Competitor Siphon
Objective: Take advantage of all the work your competitors have already done
to find places to get backlinks.
Main benefit (Traffic or SEO): Both
Estimated Cost: Free and paid (if competitors are using paid ads)
Estimated Time Required: Can be very time consuming – good to outsource,
and some time-saving software is available.
Process #1 (Free):
Do a search on Google for your main keywords. Make a list of your competitors,
copying their domain names into a spreadsheet.
Process #2 (Using Paid Software Market Samurai):
Enter your keyword and run an SEO Competition Report.
Market Samurai will find your top 10 competitors for that keyword and give you
tons of information on how many backlinks they have as well as what else they
are doing for SEO.

For Both Methods
1. Find out how many backlinks each competitor has by going to Yahoo Site
Explorer and searching with a competitor’s website address. Set the
search to show the “Inlinks” and “Except from this domain” so you don’t
count their internal links.
2. Explore these backlinks and see which you can get, too. In many cases,
the links result from a blog comment or a directory listing – very easy to
include your links, too.
Remember, success leaves clues. One of the best things to do is model what
others are doing successfully rather than trying to reinvent the wheel. Success is
duplicatable. Basically, the goal is to see what your competitors are doing
successfully and duplicate those results for yourself. Then of course go out and
get more backlinks to blow them out of the water. As always, document your
process for doing this, and then outsource the work to someone else so you can
spend your time marketing your business.
