PAID Summer 2007 2007 KORA SHRINE CIRCUS Tom Nason, Potentate In spite of the spring nor’easter that flooded our area and interrupted our schedules, the circus went on! The Lewiston shows went off without a hitch. Portland shows were cancelled on Monday but we were back in business Tuesday morning and really never missed a beat. While the crowds were small due to the weather conditions that enveloped the surrounding areas, those who did attend our 54th Annual Circus were treated to one of the best shows in recent memory. A big “Thank You” needs to go out to all of the Nobles, Ladies, and families who showed up and supported our Circus this year. My heartfelt thanks go out to the dedicated Nobles of the Circus Committee which was chaired by Jack Foulkes and Don Skillings, the Venue Chairs, and the countless Nobles and Ladies who worked so hard to ensure that anyone who visited our 54th Circus were treated to a 1st class event by 1st class people. Augusta is still ahead of us at this writing and we’re hoping for our usual large and enthusiastic crowds in our Capital City. 3rd Annual Kora Car Show & Fly In Twitchell’s Airport - Turner, Maine Sunday, July 15 Saturday, July 14 Car Show Evening Festivities include: Over 20 Classics plus... Judy thinks I have too many "Hi-Tech' gadgets but I think I need a few more to confuse me even further. Page 3 Board of Governors who work year round to ensure that this event is a success. I am positive that the 18th game will be better than the previous 17 with your support. Saturday August 4th is the Wilton Blueberry Festival Parade and I have designated this as a Kora Temple Parade. That means all of Kora's units will be in attendance for this parade. We are in hopes to have the Farmington Fairgrounds available for campers and make this a fun, family weekend. More information will certainly become available as we get closer. The next weekend will be a very busy one to say the least. Saturday, August 11 is the annual Western Mountain Shrine Club's Potentate's reception and parade. I extend an invitation to every Unit of Kora Temple to travel to Rangeley and enjoy their down home hospitality. Next up on Sunday, the 12th is our Kora Family Fun Day. This will be held at the Great Outdoors in Turner. We will have direct access to beautiful Pleasant Pond for swimming, tennis courts, volleyball, horse shoes, etc. Kora's Clown Unit is heading up this event and Director Mike Blais is promising a really fun day of family fun, entertainment, and loads of food. More information will be forthcoming on this great family day filled with Shrine fun! As you can see, the summer is going to be a very busy one for the Kora family! Please try and join us in as many functions as you can. Judy and I and your Divan look forward to every opportunity to enjoy the warm fraternal relationships that are contained within our Shrine. Please get your calendars out and mark off these dates as "Must Attend " Shrine events for the summer of 2007. In closing, I need to regress five years. As I write this article, it was five years ago today that my best friend, Ill. Pat MacFarland passed away. He had, as I am doing right now, his Sands article prepared to go out well before many of the events that are upcoming had even occurred. I have to admit that I have never erased that article for the 2002 Summer Sands and I never will. He spoke of the same things that we still look forward to in 2007. One thing that he always said still holds true and will forever "Kora's Nobles, Ladies, and Families are The Best of the Best" Here's to Pat, Jock, and Grampy Nason…….. We'll drink a toast to you in Scotland, Laddies! Until we are together again………. Tom As I write this article for the Sands, we are packing and getting ready to head to Scotland for our Potentate's Trip for 2007. Time has flown bye so quickly. By the time you get this, we'll be back and Circus and the Spring Ceremonial will be our most recent successful events! I know that to be the case because of the dedication and caring that has been extended to Judy and me to date by each of you. I know that we are all proud of Kora Temple and together we can grow and make our Temple even better in the future. The Summer Ceremonial is right around the corner and everything that you need to know is in this edition of the Sands. Our committee headed by Buddy "that mat won't hurt you" Gellatly has done a wonderful job to ensure that everyone that comes to the Oxford Fairgrounds will have a great time! Don't forget to bring your parrot head outfits for Judy's "Margaritaville Luncheon" and your Night Shirts for our 1st ever Night Shirt parade on Saturday evening. Thankfully, the Night Shirt parade will not be held on the streets of the greater Oxford Hills metroplex! We thought we might want to keep this to ourselves and not incite the natives so this parade will winde through the Fairgrounds only!!!! Our 18th Annual Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Game is scheduled for Friday evening, July 27th at Waterhouse Field, Biddeford. Game time is 7:00 PM and we look forward to another great evening