What is a mole?
• Scientist needed a convenient method to
accurately count the number of atoms,
molecules, or formula units

• Since atoms and molecules are so small, it’s
impossible to actually count them.

• The mole (mol) is the SI unit used to
measure the amount of a substance
• A mole is represented by exactly 12g of
carbon-12

• Through experimentation, a mole was
established as having 6.02 x 1023 particles

• This number is named after Amedeo
Avogadro who in 1811 determined the
volume of one mole of gas.
