The complete 2007 call for papers will be posted on NCA’s web site in December: www.natcom.org Please consult the most recent posting before submitting papers and panels: Convention Theme: Communicating World Views: Faith-Intellect-Ethics Salman Rushdie refers to the intersection of faith and reason as “the hot button issue of our day.” In the aftermath of September 11, 2001, we confront deep divisions around the world and in America about what should matter most in life. Today we live in a world in which we are inescapably connected to each other, yet separated by divergent points of view that make it increasingly difficult to reach each other. How can we achieve understanding across the gulf of worldviews that separate and threaten us? Where should we draw the line between freedom of expression and inciting violence through speech? How can we distinguish what is fanatical from what is moderate or reasonable in ways that cut across divergent systems of belief? Is it possible to reach a common ground for communication in the face of the differences that divide us? With these and similar questions in mind, we have chosen the convention theme, Communicating Worldviews: Faith—Intellect—Ethics, for the 2007 NCA Convention in Chicago. The theme invites vigorous inquiry, dialogue, and debate on a wide range of questions and issues that can bring to light the ways in which communication creates the webs of belief and meaning to which human beings become attached. How does communication contribute to the formation, representation, objectification, and institutionalization of webs of belief and how can communication be used more effectively to achieve a shared concern for and commitment to improving the human condition? Grounded in the idea that the terms by which the world is viewed and understood are communicative productions, the convention theme challenges members of our discipline to address contested interpretations of rationality, proof, truth, knowledge, reality, objectivity, tolerance, persecution, and the self; to highlight the sense-making practices of communication by which people circulate, negotiate and enact meanings and values (including mediated productions); and to examine the significance and influence of diverse and divergent constructions of faith, spirituality, the body, evidence, and intellect on the ethical, methodological, epistemological, and pedagogical commitments of our discipline. Building on innovations introduced in San Antonio, the convention planners seek to make the NCA 2007 meetings a site of connection and action by promoting discussion of a broad array of faith-oriented, intellectual, and ethical issues and discourses that cut across the diverse interests of NCA’s units. We anticipate a convention that will explore the boundaries that traditionally separate faith, intellect, and ethics as well as the pressure points at which they converge. The inclusion of the term “faith” is intended to be inclusive of, but not limited to, the domain of religion. We encourage metaphorical, creative, and heuristic extensions and conceptions of what faith can mean. Rather than confining “faith” to a single meaning, we invite multiple conceptions and interpretations of faith that include ideas of trust or fidelity to a promise or conviction, to Page 440 2006 Annual Convention NCA confidence and reliance, to sincerity and honesty, and to loyalty to one’s beliefs. For example, one can have faith in the importance of the teaching, scholarship, methodologies, and creative activity of one’s discipline—to believe in its significance (or not)—or one can lose faith in one’s work or purpose as in cases of burnout. More than thirty-five years ago, Thomas Kuhn observed that the choice between old and new paradigms in science cannot be made on rational grounds but rather “…a decision of that kind can only be made on faith.” Today, the boundaries separating science, religion, and public policy are becoming blurred. Increasingly, we hear talk of faith-based science, facts confirmed exclusively by faith, and state legislatures debating limits to academic freedom based on a framework of faith. In public speaking and persuasion classrooms, instructors face new pedagogical and ethical challenges when they must grade faith-based speeches and arguments that appeal to the authority of faith communities. Moreover, insofar as postmodernism illuminated the constitutive qualities of communication, it also weakened our trust in venerable ideas about the foundations of knowledge, shaking our confidence in orthodox methodologies and modes of representation. Clearly questions of faith-intellect-ethics punctuate our lives inside and outside the research laboratory, the library, and the classroom. These questions make it imperative that we interrogate the complicated intersections of faith, intellect, and ethics. The convention theme is intended to inspire creative, timely, and innovative programs and panels subsumed under a broad conception of faith-intellect-ethics. We expect to feature sessions that showcase scholarship on the debates and public discourse on intelligent design and euthanasia; communication at the end of life; developments in biotechnology that explicitly raise questions at the intersections of ethics, faith, and reason by reconstituting definitions of human nature, human being, gender, and sexual identity; faith and the oppression of women and minorities; the rhetorical reframing of “morality” and “ethics” in political discourse and political campaigning; media representations of evangelicalism and fundamentalism; trust, faith, and censorship; frameworks for criticizing and defending faith; how communication theory and research can contribute to our understanding of social justice, suffering, trauma, and heroism; linking spirituality and pedagogy; teaching with heart and soul; and bringing the body, spirituality, emotionality, and subjectivity into communication research and pedagogy NCA 2006 Annual Convention Page 441 NCA Policy on the Use of Audio-Visual Equipment It is the NCA policy to provide reasonable A/V support of presentations at its annual convention and at its conferences. NCA recognizes that such support is essential to some presentations and greatly enhances the effectiveness of others. The number of requests for A/V support has risen steadily in recent years and is likely to continue to increase, in terms of both the amount and the type of equipment that is needed. To help control the costs of equipment rental and to provide the best possible support of presenters, NCA has established the following guidelines regarding A/V support at its convention and conferences. 1. Request before the published deadline. The NCA Convention Manager and the Meeting Coordinator attempt to schedule programs with similar equipment needs into the same room in order to make maximum use of the rental. Therefore, it is critical that A/V support requests be submitted before the published deadline. The deadline is ordinarily the same as the deadline for program proposals. No A/V equipment will be provided to a program that fails to meet published deadlines. Keep requests to a minimum. It is tempting to request one of everything, just in case it is needed. Presenters and planners are asked to screen requests carefully and to submit only those that are essential to the program. As a general rule, the more sophisticated the equipment the more it costs to rent. Presenters and planners are asked to keep their requests as simple as possible. A chalkboard can substitute for a poster pad or overhead, etc. Expensive equipment will not be supplied. NCA will normally approve requests for the following equipment: chalkboard, easel, flip chart, audiocassette player/recorder, overhead projector, slide projector, and VCR. NCA will NOT normally approve requests for expensive equipment such as PC’s, camcorders, laser pointers, satellite links, teleconference equipment, LCD panels/projectors, and video data projectors. 2. 3. Short Courses. Short courses have a fee based on an assumption of a minimum standard of copying for handouts and a minimum level of A/V equipment. The base short course fee is established to offset the costs of operating all the short courses. Requests for non-traditional A/V will likely result in increases to the fees. Media Forums. NCA’s Media Forum programs are designed to facilitate discussion and presentation of programs related to leading edge research and technology. Therefore, Media Forums have priority when A/V resources are allocated and non-standard equipment is requested. Personal equipment is discouraged. Contracts for A/V equipment are negotiated by NCA. In many cases the hotel provides A/V services and has policies that prohibit use of personal equipment. Neither NCA nor the hotel can be responsible for the security of personal equipment. On-site rentals. Individuals may elect to rent equipment at the convention or conference at their own expense. Most hotels have an on-site A/V department. Such equipment may not be charged to the Association. NCA responsibility. The NCA National Office negotiates the A/V contract.
