WELCOME ….

A welcome is extended to Dr. Jeremy Parfitt who joined as a full-time faculty member in our
department effective July 1. Dr. Parfitt was previously a Pathology resident and fellow.

We also welcome Dr. Subhrojit Sen, Post-doctoral Fellow in Dr. Subrata Chakrabarti’s lab,
UWO.

CONGRATULATIONS ....

We congratulate our Chair/Chief, Dr. Bertha Garcia on her appointment to Vice Dean,
Education in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. This appointment will be from July
1, 2008 to June 30, 2011.

Congratulations are extended to 3 faculty members who received promotions. Dr. Madeleine
Moussa has been promoted to Professor, and Drs. Keith Kwan and Wei-Ping Min to Associate
Professor. Congratulations to all!

RESIDENCY PROGRAM UPDATES ....

We congratulate Dr. Chris Howlett on being awarded the 2008 PSI Foundation Resident
Research Prize. His paper entitled “Use of an elastic stain to demonstrate venous invasion in
colorectal carcinoma-a simple technique for detection of an important prognostic factor” was
selected as one of the winners.

Four of our residents were successful in passing their Royal College exams. Drs. Elena
Tugaleva, Julia Keith-Rokosh, Aaron Haig and Dimitri Koutsogiannis. We congratulate them
all. Dr. Aaron Haig will be doing a fellowship with us.

We extend a warm welcome to our new residents! Drs. Mara Caragea and Iram Siddiqui are
joining us as PGY1s, and Adina Irimies and Sami Siddiqui as PGY2s in Anatomical Pathology.
Dr. Murad Alturkustani (PGY1) has joined as a resident in Neuropathology and Dr. Ladislov
Tomes is doing a fellowship in our department.

Our graduate students, Mansa Krishnamurthy (supervisor Dr. R. Wang), Nelly Hashem
(supervisors Drs. Mark Darling & Tom Daley), and Laura Caria (supervisors Drs. A. Chambers &
A. Tuck) were successful in obtaining their MSc degrees on July 14, July 31, and August 19,
2008 respectively. Congratulations go to all!

We are pleased to announce that the course-based Pathology Assistants Program has received
accreditation from the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences.

Mansa Krishnamurthy (supervisor Dr. Rennian Wang) was presented with the Cameron
Wallace Graduate Student Award in Pathology, recognizing high achievement in both research
and course work. Mansa was also successful in obtaining her MSc degree on June 25.

Congratulations to Katie Moisse. She received the Drs. Madge and Charles Macklin Fellowship.
This is a new award for doctoral students in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry that
recognizes and rewards excellence in both teaching and research.

Dr. Wei-Ping Min was a recipient of the Dean’s Award o Excellence (Team) awarded to the
Multi Organ Transplant Program (LHSC) at the Awards of Excellence 2008, May 29, 2008.

GRANTS ....

Dr. Hao Wang, one of our part-time graduate students has received the Heart and Stroke
Foundation of Canada New Investigator Award. Congratulations Hao!

A research grant was awarded to Drs. Wei-Ping Min and Jim Koropatnick from the Roche
Organ Transplantation Research Foundation for their work on research entitled “Protection of
donor organs in transplantation using siRNA”.

Dr. Subrata Chakrabarti has received funding from the Canadian Diabetes Association for
his research entitled “Pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy” for 1 year.

MISCELLANEOUS ....

We say farewell to Dr. Rosamma George, LHSC, who moved to Mississauga and to Dr.
Mildred Martens, LHSC, as she moves to Vancouver at the end of August. Dr. Biju George,
Chakrabarti lab, UWO has completed his post-doctoral work under the CIHR HOPE
scholarship and is returning to India. Best wishes to all!