featuring the State of Maine's finest graduated football players and cheerleaders. These young people have been chosen to represent their communities and high schools. Let's show our support of them by coming out and having a full house at Waterhouse Field! I would be thrilled to see a stadium full of "Old Red Fezzes' that evening so please try and attend as the games have been fantastic each and every year. Please support these fine young men, ladies, and their families. Remember also, that your support helps our kids at Shriner's Hospitals. This one single event helps with the transportation of Maine Kids to our Hospitals. I hope to see each of you at the game and I look forward to having the opportunity to support our Kids through this great event. I would be remiss if I did not thank the Lobster Bowl HOSPITAL ELECTS ILL. FRANK R. PREBLE In January 2007, Ill. Frank R. Preble was unanimously elected to the position of Vice Chairman of the Board of Governor's Executive Committee at the Springfield Shriners Hospital. This term will be fore three(3) years. In addition, he is presently Vice Chairman of the following committees; Performance Improvement, Strategic Planning and Joint Conference. He, also, serves on the Finance and Budget committee. Past Potentate Preble has served on the Board of Governor's at Springfield for the last six(6) years beginning in 2001. Prior to that, he served briefly at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Boston. Ill. Frank served as Potentate of Kora Shriners in 2001. He and his wife, Martha reside in Auburn, ME. and have two(2) children, Jake and Liza. May 12th is Clinic Day See page 13 for details. Kora Temple Smoking Policy Kora Temple's Trustees met on Monday, February 19 and voted to ban smoking in all areas of the interior of Kora Temple. This policy goes into effect immediately. Smoking receptacles will be placed at the exterior of the building. The Board of Governors and its committee members have been hard at work preparing for the upcoming 18th Annual Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic. On Sunday April 1st, we had over 300 parents and Student Athletes in attendance at our Annual Team Meeting held at Kora Temple. The purpose of the meeting is to inform all of the participants and their parents, what to expect by being selected to play or perform in this premier High School sporting event and the responsibility that comes along with it. We also make a presentation about Shriners Hospitals for Children. We always try to make this the highlight of the day with a powerful presentation and this year was no exception. With Vice Chairman of the Springfield Hospital and PP Frank Preble leading the way with a brief summary of our Hospitals, we then showed a very moving Patient Video titled “ Without Limits” featuring a former Burns patient Dan Caro, who was severely burned over 70 % of his body at the age of 2 and was treated at Boston Burns for over 6 years. As the video ended, the stage curtain opened to the sounds of the drums being played by Dan, an accomplished drummer from the music scene in New Orleans, all in attendance rose to give one of the many standing ovations of the afternoon. By listening and watching this 27- year old perform, you would never know he has no hands; he played flawlessly much to the crowds delight. Then came the bonus of the day for all in attendance, when Dan, an inspirational speaker in his spare time, addressed the crowd with a very moving and powerful speech that had everyone’s attention. I have seen many patient success stories over the years and have been fortunate to personally meet and spend time with some of them also, but I must admit, Dan was just an amazing human being, he certainly inspired everyone in attendance. After Dan’s performance, everyone was treated to the world famous Spaghetti feed that only the Androscoggin County Shrine Club, with assistance from the Second Section could do. In spite of the fact we ran 15 minutes ahead of schedule and sent 300 people down from Ceremonial Hall to the Dining Hall without notice, the meal was served without a hitch! Our thanks to all who assisted GREAT JOB! The day ended with the players and cheerleaders breaking into their respective Teams for the final instructions prior to leaving for the day. It certainly was an experience for all of participants and their families. As we move forward, during the second week of June we will be doing our Annual Game Ticket mailing to all of the Nobles of Kora Temple and new this year, we are also being able to include the Nobility of Anah Temple. We expect to see great results from this mailing. On the subject of tickets, if when you receive your book of Game Tickets and want to make a donation to the game but have now use for the tickets, please feel free to sent them back with your donation and we will distribute them to many area Recreation Departments for them to use with their kids. Last year we received back over 225 books of tickets! On Saturday, July 21st, we will be hosting our 2nd Annual Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic Golf