Sarah Palin vs. Barack Obama By Jeff Emanuel Sarah Palin: A Champion of Common Sense Conservative Values Biographical Information Compiled by Frances Rice Governor Sarah Palin is the first woman governor of Alaska and made history on December 4, 2006 when she took office as that state’s 11th governor. Her top priorities as governor have been resource development, education and workforce development, public health and safety, and transportation and infrastructure development. During her first legislative session, Governor Palin’s administration passed two major pieces of legislation – an overhaul of the state’s ethics laws and a competitive process to construct a gas pipeline. Under Governor Palin’s leadership, Alaska invested five billion dollars in state savings, overhauled education funding, and implemented the Senior Benefits Program that provides support for lowincome older Alaskans. She created Alaska’s Petroleum Systems Integrity Office to provide oversight and maintenance of oil and gas equipment, facilities and infrastructure, and the Climate Change Subcabinet to prepare a climate change strategy for Alaska. Governor Palin is chair of the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission, a multi-state government agency that promotes the conservation and efficient recovery of domestic oil and natural gas resources while protecting health, safety and the environment. She was recently named chair of the National Governors Association (NGA) Natural Resources Committee, which is charged with pursuing legislation to ensure state needs are considered as federal policy is formulated in the areas of agriculture, energy, environmental protection and natural resource management. Prior to being named to this position, she served as co-chair of this committee. Prior to her election as governor, Palin served two terms on the Wasilla City Council and two terms as the mayor of Wasilla. During her tenure, she reduced property tax levels while increasing services and made Wasilla a business friendly environment, drawing in new industry. As governor, she is the commander of the Alaska National Guard, the frontline of our national defense structure. She has served as chair of the Alaska Conservation Commission, which regulates Alaska's most valuable non-renewable resources: oil and gas. She was elected by her peers to serve as president of the Alaska Conference of Mayors. In this role, she worked with local, state and federal officials to promote solutions to the needs of Alaska's communities. Governor Palin arrived in Alaska with her family in 1964, when her parents came to teach school in Skagway. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in communications-journalism from the University of Idaho in 1987. She graduated from Wasilla High School in 1982 and has lived in Skagway, Eagle River and Wasilla. She is married to Todd Palin, who is a lifelong Alaskan, a production operator on the North Slope and a fourtime champion of the Iron Dog, the world's longest snow machine race. Todd and Governor Palin fish in Bristol Bay with their children – Track, Bristol, Willow, Piper and Trig. Through Todd’s Yup'ik grandmother, Alaska’s Native heritage plays an important role in their family. Track enlisted in the U.S. Army on Sept. 11, 2007. Governor Palin is now the proud grandmother of her first grandchild, Tripp Easton Mitchell Johnston. Prior to taking office, Governor Palin served on numerous boards and commissions throughout the state. She was active in her family’s pursuits – including serving as a sports team mom and school volunteer. She also runs marathons. She is a lifetime member of the NRA and enjoys hunting, fishing, Alaska history, and all that Alaska's great outdoors has to offer. Interview with HUMAN EVENTS Political Editor John Gizzi Sarah Palin Honored As Conservative of the Year By Human Events “Thank you, sir. It is an honor to be named your ‘‘Conservative of the Year.’” That’s how Governor Sarah Palin began her third interview for the year in 2008 with HUMAN EVENTS Political Editor John Gizzi. She spoke to Gizzi in April 2008 as the first of 16 Republicans he interviewed for The “Veepstakes” election-year feature. Governor Palin then sat down with Gizzi during the National Governors Association meeting in Philadelphia in July 2008. She spoke again to Gizzi on December 12, 2008 about her historic candidacy as the Republican vice presidential nominee as well as about current issues and her future. Both the “Veepstakes” and the December 12th interviews were arranged by veteran Republican political consultant Holly Robichaud. Speaking from her office in Juneau, Governor Palin set the scene: “It’s five below, not too cold to snow, which is nice, absolutely beautiful and white and crisp,” and then Gizzi began the interview with her: GIZZI: Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss singled you out for praise after you campaigned for him and he won re-election in the run-off in Georgia earlier this month. What did you do that was so