2008 Summer Teacher Conference Exceptional Children Department Offerings At–a-Glance Date/Location/Time June 16-18, 2008 Mariezetta Kerry Child Development Center 8:30-3:30 Course Number/Title/Description 500 Pre-K Early Childhood Conference: Success Begins Here Pre-Kindergarten staff will participate in training designed specifically to prepare them to meet the needs of ELL and special needs students. They will also learn strategies related to the teaching of the Pre-K curriculum. Session topics will include social and emotional development, literacy, assessment, and working with families. 1100 Exceptional Children NC State Policies and Forms Training Why do EC teachers have to do all the things that we are required to do? How do teachers complete state forms? How can I improve compliance to EC regulations? These questions and others will be addressed in the Exceptional Children NC State Policies and Forms Training workshop. 1102 Strategies for Teaching Students with Disabilities Teachers will learn classroom management strategies to support their students with physical limitations. Basic knowledge of most prevalent diagnoses will be reviewed with an emphasis on teamwork and techniques in the areas of physical management, communication, and modification of materials to support educational goals. 1101 Inclusive Practices This course is designed for teams from new schools (opening 2008-2009) and school teams desiring a refresher or individuals who are directly involved in the instructional implementation of Inclusive Practices in school (including Art, PE, Reading, Literacy Facilitator). 1103 Reading Foundations: Teaching Students with Persistent Reading Problems This training is designed to equip elementary general ed. and/or EC teachers with strategies in reading instruction supported by extensive research. Preferably, participants in this training would have previous direct instruction training in either Reading Mastery or Corrective Reading. Participants will be expected to read online text and complete readings and activities to strengthen their skills in teaching students who struggle in reading and spelling. Participants may be asked to collect minimal instructional data at the end of the school year. Participants will be expected to attend three days in June and two days in fall 2008. 1105 All You Ever Wanted to Know About Transition Participants will learn IDEA transition requirements and how they impact the exceptional student, parent, agency and IEP. They will also gain skills for developing a full transition component and an Exit Summary of Performance. They will also gain skills for developing a full transition component and an Exit Summary of Performance. 1109 Elementary SAC/AU Literacy and Science Expand knowledge of SAC teachers and teachers of Autism to teach Extend Content Standards for Science and Literacy. Teachers will learn how to adapt appropriate grade level literature, utilize the story-based lesson checklist, review Science demonstrator activities and develop Science lesson plans. 1107 Effective Instruction in the Co-taught Classroom This course is designed for Special Education and General Education teachers who want to refine coteaching instructional practices. Participants will explore the six co-teaching approaches while integrating positive relationship building skills. 1108 Strategies for Speech Language Therapists This course is designed for speech-language therapists focusing on therapy strategies and response to intervention for speech therapists. 1100 Exceptional Children NC State Policies and Forms Training Why do EC teachers have to do all the things that we are required to do? This session will focus on relevant and practical strategies to assist teachers in adapting the general education classroom to support SAC/AU working on grade level content. Participants will be equipped with tools that can be used on the first day of school and will be able to look at SAC/AU from a different perspective.
