International Health Undergraduate Summer Research Scholarships

The MAA/CIH Summer Scholarship is an opportunity that is funded primarily by the Medical Alumni Association
and is also partially supported by CREMS. The Program aims to encourage interest in international health among
medical students. Students will have the opportunity to engage in an academic/clinical learning experience that
includes a structured research project on health issues in a developing country. The project, if possible, should be part
of or related to the ongoing international work of the U of T faculty member. Notwithstanding this, totally new and
unrelated projects will also be eligible. Upon completion of the summer elective project, the student should have
obtained a knowledge base that would be unobtainable in the standard curriculum in Canada.

     ELIGIBILITY
Open to all 1st and 2nd year medical students at the University of Toronto who have been involved in the
UTIHP student group in the 2007-2008 academic year.

     DURATION
10 weeks in duration for 1st year medical students, 8 weeks in duration for 2nd year medical students; Including
travel to and from the project site, during the summer months.

COMPETITION FOR THE AWARDS IS BASED ON THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:
      1. Sufficient supervision in Toronto and at the project site.
      2. A project proposal that is well thought out, relevant, realistic and has a defined structure so that objectives will
     be met.
      3. Demonstration to the selection committee that the project is unique to situations in developing countries and
     cannot be duplicated in Canada.
      4. Demonstration that the student has a primary role in the research activities.

     NOTE:

     • Students are encouraged, but not limited, to return to past project sites. This is for the sake of continuity and
to provide some assurance of a quality experience.
     • The 13 scholarships for 2008 will be divided amongst these project sites: Cambodia (5 -- 3 primary care, 2
          surgical), China (2), Namibia (1), Kenya (1), Ethiopia (1), Zambia (1), Independent projects (2).
     • Each scholarship recipient will receive return airfare plus a monthly stipend of approx. $500 /month.
     • Two students may develop a project proposal together, but the objectives should indicate the need for a
          combined effort and collaboration.
     • Students should have a primary role in the research project.
     • Contacting overseas supervisors and developing a project proposal can take a long time. Students are
encouraged to start the process early. Please try to establish contact with Toronto and Project Site
          supervisors by early November.
