Welcome back from the summer break. It was great to see and meet so many

It seems like all I hear from people these days is how busy they are, how there

              Health Reimbursement Arrangements – New IRS Revenue Ruling
Health Reimbursement Arrangements (HRA’s) are employer-owned accounts that allow participants to be
reimbursed for eligible out-of-pocket expenses, including copays, coinsurance and deductibles. HRA’s are
typically tied to a Consumer Driven Health Plan, or High Deductible Health Plan, typically creating lower health
insurance premiums for employees and employers. Employers will contribute a pre-determined dollar amount
for each employee into the account and the employee will have a set amount of time in which the funds must be
claimed. HRA’s allow for employees to be reimbursed for eligible expenses from a pool of funds set aside by the
employer. In many instances, the employee has to meet a certain deductible threshold before the HRA will start
to pay out.

The new IRS Revenue Ruling addresses one of the general requirements that limits an HRA from providing
benefits to a designated beneficiary other than the employee’s spouse or dependents. The new Revenue Ruling

                   SPHR/PHR CERTIFICATION

At the September 20 Chapter Meeting, the Human Resources
Association held its 2nd annual Certification Recognition event.
Members certified as PHR (Professional in Human Resources) or
SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources) received certificate
plaques. Melissa Lee from IntegNet and Eileen Blanckaert from
Grande Cheese were recently certified and gave brief testimonials
about the certification process.


                 CERTIFICATION STUDY GROUP

The Human Resources Association will be sponsoring
another study group for PHR and SPHR certifications
in Spring, 2007. The study group meets for 9-weeks,
one night per week. Study sessions are led by a
facilitator. Materials are available for purchase through

                        SHRM Pinnacle Awards

  The second annual “Summer Institute on Board and Leader
Development: Collaboration and Community” was held in Fond du Lac,
Wisconsin on June 15, 2006. The theme was “Stimulating Zest, Meaning,
and Purpose to Your Organization.” The program was designed to
improve the community by developing the knowledge and skills of leaders
of not-for-profit organizations, including members of boards of directors
and senior organization staff. Influential individuals in leadership and
community development provided keynote addresses.

The leadership of many not-for-profit organizations often rests heavily on
volunteer board members and staff members who may lack the
knowledge and skills necessary for maximum effectiveness. Recognizing
this, the program was created to provide support in developing their
leadership skills and understanding their responsibilities as board
members in areas such as fundraising, planning and financial
management. Partnering in this effort are multiple agencies in the Fond
du Lac community, including the Fond du Lac Area Human Resources
Association, Marian College Center for Spirituality & Leadership and the
Fond du Lac Area United Way.

                                                  Fighting the Flu and Colds
 As much as we don't want to recognize it, the cold and flu season is fast approaching, so it would be advantageous for
 all of us to be proactive to protect ourselves. Here are few of the tips that might be of help to you.
     •     Get your flu shot
     •     Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet
     •     Drink plenty of liquids (like water - 8 - 8 ounce glasses per day at a minimum)
     •     Get plenty of sleep (at least 8 hours per night)
     •     Wash your hands frequently, especially after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing.
 People carrying the cold or flu virus can be contagious at least one day before they have
 symptoms and up to four days after actually feeling sick - that it why it is important to stay home.
 Cold and flu viruses are very contagious and spread easily through the air when someone
 coughs or sneezes. Also, touching things the sick person has handled can also infect you. To
 avoid passing the illness around to other family members, be sure to cover your mouth when you cough and sneeze.
 For a healthy adult, the flu is a major misery, but not usually life-threatening. However, for older adults and for those
 with chronic diseases, the flu virus can be dangerous or even deadly.
 Antibiotics will not cure a virus and since the flu and colds are both caused by viruses, so antibiotics will NOT help.
 They are only effective in fighting bacteria. In addition, inappropriate antibiotic use for viral illnesses contributes to the
 major problem of antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria that are developing in the U.S.
 Sinus congestion, colored nasal discharge and headaches are often symptoms of colds. These symptoms do NOT
 necessarily mean you have a bacterial infection. Cold symptoms usually get worse the first three to five days of feeling
 sick and then gradually improve. Coughs can linger for two to three weeks after other symptoms disappear.
 When should you call the doctor? If you do come down with the flu or flu-like symptoms that do not improve in three to
 five days or if you experience any of the following symptoms, it is time to call the doctor:

    •     A fever of 102 degrees or above -                      •   Persistent cough or production of phlegm
    •     Chest pain                                             •   Ear pain or stiff neck
    •     Shortness of breath                                    •   Unusual drowsiness or irritability
          when checked by mouth
Bottom line—take extra special care of yourself during the cold & flu season so you can stay healthy! It’s not fun being
sick!
