Complex Sentences One independent (main) clause and one or more dependent (subordinate) clause. Example: Some areas become deforested because people need wood for fuel. Because people need wood for fuel, they cut down trees that have grown for many years. There are TWO dependent clauses in this sentence, can you spot them? Compound-Complex Sentences Has more than one independent (main) clause and at least one dependent (subordinate) clause Example Campers need fuel for cooking, but they should use stoves that require no wood. Practice Using a whiteboard and a marker, identify the dependent clause in each sentence. If a sentence has no dependent clause, write NONE. Practice Since the world’s supply of wood is limited, environmentalists encourage conservation of timber resources. The United States government controls large areas of national forest and sets the policy for use of the timber. Many states have set aside land for state forests, which may also be used for recreation. Practice People’s ideas about forest conservation differ, and opposing groups present arguments that deserve serious consideration. Because opinions on the subject are so different, no simple solution exists. Practice Working in pairs, write the dependent clause that appears in each of the following sentences . Then write complex or compound-complex to identify each sentence. Practice Energy conservation has become extremely important because millions of energy consuming devices are in use every day. Practice When builders construct new homes, they should install solar panels and other passive solar devices and as many energy-saving appliances as possible. Practice Although energy-efficient appliances cost more, their use results in long-term savings for the owner, and the environment benefits, too. Practice Because legislators have enacted certain laws, all new cars must be energy efficient. Practice When cars use less gas, the air is cleaner, and people may have less trouble breathing. Practice Though sulfur pollution is a threat to human health, it also damages lakes, wildlife, and buildings. Practice Although water power can generate electricity, hydroelectric dams may cause floods on farmland, in forests, and in wildlife areas. Practice We must always find ways of producing more goods, but at the same time we must reduce the amount of energy that we consume in producing those goods. Practice Conservation and solar power are the keys to a safe future, so we must cautiously use the devises that cool, heat, and transport us. Homework Complete exercise 9 on pg. 544. Due tomorrow!!!
