Miramar Relay for Life Health Services Director Lezlie Allen is coordinating a Miramar College team to participate in the 24-hour American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life on May 19. Students and staff who’d like to walk in support of the American Cancer Society’s efforts on research and survivorship should contact Lezlie Allen in the Health Services Office at (619) 388-7881. LLRC Postponed for Potential State Funding Campus presentations and open forums were held last month regarding a proposal to delay the construction of the Prop S-funded library/learning resource center due to potential state funding should a statewide bond measure pass in 2008 that would underwrite the cost of building community college libraries. Following extensive campus dialogue, Miramar President Hsieh submitted a recommendation to SDCCD Chancellor Constance Carroll in support of the construction delay. The Chancellor responded, “Thank you. This is an important opportunity for our District and for Miramar Collge. We will do our best to ensure that the savings benefit Miramar.” Leave a Legacy Plaza Update Plans are underway for a September grand opening ceremony for the Leave a Legacy Plaza. Construction is right on schedule.

Tech Prep Summit Showcases Miramar Programs On Monday, March 26, Miramar and SDCCD’s Tech Prep Program co-hosted a regional summit on career pathway and student transition strategies. The summit focused on Miramar College’s involvement in a national project entitled “College and Career Transitions Initiative” (CCTI). Miramar’s Jordan Omens (administration of justice), Sandra Slivka (biotechnology), Greg Newhouse (advanced transporation technologies), and George Beity (public safety) presented college projects impressively to the representatives from federal, state, and local agencies. SciTech Biodiesel & Alternative Energy Project Under the leadership of Associate Dean Greg Newhouse, Miramar’s Advanced Transportation Technology and Energy program has partnered with San Diego Unified School District to provide opportunities for high school students to explore new and evolving forms of technology and science through SciTech, School of Science and Technology. Check out this recent media coverage of the innovative biodiesel project: http://www.kpbs.org/news/ local?id=8008 Student Club Shines Miramar College Student Chapter of Amnesty International represented Miramar College at the Human Rights Conference at Cal State Fullerton Saturday, March 31 in an 80 minute program, “Stop Violence Against Women,” incorporating facts and statistics, music, film clips, poetry, and personal stories to portray the scope of the problem both nationally and internationally. Accompanied by faculty advisor Dr. Corrie Ort, Miramar presenters were Courtney Pulido, Brittany Baxter, Chris Getz, and Avery Hulog, with research and other assistance from Jamarr Coleman, Monica Mendoza, Keymi Alba Mendoza, Christine Prugalidad, and Jennifer Nguyen. The Miramar students were the only student presenters at the conference for high school and college students, lawyers, teachers and professors, social workers, parole officers, and union representatives. SD County Law Enforcement Foundation Event The Public Safety Training Institute hosted the SD County Law Enforcement Foundation on April 12 with a guided tour of the training facility, including FATS (Force Options Simulator), Driving, K-9, and Less Lethal Weaponry demonstrations as well as a SED/SWAT exhibit. 2

Women’s Soccer Comes to Miramar College Sports history will be made this fall when San Diego Miramar College debuts its first-ever women’s soccer team. On March 23rd, the San Diego Community College District Board of Trustees approved the formation of the newest Miramar College competitive JETS team.
Soccer Pro Sean Bowers
The lady Jets will compete in the Pacific Coast Conference and be coached by soccer super star Sean Bowers, a local boy who attended Mira Mesa High School, Miramar College, and Quincy College in Illinois prior to playing and coaching professionally. An all-star defender, Bowers played for the MLS Kansas City Wizards from 1996-1999 and earned the team’s Defender of the Year award twice. He was a 2002 MISL All-Star and the league’s Defender of the Year with the Baltimore Blast, before serving as the team’s interim head coach in 2002-2003. Bowers was acquired by the San Diego Sockers in 2002 in a trade with the Baltimore Blast, where he led the team to an MISL Championship title. With the Sockers, Bowers led the League in 2003 with 93 blocks was second in assists (19), and broke the 1,000 blocks mark for his career (1,001), making him fifth on the all-time blocks list at the time. In 2004, Bowers was named to the U.S. Futsal National Team as captain — the only player on the 14-man roster with previous experience in a FIFA Futsal World Championship. Bowers’ coaching experience includes stints with the Detroit Rockers of the NPSL, the Michigan Hawks, an
under-23 women’s select team that won the 2001 U.S. Open Cup, and with the Women’s Premiere Soccer League (WPSL) San Diego Sea Lions. Bowers joined the Miramar College faculty in 2006. Coach Bowers will be assisted by Jennifer Nielsen, head varsity girls’ soccer coach for Poway High School and prior collegiate, national and professional women’s soccer stand-out. Nielsen played with the WUSA San Diego Spirit and with U.S. Women’s National teams from 1992-1996 and 2000. Nielsen has extensive international experience, having competed or played professionally in China, France, Canada, Japan, Denmark and Sweden.

With the new “single stream” recycling procedure, most common recyclable items can now be placed into a single recyclable bin. Miramar College Fire Technology Program Praised Miramar College was honored at the El Cajon and San Miguel Reserve Firefighter Academy commencement ceremony on March 30 with a plaque recognizing the college’s partnership in training. Public Safety Dean George Beitey will display the award in his office. Stall and Howard Schuler used their combined decades of automotive career experience to advocate for the college’s automotive program recently at the Miramar College EXPO Job Fair, Transfer Fair and Student Festival.
