 From the Principal Mr. Severson:

                                                   Holiday Greetings from the Principal!

Greetings from Gregory Middle School! On behalf of all of us here at Gregory Middle School, I
want to wish you and all those close to you a Joyous Holiday Season and a New Year of Happiness and
Hope for a World at Peace. We are all blessed with many things in our lives but our children will always
rank at the top of the list. Please take the opportunity during Winter Break to spend quality time with
your children and let them know that you care and love them - they're worth it! Thank you for sharing
your children with us on a daily basis, they help to fulfill our lives as well as yours! Happy Holidays!

I also wanted to take the time to thank everyone who attended the Middle School Schedule Parent
Night presentations that we provided at Gregory. We are confident that this new schedule, which includes
increased class time in all areas, will help to meet the ever-changing needs of our students in the areas of
both Core Curriculum and Exploratory Curriculum.

From the Assistant Principal Kimmer Cornish:

Wow, winter is upon us…

School Closings:
With the brisk wind nipping at our noses, we want to remind you that this year things have
changed a bit for school closing information.

Thanks to the Connect-Ed system, the district will be

       Radio Television
WGN 720 AM CBS Channel 2
WBBM 780 AM WMAQ Channel 5

                                      CLTV – Cable

Please be aware that while closing information is given to the stations as quickly as possible, it is
at the discretion of each station to decide when and whether it airs the notifications. A recorded message
advising of school closings or early dismissal can be heard by dialing the District 204 Information Line at
375-3015. Parents can find out about their child's specific school by calling the Emergency Closing
Center Hotline at 1-847-238-1234. Begin by dialing the Hotline number then enter Gregory's main
number (630) 428-6300, beginning with the area code. Information for additional schools can be obtained
by staying on the line and entering the area code and the main number of the particular school. Parents
can also check the Emergency Closing Center's website at http://www.emergencyclosings.com. If schools
are not closed, it is ultimately the responsibility of the parent or guardian to decide whether conditions are
safe for their individual children, in allowing them to attend school. If a parent or guardian decides to
keep their children at home due to weather conditions, it will count as an excused absence.

Staying warm when we do have school:
On the days that we do get to attend school and it is bitterly cold, well, I’m always chilly, please
remember to dress for the weather. The following are some helpful hints for those winter mornings when
you are picking out your wardrobe:

   1. Dress for warmth, not always beauty! You can stand next to Mrs. Cornish or Mrs. Maloney and
you will definitely look cooler without your hat, coat, scarf, or mittens, but we will be toasty
warm!!! Check out Mrs. Maloney’s hat, it is warm and stylish!!!
   2. Try wearing layers! They need to be lightweight and loose fitting. This helps to avoid
      perspiration and subsequent chill.
   3. Try to keep your feet as dry as possible and even though the old wives tale said to put on an extra
pair of socks, if it makes your shoes too tight, your feet will get cold anyway!

Finally, please remember that students are not allowed into the building before 7:45 a.m. except
for cases of extreme cold. Dress warm so that you can remain healthy during the winter months and we
can have the pleasure of seeing you each day at Gregory.

From the Assistant Principal Kim Maloney:

                                        Appreciating the Little Things…

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our office staff here at Gregory. They do such
a fantastic job day in and day out. It is many of the little things, behind the scenes, that make your child
successful each day. These ladies play a huge role in not only our lives, but also your child’s’ success.
Recently, Diane Herbert, Secretary to the Principal, had sent out the Daily Announcements via the
ListServe System. This system provides needed information to our parents once they are signed up to
receive these messages. One of our parents responded back to Diane with terrific news about one of our
Gregory Pioneers! Sam Groetsch has recently been recognized for his upstanding efforts volunteering in
the Naperville community. We are extremely proud of you, Sam! Way to make a positive impact on
your community!

Volunteering in the community is one way to help your child get positively involved in something.
There are many opportunities for both you and your child that give way to a big heart. Some examples,
like donating to a food pantry, stocking shelves at a pantry, working a local soup kitchen and/or
volunteering at a senior facility or hospital are quite rewarding. Check community websites, the local
paper or the community calendar for more opportunities to make a difference for others.

The months of December and January bring about many changes in our middle school children.
The sixth grade students have settled into the middle school environment, the seventh graders-who are
now experts around here, have found new freedoms not known to them prior, and the eighth graders have
now entered their last semester as a middle school student. We have many fantastic opportunities for all
students to become involved in either activities offered at Gregory or through our athletic program. A big
thank you to our winter sport coaches and activity sponsors that make our extra curricular
program such a success! Please feel free to stop in the main office, call us on the telephone or check the
website to find out the upcoming events, activity dates and try-outs taking place.

The next GIG will be here at Gregory on December 12th from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
Tickets will be on sale starting December 8th during all lunch periods. Our last GIG was very well
attended and the students had a blast dancing to a DJ, playing basketball, volleyball, bean bag toss,
playing DDR, watching Monster, Inc. and chowing down on their favorite snacks! We are looking
forward to an evening of fun as we combine the 6th, 7th and 8th grade classes with many of their
favorite teachers!

How many of you have noticed your child talking about his/her favorite teacher or staff member
from Gregory Middle School. We are very fortunate to have many highly-qualified, National Board
Certified, and/or higher-level, degree holding teachers on staff. A huge thank you also goes out to our
teachers and support staff! These individuals enter our building each day with smiling faces and go
above and beyond to assist each student that enters our door on a daily basis. Continue to keep us
informed in regards to all the positive impacts these staff members are making on our students. It is so
easy to take what they do for granted each day! Way to go Gregory staff---you are truly appreciated!

