HIGHLIGHTS • 2007
• A total of 50,410 people held a Northland Library card at the end of 2007. 49% of the residents of our five support-
ing municipalities (Bradford Woods, Franklin Park, Marshall, McCandless and Ross) are registered library card
holders.

• Our total circulation set a new record, passing the one million mark for the second year in a row. A total of
1,067,473 items were circulated in 2007. Each cardholder took out an average of 21 items.

• Our current collection numbers 198,278 items, including books, CDs, DVDs, CD-Roms, audio books, newspapers
and magazines.

• A total of 423,048 people came to the library during the year, an average of 1,241 people for each day that the
library was open. Northland Library was open a total of 3,585 hours during the year.

• Our adult and children’s reference desks handled a total of 82,924 inquiries in 2007, including those made in
person, on the phone and on the Internet.

• The adult and children’s computer centers recorded their highest yearly volume ever. Public computers were used
a total of 138,389 times during the year.

• A new Best Seller collection was introduced. It includes
multiple copies of the latest best-selling books, which are
available on a first-come, first served basis.

• More than 4,000 items were circulated through our
Bookmobile service in 2007. The Bookmobile makes
stops at the Marshall Elementary School on Fridays and
at North Hills Village Shopping Center on Saturdays.

• An appearance by award-winning actor James Earl
Jones highlighted our library programming. In all, the
library hosted more than 1,000 programs and events
during the year, more than 500 of which were sponsored by the library.

• A new feature allowing people to register online for certain library programs was introduced.

• Our Summer Reading Clubs for adults, teens and children attracted more than 2,000 participants. The library
also sponsored the seventh annual Three Rivers Storytelling Festival, which featured both national and local story-
tellers.

• We introduced our Boomer Connections @ Northland Library programming series, which provides information
designed to help people in the baby boomer generation.

• The library, in conjunction with the Internal Revenue Service and VITA, continued to provide free tax form prepara-
tion assistance to senior citizens and low-income families. More than 650 individuals or families took advantage of
this service.

• The library store, the Book Nook, continued to be a popular stop for people in the library to shop for pre-owned
books, get some snacks, and find supplies such as blank CDs or stationery.

• Volunteers continue to play a vital role in the library’s operation, including taking items to residents or area
nursing homes and personal care facilities, staffing the Book Nook, and helping our circulation department to keep
