer opportunities at East Mountain High School, from answering phones in the Front Office to preparing mailings in the Guidance Office to tutoring students during the school day. If you have questions about volunteering, please contact Lori Webster at 281-7400 x. 166. PLEASE HELP WITH RECYCLING EMHS has a recycling program but struggles to handle the work of sorting and packing recyclables and taking them to the transfer station. If there is a parent who would be willing to pick up recyclables from classrooms and take them to be recyclables once a week, please contact Lori Webster at 281-7400 x. 166 or lwebster@eastmountainhigh.net. GIVING TO EMHS Our school is rich in experiences that make us unique and unlike most large public high schools. Our small 8
class sizes, small school environment and inquiry learning philosophy are designed to help our students reach their full potential. You have chosen as a family to become part of the East Mountain High School community – please consider choosing to support EMHS financially. Giving to EMHS creates the difference that makes our unique educational environment possible. It allows us to fund things like three classroom sets of laptops always available to students and teachers for checkout. Private donations and grants made to EMHS are up to 10% of each year’s annual budget. Technology Donations Many thanks to the parents and families who made a technology donation to EMHS at registration! We ask families to give $100 per student towards technology so that we can continue to make sure computers are upgraded, missing or broken parts are repaired and printers are stocked with ink. EMHS seeks to integrate technology seamlessly into the learning environment – to do that our equipment needs to work when we need it! We will be accepting technology donations throughout the year, so please feel free to make your donation in the front office whenever it is convenient.