Tourney, this year to be held at Fox Ridge Golf Course in Auburn. The 10AM Shotgun start Scramble Format Tourney is sure to sell out quickly this year. Last year we had over 100 golfers and we expect that we will fill the 144 slots available for this year. Please see the registration form elsewhere in this issue if the Sands for more information. Training Camps open on Sunday July 22nd, with the players at Hebron Academy and the Cheerleaders in Auburn at Central Maine Community College. Their week will be filled with practices and some fun entertainment stuff also. On Wednesday night we will have our Banquet at Hebron Academy with a great program featuring a guest speaker. If you are interested in stopping by the Training Camps during the week feel free to and we also will be putting out information on the Banquet for those who might be interested in attending. Then Friday the 27th it will be game day and we certainly hope you will choose to come down to Waterhouse Field in Biddeford to watch and support these student athletes and their coaches. Remember they have given up a week of their time to support the “World’s Greatest Philanthropy”, Shriners Hospitals for Children. So lets show them that we as Shriners, truly appreciate what they are doing for us by coming out to the game and supporting their efforts. Vol. 22, No. 3 Summer 2007 KORA SANDS From the Treasurer Page 5 MEMBERSHIP CHALLENGE Nobles and Ladies, are you a LEADER? Are you a positive, forward thinking person who would like to have an impact on the future of our KORA Shrine? If you are, we want your input on the Membership Team. This is a group of people who have pledged to work to make KORA a symbol of what can be done when determined people work toward a bright future. We are looking for Nobles and Ladies who will be able to provide the leadership needed to bring our current program, as well as future programs, to success. The Membership Committee has kicked off an ambitious project this year that we believe will start KORA on a growth path that will "shine in Shrine". The PLUS ONE program kicked off at the Annual Meeting and is currently on a fast track for results. PLUS ONE was enthusiastically received by Illustrious Sir Tom Nason and Chief Rabban Glen Lalumiere, who gave it their full support. We would be remiss if we didn't ackowledge the support of all of the Divan and Ladies in this project. For all of the times that they heard the committee chairman speak at Clubs and Units meetings, not a single one was caught sleeping during the talk! As this is written, the program has been presented a nearly all of the Shrine Club and Units Annual meetings, and has been extremely well received. When we hand out our Membership Toolkits, the Nobles are taking a step to bring KORA to our destination of positive growth in 2007, and beyond. While positive growth may seem like not much of a goal, the fact is that it is a fantastic goal, and one that can carry not just KORA but Shrine into the future generations. In 2005, out of 191 Shrine Temples, there were 14 that had positive growth, meaning that they brought in at least ONE MORE candidate than was lost to the Black Camel, suspensions and demits. How awesome will it be when KORA joins the ranks of the 7 % of the Shrine Temples that grew! We have had a great response, and the names of contacts who may become candidates are coming in at a rapid pace now. What a wonderful problem we have, being overwhelmed by the number of people who we have to call to invite into Shrine or Masonry! The members of this committee who are taking on this responsibility are few, but they are positive and completely sold on Shrine! This is what will bring candidates in to become a part of the world's best fraternity and the world's greatest philanthropy. And we will owe our growth to our most important asset, our own Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, who, in giving merely 10 minutes of their time to KORA will bring us to the goal of positive growth. I am going to be exploring the possibility of posting regular updates on PLUS ONE on the KORA Shrine website. If you have not visited it, you should, because it is truly impressive.( www.korashriners.org ) In closing, let me ask you, no, let me challenge you just as Illustrious Sir Tom has, "DO YOU HAVE YOUR FIVE?" Donations from Clubs, Units and others provide valuable and important support to the operations of the temple and a needed boost to specific events. So far this year, donations have been very good. Here is a list of what has been received. Central Maine Shrine Club York County Shrine Club Androscoggin Shrine Club Androscoggin Shrine Club Central Maine Shrine Club Greater Portland Shrine Club Legion of Honor Medical Unit Western Mountain Shrine Club Kennebec Valley Shrine Club January Ceremonial Oriental Band Other Miscellaneous Oil Valentines Soda fund Band 07 Bottle Drive Printer Printer Undesignated Undesignated Spring Ceremonial Gratuity Undesignated Undesignated $1,000 1,000 200 500 109 500 500 1,358 500 700 439 500 100 $7,406 RECORDERS RAMBLINGS First let me say I am sorry to report that