The Gregory PTA would like to thank Nancy Chavis for volunteering as our Indian Prairie Special
Needs Liaison. We are happy to welcome her as our representative for the district Special Needs PTA
meetings.
Our staff appreciation committee treated our school staff to a themed American presidential
luncheon during parent/teacher conferences. The luncheon was organized by Jan Deschaine, Tracey
Mitchell, Kathy Nutt and Julie Pace-Willliamson. Great job ladies!
By now those of you who joined the PTA should have received a school directory. A huge thank
you goes out to Christine Wettlaufer who chaired this project and to Sharda Saina along with our
membership chair, Shirley Jeung. The directory is a priceless tool for communication throughout our
school community. If you would like to join the PTA and receive a directory, please contact Shirley
Jeung at shirleyhe2003@yahoo.com.
Cheryl Howe and Mary Nicholson chair our Reflections program and have done an excellent job
promoting this wonderful creative program. Watch for the names of our Gregory students who advance
to the state level.
Red Ribbon Week was held the last week of October. Our school was decorated by Girl Scout
Troop 1786 led by Jean Donovan and Cheryl Grevenites. Thank you Maureen Smith for chairing this
committee and for the pencils and buttons our kids received at school.
Our first STAR breakfast was held November 13. Chairs, Rhonda McCarthy and Debbie
Morgenthaler organized the special event and had a wonderful representation of our terrific students at
Gregory and their parents.
Carolyn Craig has done a fantastic job as our Parent Diversity Advisory Council (PDAC) chair.
Carolyn is always looking for ways to involve more of our diverse population of Gregory parents in the
PTA. If you would like to be involved with Carolyn’s committee please contact her at
csjcraig@yahoo.com. The PDAC Cultural Arts Fair will be held on December 6 at Crone Middle School.
Check out our Gregory PTA website. It contains valuable information including special offers
members may receive as well as our meeting minutes, agenda and flyers for school functions.
Thank you to everyone involved with PTA. We would not be able to continue to support our
children and staff without your help. Our next PTA meeting is Thursday, December 4 at 9:15 in the
LMC. Please plan to attend.

Student Council Celebrates the Holiday Season

Student Council is working hard to make sure that happy holidays are a possibility for families in
need. Our members sponsored a school-wide food drive to benefit the Humanitarian Service Project
and collected 1339 food items. We recognized every class that finished the suggested donation list with a
small token of our appreciation for their generosity and provided a special breakfast to Miss Beauregard’s
class for finishing the entire list first.
The celebration theme continued for our membership when we held our potluck breakfast and a
movie afternoon. Members brought a dish to share and everyone feasted on the wonderful treats. We also
gathered in the LMC for a viewing of Enchanted and an intermission that included snacks and socializing.
Basketball season is underway at Gregory and Student Council did our part to celebrate our teams
be selling concessions at our Pack the House fundraiser. These fundraisers will continue for the
wrestling team and girl’s basketball. All money raised will go to support favorite charities voted on by
our membership and our own Gregory Grants program to support teachers’ needs and charitable
efforts.
A guest speaker from Kids Matter visited our membership to share information about all of
the volunteer opportunities available to young teens in the Naperville area. Mrs. Wenholdt spoke
enthusiastically about the many fun ways kids can get involved and help others. We will be reviewing the
literature she provided and discussing our options at our next meeting.
Speaking of upcoming events, the Candy Gram Sale will begin at all lunches on December 7th
and continue until we are sold out. This popular fundraiser provides all students will the opportunity to
buy a holiday greeting card for a GMS friend and send it via student council mail. The elves in student
council stuff the cards with candy prior to delivery! The cards are a bargain at 50 cents each and supplies
are limited. In January our membership will travel to the International Ice Arena for a skating party
and dinner.
Student Council membership is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th graders. We generally meet three times
per month on Tuesday mornings and hold events both during and after school. Students interested in
learning more about this club can speak to Mrs. Battle or Miss Scaduto.

At the IPSN meeting held on Nov. 18th we had the senior coordinator from the Naperville Police
Department visit to give an explanation of the Fast Track Program. It is a program that the Police Dept.
and Fast Track Team members communicate with people who have Down Syndrome, Autism or other
special needs. It is an Electronic device to locate missing persons. If any of our families need to learn
more about this program, please contact the Naperville Police department's senior coordinator at 630-420-
6725.

club all about FOOD! Join us in learning all about food preparation. We will be cooking or baking and
eating at every meeting! See Mrs. Bouchard for a permission slip and details! Come and join the fun!

Project Linus Keeps Gregory students in Stitches!

Project Linus is a community service club that meets once per month. Students learn
how to design, piece, construct, quilt, and bind their masterpieces. These quilts then go on to
be distributed throughout the Chicagoland area to sick and needy children.

Come and join us! Our next meeting is January 14th from 3-5p. If you would like to help
support our group we are in much need of 100% cotton fabrics suitable for children, thread,
safety pins, fleece for tie blankets, and snacks. Contact Mrs. Bouchard or Mrs. Connor for
further details 630-428-6300.

Congratulations to the 7th grade Girls’ Volleyball Team on a fantastic season. The double

                                             Seventh Grade Update

Is anyone traveling over the winter break? If you are, the seventh grade geography classes
would love to hear from the students about places they have visited. Any pictures and stories about your
travels can enhance our curriculum and give students a chance to share their knowledge. Having students
keep a journal while on vacation is also a good way to remember your vacation long after it is over.
Speaking of geography, the annual Geography Bee is coming soon. National Geographic
provides materials for the school-level bee and offers the opportunity to our school champ to compete
against others for a state award. Each geography class will send a representative to the school-wide
contest which will be on January 7th from 1:40-3:00.
Since winter break is two weeks long, this would be a wonderful time to encourage
students to grab a great book and read, read, read. No matter what your plans are, we hope everyone has a
safe and enjoyable break.
