Introduction to Photoshop: The Color-Wheel 1. Start computer and logon. 2. Open Photoshop by double clicking on the Photoshop icon on the desktop. 3. A blank Photoshop screen will appear. 4. Along the menu bar in the upper left hand corner of the screen, click “File” and a drop down menu will appear. 5. Select “Open” which is the second item on the drop down menu. 6. A new window will appear. On the left side bar of the “Open” window, double-click on the “Ricks 01” icon. 7. Another window will open that contains a number of folders. At the top of the window, double click on the “Classes” folder. 8. Yet another window will appear. A long list of folders will show inside the “Classes” folder. Scroll down the list until you find the “PGJ-Common” folder. 9. Double click on the “PGJ-Common” folder. Scroll down to the “ColorWheelImages” folder. 10. Double click on the “ColorWheelImages” folder to open it. 11. Double click to open the file titled “color-wheel A” onto the Photoshop canvas. A blank color wheel will appear in the Photoshop window. 12. On the tool bar at the top, click on “Layer” for a drop down menu to appear. Select “New.” From the side menu that pops out after you’ve selected “New,” choose the “Layer” command. 13. Another window will appear asking you if you want to name the layer “Layer 1.” Click “OK.” 14. Now you will have created a layer that sits on top of the original color-wheel. You will be able to color the wheel and make other alterations without modifying the original color-wheel image. 15. In the lower right-hand side of the window there is a “Layers” box. 1. The “eye” toggles between on & off to allow the viewer to see all or only some of the layers that have been create. 2. The tool icon next to the “eye” shows what tool has been applied to that layer. 3. The lock seals or opens the layer for alteration. Double click on the pad lock to open layer 1 so that Photoshop tools can be used to color over the wheel. The pad lock will disappear from the right side of the blue layer when the layer is unlocked. 16. Click the small arrow on the Swatches palette to open the palette menu. Select the “Small List” option. 17. After selecting the “Small List” command, a list of color swatches with their color names will appear in the tool bar. 18. In the Swatches palette, scroll down half way until you come to a color titled “Pure Red.” 19. Right click on the little black triangle in the lower right hand corner of the “Eye-dropper” option in the tool bar. Select the first option labeled “Eye-dropper Tool.” Use the “Eyedropper Tool” to select the “Pure Red,” swatch from the palette. 20. Notice the Toolbar options along the left hand side of the canvas. 21. Positioning the cursor over the tool will activate a label that identifies the tool. 22. Right-click on the paint brush to the right of the “Bandaid” and select the “Brush Tool.” 23. Once a tool option is selected, choices for the tool will appear as an additional tool bar under the menu bar at the top of the canvas. Click on the “Brush” drop down menu to choose the size and type of stroke you wish to use for your project. 24. Once the “Brush Tool” selected, begin filling in the red section of the wheel. 25. Repeat the same procedure to fill in the blue and yellow sections on the color wheel. Select the “Pure” yellow and the “Pure” blue from the color list. 26. After you have painted in the primary colors, continue the process described above to paint in the secondary colors. Select “Pure orange,” “Pure green,” and “Pure violet.” 27. After filling in the primary and the secondary colors, the colorwheel will look like this. 28. Follow the same procedure to add the tertiary colors. Use “Pure green cyan” for blue/green. Use “Pure blue violet” for blue/violet. And select “Pure violet magenta” for violet red. 29. Once you’ve completed the color-wheel, place your cursor over the “File” option in the menu bar at the top of the screen and select “Save As” from the drop down menu. 30. A “Save As” window will appear. Type “CWyour name” to title the file and save to the “Colorwheels” folder in the “PGJ Common” folder on the server.