dues need to increase for the 2008 year. The increase will be $10 making a total of $70. Let me suggest that you might look into buying a life membership. If you are 45 years old or more a life membership is currently $1100 which covers everything except hospital assessment. By buying a life membership you will insulate yourself from any future dues increase including the one for next year. A lifetime hospital assessment or PCM can be purchased anytime for $150 and will be added to the hospital endowment which will cover your assessment for eternity even upon your death. Please consider this as it will not only be a future benefit to you but also to Kora Temple. If you are younger than 45 life memberships are only slightly more expensive but are even more of a benefit to you as you likely will live to be a member that much longer. Fund raising makes up a significant part of Kora Temple’s budget. You can help in this effort by selling your circus tickets, helping with the car show, or helping with the festival of trees. It is not necessary that you buy tickets yourself but help by selling them. Everything you do to help will result in keeping dues down. Please join the fun at Kora by attending some of the events. Hopefully that is one of the reasons you joined, to enjoy the fun and fellowship of being a member. Ceremonials are including dances this year, so get the wife, girlfriend, or significant other out for a day or evening of fun. I look forward to seeing you at a future event. In The Faith, Paul D. All members are welcome. Kora has a full schedule of events coming up, so put on your fez join in the festivities. * KORA WIDOWS CLUB Maysel Huston, Secretary/Treasurer We widows have had an active six months since we have last been covered in the Sands. November we lunched at Rolandeaus in Auburn, December our president Eileen had us in for what is now our annual Christmas luncheon. January found us in Brunswick at Richard's. February we went to the Muddy Rudder in Yarmouth and had a record turnout. We decided it was a cure for our cabin fever. For March, Bruno's in Portland was our choice, another good turnout. April will be our annual meeting. Ginny Houston will be taking over as President at our luncheon at the Captain's Galley in Old Orchard. I know our visits to Brunswick and Ogunquit theaters will be included in their plans for next year. Linda England has agreed to chair the committee to plan a tree for the Fall Feztival of Trees. We plan to take first place, so you all be ready. If any of you widows want to join us, just call me at 282-0538.* WESTERN MOUNTAIN SHRINE CLUB Officers: Richard Morton, President 864-2337 Harry L. It seems as if I just got up from composing my last article for The Sands. The Club is busy. The circus is coming and some are coordinating buses to take the kids from the coastal area, placing posters, tending publicity, and getting tickets sold. Meanwhile, others are preparing our Hot Dog Wagon for selling dogs, chips, and sodas during the Project Graduation Car Show at Medomak Valley High School. Others are preparing for our annual raffle, and still others are preparing our "Train" for area parades. The Hot Dog Wagon, in addition to being at the Project Graduation Car Show, has also been requested to be present during the Fly-in and Car Show in Turner and during the Summer Ceremonial in Oxford. Noble Bob Barrett just announced he has acquired the donation of a garden tractor and mower for our annual raffle. You might remember, two years ago Bob acquired a very nice Cub Cadet tractor and mower. I haven't heard the make and model yet, but Bob stated the unit has a retail value of over $4,000. At that price, you know it has to be a good one. Tickets will be one for $5 or three for $10 and will be available as soon as we can get them printed. As in past years, ticket numbers will be limited and the drawing will be during our August 11 - Potentate's Reception September 6 - Regular Meeting - Pot Luck Supper - Sportsman Club House September 22 -Cookout -Poody Williams's House, Rangely Plantation - BYOB October 13 - Regular Meeting - Don Morton's Camp - Cookout - BYO food, BYOB November 1 - Regular Meeting - City Cove Office December 8 - Christmas Party - Country Club* **UNITS** CRAZY COPS Brian Carrier, Scribe Greetings and salutations to all. If you are reading this it means that the editor was gracious enough to publish it after it was late in arriving. You will have to forgive the style of this piece or the lack thereof. This will be my first attempt at writing in this type of forum. I'm used to corresponding with Postal managers, supervisors and postmasters. So that means that now I can write above a fourth grade level but I'm limited to the number of pictures that I can use. Just kidding boss. At this writing the circus will have past. Thanks to all the people that helped this year to make it a success. Its amazing to see the planning and dedication that goes into this every year by all the units. Thanks to guys in this unit who put on the meal for Lewiston. Another outstanding job. At our meeting on March 27th we