Greek Week 2007 September 29th-October 4th “I Love the 90s” Greek Week Rules Judging o Judges for all events will be faculty or graduate students of the University of Maine who are not currently affiliated with a fraternity or sorority at the University of Maine. o Undergraduates affiliated with any Greek chapter(s) at the University of Maine will not be permitted to judge any events. o All judges will be selected by the Director of Greek Life. Participation o Only members listed on each chapter’s vital statistics will be allowed to compete and participate in Greek Week events. o All new members or pledges who have signed their name in the New Member Book in the Greek Life Office by 4pm Friday, September 28th will be allowed to compete and participate in Greek Week events. General Conduct o Inappropriate conduct is defined, but not limited to: o Defacing another chapter’s property during Greek Week o Any illegal actions carried out during Greek Week o Unsportsmanlike conduct during events o Any action that is in conflict with the University of Maine Student Conduct Code o If at any time the Director of Greek Life feels that a chapter or an individual member is acting in an inappropriate manner, points will be deducted as follows: o A total of 40 points will be deducted for inappropriate actions made by a chapter. o A maximum of 40 points will be deducted for inappropriate actions made by an individual member of a chapter. The Director of Greek Life holds the right to change or alter any event, rule, awarded points, or point structure given that all chapters receive notice 24 hours prior to the event. All Week Long Philanthropy Event: Food Drive Chapters will be responsible for collecting nonperishable items throughout the week in your chapter room or house. Items are due to the Greek Life Office by 12pm Thursday, October 4th. Chapters will be awarded a point a pound, so this is an excellent way to gather quick and easy points. Greek Week: Saturday Today’s Schedule of Events: 3pm Greek Olympics Greek Olympics Time: 3pm Location: On the Mall Events: TBA Greek Olympics Rules: Each event will be judged separately, there will not be an overall winner of the Greek Olympics. For the Chariot Race, each chapter will be responsible for building their own chariot previous to the Greek Olympics. Each chariot will hold one rider and be pulled by 2 chapter members. For each event, points will be awarded as follows: 1st place: 20 points 2nd place: 15 points 3rd place: 10 points 10 points will be awarded to each chapter that participates in the Greek Olympics and does not place. Fraternities and sororities will be judged separately. Greek Week: Sunday Day Off! Greek Week: Monday Today’s Schedule of Events: 8pm Academic Bowl Academic Bowl Time: 8pm Location: TBA Fraternities and sororities will compete in a college bowl trivia game. All questions will be chosen before the actual competition by the VP Programming of the Panhellenic Council and the VP of the Interfraternity Council. Each chapter may enter one team of up to five people to compete. Each round will be 5 minutes long. The team to answer the most questions correctly in the 5 minutes will move on to the final round. Academic Bowl Rules: Points will be awarded based on Jeopardy Style point systems, with points ranging from 100 to 500 points per question, giving each fraternity/sorority the amount of point that they acquire in the game. Fraternities and sororities will compete together in this event. All chapters that participate will get points based on the points earned from correctly answered questions. If a chapter does not answer any questions correctly, they will get 100 points for participating. Questions will be regarding the fraternity and sororities on campus, the National Panhellenic Conference, and the Interfraternity Council. There will also be a pop culture category. Greek Week Tuesday: Today’s Schedule of Events: Letters/Spirit Day Letters/Spirit Day Time: 8am-4pm Location: Sign in at the Greek Life Office Members will wear their chapter letters today to promote Greek Life and to kick off Greek Week. Although this is the official “Letters Day” chapters are encouraged to wear letters all week long to promote and invoke interest in Greek Life. Letters Day Rules: Members of each chapter must report to the Greek Life Office, display their letters, and sign their name on their chapter’s active member roster to be counted in participation percentages. Any member wearing letters who does not sign his or her name to the roster in the Greek Life Office during designated times will not be counted towards their chapter’s participation percentage. Chapters will receive one point for each percentage of their membership who correctly signs in at the Greek Life Office. For example: 50% of membership=50 points. If any person signs a name other than their name, then the forged names will be omitted from the final count. New members/pledges will only be counted if they have signed into the Greek Life Office. *For those chapters that may not allow their new members/pledges to wear letters, if they are wearing an article of clothing with your organization’s name on it, or if they are wearing something that is in your organization’s colors, they will be permitted to sign in. This clause is only for new members/pledges. Greek Week: Wednesday Today’s Schedule of Events: 7pm Greek Talent Show Greek Talent Show Time: 7pm Location: Hauck Auditorium Chapters may choose the way they would like to display their talents (it does not have to be a song or a skit). We strongly encourage you to use the Greek Week theme: I love the 90s. Bonus points will be awarded to chapters who incorporate this theme. Greek Talent Show Rules: Each chapter must turn in a description of their talent for the Greek Talent Show by Friday, September 28th at 12pm to the Director of Greek Life for approval. Each chapter that performs must have at least 5 members of 20% of their chapter (whichever number is greater) in their performance. Groups will have a six minute maximum for their talent piece, 2 minutes to set up, and 2 minutes to take down. Fraternities and sororities will be judged separately in this event. A total of 10 points will be awarded to each chapter that participates in the event and does not place. Points awarded for this event will be as follows: 1st place: 100 points 2nd place: 75 points 3rd place: 50 points Fraternities and sororities will each be ranked. Greek Week: Thursday Today’s Schedule of Events: 4pm Greek Parade Greek Parade Time: 4pm Location: Alfond Parking Lot Announcement of the winners to follow the parade. Each chapter will create their own float for the parade. The theme will be: “I Love the 90s.” This theme can be incorporated any way that you deem creative and tasteful. Greek Parade Rules: Each chapter must turn in a description of their float theme for the parade by Friday, September 28th at 12pm to the Director of Greek Life for approval. Each chapter will be allowed to use only one road vehicle and a trailer (Flat bed trailer no longer than 20’) as their float. Pace setters will be setup in intervals throughout the parade so that the parade does not move any faster than walking pace. Pace setters will be selected by the Director of Greek Life. Judging will be in 3 categories: 1. Most creative 2. Best representation of the theme 3. Highest percent of chapter in attendance Based on the above 3 categories, chapters will be ranked and will receive points as follows: 50 points for 1st, 30 points for 2nd, and 20 points for 3rd with nonplacing chapters receiving 10 points each. Fraternities and Sororities will be judged separately, so there will be no partnering up. The parade will begin at the Alfond Arena parking lot, continue to the Union on Munson Road, and then to Rangeley road, past DTAV, and finally down Long Road, ending at the Alfond Arena Parking lot.
