Personal Fitness Trainer Diploma Distance Learning Frequently Asked Questions How is the program offered? All courses are offered online through an online learning platform called Moodle. Will I have to be online at a certain time to attend class? No, course work can be completed on your own time; there is no required class time. There will be deadlines for assignments and exams that must be followed. What course(s) should I start with? There are three courses with no prerequisites: PFT120, PFT121 & PFT124. These are good courses to start with and are prerequisites for the courses that follow. Any of the first semester courses can be taken at the same time assuming you are registered in the prerequisite course. For example, if you are registered in PFT120, you may also take PFT122 in the same semester even though PFT120 is listed as the prerequisite. When can I start? Courses begin every January, May and September. Please see website at www.nait.ca/pft for exact start dates. How do I register for this program? You can register at online at www.nait.ca/pft and click on Distance Learning courses, scroll to the bottom and click the course(s) you’d like to register for, and Add to Cart. Please note that there is no application process for this program, you simply register in the courses you’d like to take. When is the registration deadline? There is no deadline for registration. You can register until the start date assuming there is still room in the class. It is however, best to register early to ensure there are still spots available and to ensure you receive your textbook in time for the start of class. It is your responsibility to ensure that the textbook is received in time. What are the prerequisites? There are no entrance requirements to begin the PFT DL program. Grade 12 English or ESL proficiency is recommended. For all courses, a moderate degree of proficiency with personal computers is highly recommended. All course work must be completed within the dates indicated; there is no option to extend. Failure to complete the course will result in a failing mark posted on your transcript. How many courses can I take at one time? You can do as many courses as you feel you can handle and have time to complete, provided you have the course prerequisites. We suggest taking two courses at once depending on your time availability. On average how long does this program take to complete? The time it takes to complete the PFT DL program depends on each student’s time availability. We estimate an average of 3 years – some students complete sooner and some longer. Is there a practical portion? Yes, PFT425 is what we call Professional Experience. You work with the tutor to find a location in your area to complete your 135 training hours. Am I responsible for finding my own professional experience site? You work with your tutor to find a suitable facility for your field placement. You will be expected to research facilities in your own area using the criteria provided in your manual. Once you’ve found a site, you will introduce the supervisor to your tutor for approval. Skills you’ve learned earlier in the program will be utilized, such as networking. How do I correspond with my tutor? Your tutors name will be indicated in the Welcome Email you receive prior to the start of your course. You may email or chat with your tutor within the course. Are any of these courses in‐class? No, everything is done at home, except for the Where can I get the required textbooks? Textbooks may be purchased at NAIT’s bookstore, Campus Reads & Needs. A booklist is available on our website and is updated regularly, so always check this list each semester. Can I complete this program even though I live outside of Alberta? Yes, this program can be completed from anywhere where you have access to the internet. Is the PFT Distance Learning Program recognized throughout Canada? The CSEP CPT (Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology Certified Personal Trainer) certification is a Canadian certification and recognized in Canada only. Your NAIT PFT Diploma meets their education requirements. Is the PFT Distance Learning Program recognized outside of Canada? The NAIT PFT Diploma is recognized by NSCA as curriculum required to test for their CPT (Certified Personal Trainer) certification. This is an international certification based in the United States. As a Personal Fitness Trainer, graduates will typically be employed or their services contracted, by private fitness centres/studios, employee fitness centres, public recreation facilities, YMCA’s and senior’s recreation centres. There are also a variety of self‐employment opportunities as many people are now choosing ton contract the services of a personal fitness trainer independently.