tried and finalize the parade schedule for this year. It could still use a little tweaking but its looking like about ten parades this year. Several that we have done in the past and maybe a couple of new ones. There will be several temple functions also. Summer Ceremonial on June 9th, Wilton on August 4th, the Fly In on KORA KAMPERS Jon Burns, Scribe By the time the Summer Sands is out, we should all have our campers ready to go! The Spring meeting is at Bayley's Campground. On Friday, May 19th there will be a potluck supper. Plan to attend as the food is always great. Saturday we will have the Chinese Auction which is always great fun, the business meeting, a happy hour, and a buffet. If you haven't already done so, call Bayley's Campground at 883-6043 to make your reservation. If you haven't already made your plans, think about going on the Fall Karavan. The cut off date for signing up is the May meeting. If you need more information about the Karavan or have any Vol. 22, No. 3 Summer 2007 July 15th and the Lobster Bowl on July 27th. The summer ceremonial will be at the Oxford Fairground this year and promises to be a blast. Set up will be on Thursday, field days on Friday, and parade on Saturday as well as Margarita Ville. Plan on attending with your Lady for a good time As mentioned the Fly In will be July 15th. Hopefully everyone can show the night before to help with set up. They are allowing us to camp over the night before so it would be great if we could sort of circle the wagons or campers in this case and make a night of it. The Lobster Bowl will be on the 27th of July and is shaping up to be great game. Hopefully this year without as much rain. Well, I guess that this is all for now. Next time I'll work on being on time and maybe even have a pic to go with it. Till the sands blow our way again, fair thee well…* KORA SANDS summer we'll have a photo gallery to be proud of. The other thing to think about is identifying those Nobles who do not own computers and how do we keep them up-to-date? Welcome back snowbirds. I hope you find everything where you left it. We missed you. Summer Ceremonial in Oxford will be held at the "Margaritaville" Fair Grounds and will be loaded with fun. Did you do your part to make this a big class? New Nobles we welcome you and please don't forget to check out the Funsters.* Page 7 increased our attendance and our performance. We look forward to riding this year and with as many as last year in not more with new members. Always looking for new members and in riding parades it is kind of a breeze. So to all with music talent or no, the band welcomes you. We have the best room in the center--all newly refurbished. Always music to enrich the soul. Our schedule has yet to be constructed. Our man in charge is Mark Marshall, one of the younger members somewhere in his 50's. Average age is about 70--all very young at heart. Our most senior member just completing his 96th spin around the sun, continues to do as well as anyone. Norton Churchill may be the most experienced bandsman in all Shrinedom. We pride ourselves in having Norton, a living legend, an original band member in1931, the year I was born. Am 76 and still blowing my horn. Our job is to provide the music for our kids and the public. We are strongly supported by our wives, friends, etc. Our dedication to our unit is and has been very strong. It is important for all to know that we are several band units. Our concert band takes the lead followed by our marching band, Dixie land band, German band, and big band. KORA BAND Harold Burbank, Scribe KORA FUNSTERS Gene "EEYORE" Tanguay, Scribe Finally, It's time for the Funsters to get busy. We've been dormant for too long. This time of year is hard to write about. We don't get into costumes until the circus and the next time is Summer Ceremonial. The other problem is the seasonal lag between the "Have you ever seen a time this article is writnaked lion?" ten and when it is read. Let me explain the irony. I received the notice that the article was due on the coldest record-breaking day in March. And a week later, I sat down to organize my thoughts while 15 inches of new snow clogged my driveway. You and I will read the printed final results of this writing when we are beginning to think about mowing our lawns. Talking with some of the Funsters, it seems we will be taking Ill. Tom Nason up on his offer of a free meal for doing five shows at the circus. If all of Koradom answers the challenge it will be a circus we'll all be proud of and the workload will be shared by many. Lady Judy Nason is giving me a real social life this year. The Spring Ceremonial is Italian theme giving me, and a lot of other Nobles a good reason to get out of the house for an evening of fun with our Ladies. Have you been to the Kora website? If you haven't you should check it out. The Webmaster has improved it again. We can get more information faster than a Shriner could ever get in the past. But Adam, my computer smart person, found a problem. We lost our photo gallery pictures with the improvement. We have a solution to this minor problem. If