helpful to Sen. Chambliss, who won by a relatively large margin? PALIN: Georgia was a blast. People were fired up to re-elect him. It certainly wasn’t me. It was him. When he was on stage, people were cheering. I think the rest of the country, those who were concerned about checks and balances in Washington, D.C., were very excited about the opportunity for me to help out a little bit there. And we made sure we did have those checks and balances that came with his re-election. I was very thankful he was reelected, and very thankful for my state of Alaska. Saxby is pro-development and wants to make sure that our nation becomes energy independent. Alaska can help. As opposed to the positions his opponent had been taking, he can help us progress toward that end. His opponent [Democrat Jim Martin], I believe, would have worked to lock up more of Alaska. By Marjorie Dannenfelser It looks like Sarah Palin won't be fading away. Not if Saxby Chambliss has anything to say about it. "I can't overstate the impact she had down here," said Chambliss shortly after his surprisingly solid 15point victory in the December 2 Georgia Senate runoff. Chambliss, who went from a 49.8-46.8 percent lead on November 4 to a 57-43 victory over Democrat Jim Martin in the runoff (Georgia law requires an absolute majority), credited Palin with helping his campaign "peak" with four hugely attended election-eve rallies. "All these folks did a great job coming in," he said, referring to an all-star cast of Republicans who made appearances on his behalf. "But when she walks in a room, folks just explode." Despite the best efforts of the media, left-of-center feminists, and a brigade of political elites, including more than a few Beltway Republicans, to write obituaries for Palin's national political career, she continued to be the second biggest phenomenon of the 2008 election cycle, behind only our new President Barack Obama. "I am not going to Washington to seek their good opinion," she said in her convention acceptance speech, referring to the media. And gain it, she did not. But their disdain--like that of the abovementioned elites--seems only to fan the firestorm of support for her. Witness the independent "Team Sarah" website, started September 15, 2008 by the Susan B. Anthony List, the pro-life group I head. Every time Palin is hammered by the media, this stable of online supporters grows. Our Facebook-style political networking site has grown from 50 members to 60,000 in less than two months, the biggest surges coming when Palin-bashing crests. These are highly motivated grassroots activists, some involved in politics for the first time, some seasoned types, all awaiting the next Palin project. Some of the most eloquent are women ecstatic over the new brand of feminism Palin represents: populist and prolife. There is no other woman on the national political stage like her--and hasn't been in recent times. To whom could she be compared--Geraldine Ferraro, Hillary Clinton, Barbara Boxer, Dianne Feinstein? She doesn't begin to fit this cookie-cutter model of pro-choice, pro-gender-quota woman in politics that leftfeminism has served up. But Palin has forebears in American politics. She looks a lot more like the early suffragists than anyone on the national stage now, especially in her pro-life stance. Susan B. Anthony, for whom my organization is named, for instance, called abortion "child murder." Elizabeth Cady Stanton called it a sickening symptom of women's mistreatment: "When we consider that women are treated as property, it is degrading to women to treat our children as property to be disposed of as we see fit." Under media attack and scrutiny, Palin and her family became a kind of microcosm of America's "crisis" abortion debates. Her Down Syndrome baby Trig and her pregnant teenage daughter are witnesses to the life-affirming attitudes the early feminists held. And Palin operates in a grievance-free environment. She likes being a woman. It is apparent, attractive, and typical of what most American women feel, or would like to. She gives every appearance of loving her role as a wife and mother of a bunch of kids. She lives as if she believes in the natural complementarity of men and women, rather than the supposed enmity and competition of the sexes depicted as universal by left feminism. Sarah Palin – Our Next President? Visit Team Sarah at http://www.teamsarah.org/ on the Internet. Team Sarah is a project of the Susan B. Anthony List, an organization founded in 1992 and named after the suffragette who fought for women's rights and against slavery. Susan B. Anthony possessed the core values and convictions that embraced all human rights and human dignity. She stood up for rights for slaves, women, and unborn children. She lived out her values consistently, as does Governor Sarah Palin. Anthony lived with backbone and determination and confidence and so does Governor Sarah Palin who was our candidate for vice president in 2008. Governor Palin has what it takes to be our next president.
