Review Topic 5:
Decimal Subtraction
To insure tenths are subtracted from
tenths, hundredths from hundredths
and so on,

Line up the decimal before
subtracting.

Fill in Zeros
Example: 5  0.343

Step one 5 Step two 5.000
 
0.343 0.343
4.657

Notice the decimal after the 5 and the
decimal stays in line for the answer.
Fraction Subtraction

Find a common denominator -- a
number that both denominators divide
into evenly.

Raise all fractions to be subtracted to
that denominator
Example:
12 is the least
common denominator.
2 4 8
Raise each fraction to 5  5
12ths 3  4  12
When this is 13 3
subtracted the result is
3 5/12. 2  2
43 12
Sometimes you might
have to reduce.

Borrowing

Notice borrowing is
1 4  4 4 16
required to complete 8    8  7 1  7
this subtraction. 3  4  12 12 12
Change the 8 4/12 to 3 3  3   3 9 3
9
 
7 + 1 4/12. 4  3  12 12
Then change the 1 7
4/12 to an improper 4
12
fraction, 16/12.
Now subtract to get 4
7/12.