you show up to Funster functions I'll generate current pictures and by the end of the At this writing, the snow birds will be happy to know they missed another great March snow storm, leaving a foot or more all over. Rain at the end of the snow fall left a crust strong enough to hold me. Of course it froze during the night first. Other warm weather birds are arriving including an early fight of Canadian Geese. About time for our band birds to pack up and head back to God's country. The picture is of a circus performance last year. One might be able to see a decent attendance which always pleases our able band director, Jerry Brooks. We look forward to another year of music with as many if not more this season. We discovered last year that riding in parades We do see a growing problem each year. After our uniforms hang in the closet all winter, they tend to shrink. We need to work on this problem during the winter months. We are ready for circus performances and by the time you read this they will have been concluded. OUR BAND LADIES will insure that we do our best. We are always at our best when they are in support with us. Many thanks to Ed for his leadership this past year and good luck to the new incoming potentate. 2007 will be banner year for us all.* Units continued on page 10 Kora Shriners You can now make all your Kora purchases online using a Credit Card on our new SECURE online payment method. It will give our unit time to take it easy. We can rest our feet and be ready to march next summer. During this time of year, there is not much going on with the flag unit, so it will give us a good rest. A few of us have been going to the directors meeting at the Shrine Center. Hopefully keeping up on the activities that are in progress in the shrine for the coming months. Parades, potentates trip, circus and spring ceremonial, all very interesting. Last month, we did get a letter from Doug Jenney, who spends the winter in Italy and Florida. That's where the tornado hit. He was very lucky, only minor damage. Frank Mitchell and Fred Lincoln are down there, but don't think they got hit. Right now, Larry Grady is in Florida for a few weeks. I miss him for that leaves me without a driver. Just hope he is having a good time. Do miss him. We are looking for new members to join the Flag unit. With the decline in membership in the Masons from what it once was, it is really difficult to get members. We got a telephone call from JoAnn Newman at Christmas time. She is in South Carolina, doing fine. She would like news from the flag unit now and then. The picture above is our director Russ Fish. He is giving orders to our drill Master, Bob Newbert, just how to command our unit while we are marching. The picture was taken at our annual Ladies Night in Rockport. Hoping we will have a good summer. We want to thank Lauren and Tom Nason for a great job.* KORA SANDS KORA KLOWNS Paul "Skoota" Castilloux, Scribe As of this writing, I am in high hopes that the circus went without a hitch. For some unknown reason, I had to submit this edition before the circus came to town. As in the past, I'm sure the clowns did a fantastic job with the make-up and the crowd. I'm also sure that the new klowns and enjoyed themselves and they done themselves proud. Congratulations Joey's. Welcome to the real clown world guys. I'd like to pass along our well wishes to Les Bridges, Zane Libby, Rod Martin, Jim McKinley, Bill Sawyer, and Harvey Weiss and to all the other old-timers that I may have forgotten. Sorry if I missed anyone. I didn't mean to. I'm sure that I will be reminded. Hey Shorty, don't see too much of you anymore. What's going on? You are welcome to join us anytime you want. Feel free to join us. We meet once a month, at midnight, at heartbreak Hotel. Well, when you receive this article, it will be summer. Spring sprung and I hope everyone enjoyed it. I hope the parades don't get rained out and that everyone will be participating in as many parades as possible. I hope the circuses were a success as it is our major fundraiser. I also hope that you Nobles from Kora country had a chance to attend the circus and make yourself known to the clowns, and that you also brought family and some friends to see a great show. For the new clowns, I'm sure it was an experience that you won't forget. You may not be able to calculate how many were at the shows, but there were many and you had the opportunity to make people smile. Congratulations on a job well done. Don't forget, a smile goes a long way. As time goes on in a child's world, one thing that will stick out in their minds when they think of the circus is the clowns. Oh, they will remember the elephants, but they will always remember the clowns. Guaranteed. For some of the clowns, it was a chance to shine for the first time. No matter how many times you practiced putting on make-up in private, it is not anything like being in person, being in front of thousands of people, and trying to show the public your talents. For me, I don't have any talent, so it is easy for me. But for the rest of you, always look the best you can. A