Welcome to the 2007 Summer Swim Season! Welcome to the YMCA Swim Team! We are looking forward to another great season. If this packet leaves unanswered questions, please contact Mark Lee & Julia Hsu at 856-5743. The YMCA Swim Team represents both the Heights and Mountainside YMCA’s and is a member of the Sundance Aquatic Association. (www.sundanceswimming.net) The Sundance Aquatic Association is the coordinating body for 16 swim teams in the greater Albuquerque Area. The Sundance Aquatic Association by-laws set the rules and regulations governing the member teams and is an all-volunteer organization. YMCA youth sports programs are designed to encourage family involvement and provide low level competition with an emphasis on fun, safety, teamwork, fair play and skill development. Children of all abilities are welcome and given equal opportunity to participate. Our YMCA team depends on the cooperation and participation of ALL our parents. We ask each family to carefully consider where they may best help our team. It could be volunteering at a special event or helping to officiate a meet. COACHES We are very pleased to welcome back the following coaches from last year: Head coach, Robert Wall, Nate Rodgers, Amanda Howell and Aaron Fetherolf. We would also like to welcome, Jeffrey Lucero, Jonathan Pohl, and Megan Daugherty to our coaching staff this year. PRACTICES Beginning May 14th swim team practices will be Monday – Friday from 5:45 – 6:45 PM. Summer practices begin Tuesday, May 29th and will be 7:00 – 8:15 AM and 5:45 – 6:45 PM. Afternoon practices will not be held on days we have swim meets. Swimmers need to bring running shoes to every morning practice unless otherwise told by a coach. Please complete the attached forms and return them to Mark Lee, Julia Hsu or leave them at the front desk of the Mountainside YMCA. INFORMATION/TRAINING Parking for the Swimteam Families are being asked by the YMCA to park on the westside of the Y’s parking lot. New Parent Orientation will be held on Wednesday, May 30th at 5:45 PM. Kirsten Bennett will be available to answer questions from new parents regarding the swim team, meets, and practice schedules. The Parents Stroke & Turn Official Rules Clinic will be conducted by Mark Lee. The clinic will be on Thursday, May 31st at 5:45 PM at the YMCA. All parents are encouraged to attend this clinic. It is a great opportunity to improve your stroke knowledge. If you have any questions, please contact Mark Lee. The Timers’ Clinic will be conducted by Ellen Dobson on Friday, June 1st at 5:45 PM. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn how to use our stop watches and help out at swim meets. Also, the YMCA swim team is looking for a parent volunteer to fill the position of leading the meet volunteers. Parent Communication will primarily be through a weekly newsletter via your e mail or on the swim team website ymcaswimteam.net beginning on Monday, May 21 st. Please be on the lookout for our weekly e-mails as they contain specific information for upcoming events each week as well as directions to all away meets. We have a library of instructional videos & DVD’s available for swimmers and parents to watch. They may be checked out for a 2-3 day period. Please contact Alan Giesler if you are interested in our library of swimming instruction. SPECIAL EVENTS The annual Bella Vista Hike is on Monday, May 28th. We will meet at the YMCA at 7:30 AM and drive to the Whitewash trailhead. Volunteers will meet us for dinner at a restaurant in Cedar Crest and drive us back to town. The hike is approximately 13 miles and open to all swimmers 12 years or older, with permission from a coach. Swimmers under 12 may request special permission from a coach if they wish to participate. Contact Coach Robert for more details (2937926). T-shirt Design. All swimmers are invited to design a t-shirt for the YMCA swim team. It can be hand drawn or computer generated. It must be a two color limit, and on an 8 ½ by 11 sheet of paper. Designs for the t-shirt will be judged by the coaching staff. Designs must be submitted to Justine Johannes by Saturday, June 9th. Mentorship Program is a program designed for older swimmers to mentor new and younger swimmers. This gives the older swimmers an opportunity to learn about leadership while it provides younger swimmers a positive role model. This program also allows new parents to receive, if needed, additional help for their younger swimmers. This is a volunteer program. To become a mentor, a swimmer must be at least 11 years old with at least two years of swimming experience. To sign up your swimmer, see the medical release form enclosed in this packet. For the silent auction we are looking for donations from families and each swimmer will be asked to bring in one item for a team basket. This has been a very successful fundraiser in past years and we encourage all families to participate. ALL proceeds will be going to the swim team. Don’t forget to bring your jeans and t-shirt for the belly-flops! Information on this event will follow. Swim-team-athon & Potluck is a new and fun fundraising addition for the YMCA swim team.