good clown should always make a good impression with the public. Children like clowns even though they don't quite understand who the person is behind the makeup. Oh yes, some children are petrified of clowns, but they are few. For some reason, they have had a bad encounter in the past that cannot be explained. And I really feel bad for these children. It's not their fault. Hopefully as they get older, they will come to have a better understanding that we are just as human as they are. Well, where spring is blonde guy, our parade season is in full swing. Memorial Day in old Orchard Beach, Yarmouth clam Festival, Madison Page 10 Anson Day Parade, Moxie Day parade in Lisbon, Wilson blueberry Festival, Clinton's Lions Day Parade, the Veterans Day Parade in Portland, and the Freiberg Thayer, to name a few. There are a lot more. And we participated in the screening clinics in May. Overall, we keep busy and we have fun. We are a close-knit family. So please keep in mind that you are invited to join our unit any time, but the sooner the better. Don't waste time thinking about joining a unit, join one - join ours. You'll be glad you did. I guarantee it. Some people just talk about doing something while others actually do something and they are happy they did. Don't get left out. You'll be sorry. Time is precious, so get active and get a satisfying feeling that comes with belonging to a unit. There is a lot of fun to be had for you and your family. Get them involved in Shrinedom. It's a family matter. Some day as your children get older, they will remember the great times they had with their father or brother, and they will want to be a part of our great fraternity of Nobles. In case you are wondering who wrote this article, I was a white face called "Bashful", but now I'm a tramp called "Skoota". In closing, I want to wish everyone of you in Kora land a great summer and great health. Like Red Skelton always said, "May God Bless." Be proud of who you are and who you represent. "Skoota" KORA LEGION OF HONOR (A Short History of a Unit with a Long Tradition) In 1927, Dr. Adam P. Leighton of Portland, then Potentate of Kora Temple, made a decision to form a uniform military unit that could be used for escort duty as well as present precision drills at ceremonials and to represent the Kora Temple at outside functions and parades. This new group called the Legion of Honor was trained in secrecy and made its first appearance at the January, 1928 Ceremonial. It was a real surprise to the nobility present and the Legion of Honor made an outstanding impression that carries through to this day. Membership in the Legion of Honor is drawn from all military ranks and grades. This democracy has been the key to this organization, with all members giving their best for the good of the Legion. Over the years with a compliment of 100+ members, the Legion has been noted for the outstanding quality of their drills. It was the first Kora unit to parade as an organized drill organization and to execute intricate maneuvers while parading. This was in Boston in 1930 at an American Legion parade. To list all of the major events to which the Legion has sent its drill unit would take too much space. Let it be known that, the unit has always been ready to participate in any Shrine function, Kora Ceremonials, Northeast and Imperials. The Kora Legion of Honor is also a member of the National Legion of Honor. Kora Temple and our unit received its charter in 1985. KORA KARTS Jim Howard, Scribe Not much happening at this time. The Kart Unit is always looking for new members, looking for a good-time and a chance to get involved join the Karts, talk to any member of the Unit they will be glad to assist you. Good luck to Dave Thompson on a complete recovery from his injuries received from an accident while loading his 4 wheeler. Lost to the Black Camel; Noble Julian Beale a life member of Kora Shrine, member of the Kora-Karts and Kora-Flags. He will be sadly missed by all. By the time this is read Parade season will be under way for another season. Don't forget to show up at the work sesions to keep the Karts rolling, all help is appreciated. Congratulations to Jeff Ryder the big (FIVE-O). SUMMER CEREMONIAL OXFORD FAIR GROUNDS June 7-10 a good time for all. Vol. 22, No. 3 Summer 2007 Legion membership is open to any Noble of Kora Temple who is in good standing and who is serving or has served in the Armed Forces (regular, reserve, or national guard) of the United States or its Allies. We invite you to join us in keeping one of the oldest units of Kora Temple, with a long history of tradition, alive and strong in numbers. Visit with us in the Legion room at the bottom of the stairs at the temple and get an appreciation of what the unit has to offer. The Kora Legion of Honor is moving forward in its 80 years of service to Kora Temple. How about YOU joining the Legion of Honor and keep the tradition going. See you at the Summer Ceremonial at the Oxford Fair Grounds.* KORA SANDS KORA LOG ROLLERS Doug Irish, Scribe The Log Rollers held their election of officers on the first Sunday in January, with all current officers re-elected for another year. As I sit here writing this, I can see 20 degrees above the needle on the thermometer and it is snow-sleet-and rain out there. I'm sure glad I left Florida when I did! You can live in Florida all your life and not see this weather! Three Log Roller couples are looking forward to the trip to Scotland with the big group and the Potentate the end of March. This will be a great time! Parade season is almost on us and the Log Rollers will have a meeting in early April to discuss and vote on our up coming schedule. Don't put your rubbers and snow shovels away, it ain't over yet!* Page 11 Sam Leach has advised that there will be no fishing derby this year. The pond needs replenishing of bass as well as other needed maintenance work. He plans to have things ready for next year. For those of you unfamiliar with the Derby, it is an annual event held in Arundle at Sam Leach's place on the Saturday on Father's Day weekend. The Derby is for disabled children for any kind that can make it. For information on this event gives him a call at 207-4682527 or e-mail him at sleachjr@hotmail.com. Everything is free, including food and tackle. Prizes are handed out for the biggest fish and all sorts of things. The event is sponsored by the 19th District Masons and the Knights of Columbus, assisted by the cob and Boy Scouts. Sam will guarantee the best bass fishing anywhere in his big pond. Norm stands as lifeguard. He can't swim, but he looks good, just being there. Besides the pond is only a few feet deep, and he wades very well. I believe that he has a life-saving certificate in wading. With the circus coming up in a few weeks, we are wondering if Jr. may have something up his sleeve. Lately he has been grousing about the lack of big animals in the show. I hope that he doesn't decide to show up in a bear suit or something. Remember Jr., loose animals that large are likely to get shot, especially roaming around the Civic Center. We will find something constructive for you to do like hold the trash bag or direct people to the washrooms. Junior has only one problem with circus animals and that is elephant odor. Just getting near them makes his nasal hair curl, he says. He did have a problem with a lion a few years ago when he was caught in the wrong place when one of them decided to relieve himself. Most of it landed on Jr. before landing on the floor. I understand that elephant odor had nothing on Jr. that day. At the next writing, the parade season will be upon us. Remember we are still looking for good writers. Good-looking and some guys are even welcome. We will change that right away to fit in with a standard profile of balding, overweight, gray-haired old men. Come to think of it, it was just last month I did. Not much else has happened these past 30 days or so. Everyone is still in hibernation, I guess we're basking in some warmer clime. Caller ID may have something to do with it also. As promised, the above photo was taken in our it entrapment snoops who claim it is the face of the Phantom. Perkins says that he can positively identify him after he caught him fooling around with some nurses at the hospital. Just bad actor has caused all kinds of trouble around the moped Ville and he needs to be stopped. A generous reward is being offered for information leading to his capture. SECOND SECTION Who comes here-who comes here-who comes here? A Noble seeking five new members for our fraternity, it's the call to arms by our new membership chairman and if he is right, we need to be out there shaking the bushes and keeping applications ready or face higher dues as costs of everything is going up. I know Second Section will step up to the plate and "due" what we can to champion the cause. Well, we celebrated a couple of birthdays recently, first it was Peggy Gatchell, I won't say how young Peg is, but she says she is turning 40 and taking her time about it. Rick told some funny things about her. Kit Sawyer made spaghetti and all the fixin's; a good time was had by all at the Elk's Club. Vol. 22, No. 3 Summer 2007 The next one was Sue Zubiate and again we won't say the word. She said aging is the only available way to live a long time. Rick Gatchell read a poem he wrote, and yours truly said a few words of wisdom about her husband, Mike. Sue opened her gifts, mostly jokes; cake was eaten; happy birthday was sung; the place was Graziano's; and a good time was had there also. As I write this I think the snowbirds are forming the caravan for the trip back to Maine and the way this winter unfolded, they probably shouldn't hurry as there was more winter in March than January. The Mosher family enjoyed a nice respite in the "Sunshine State" and left in time to miss the St. Patty's day storm. Git-R-Done. There hasn't been any activity at the temple lately, so not much to report on other than a leak in our room that had to be repaired. Just getting ready for the circus, speaking of which, we heard one of the acts has a nice looking "ass." It's not what you think and although it might stink, its gray, has long ears and eats grass.
