Course Description
Our world-class faculty will systematically review the prenatal diagnosis and clinical
significance of congenital heart disease. Key topics will also include heart development,
fetal cardiac screening, technological advances in 3D/4D ultrasonography, and new
Guidelines for Fetal Echocardiography (American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine
[AIUM], American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists [ACOG], Society for
Maternal-Fetal Medicine [SMFM], and American College of Radiology [ACR]).

An audience response system will promote interactive discussions throughout the course.

Target Audience
This course is designed to meet the needs of physicians and other health care providers
who use sonography for the prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart disease.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:
• List major components of the “basic” and “extended basic” fetal cardiac screening
    examinations.
• Summarize new collaborative guidelines for fetal echocardiography (AIUM, ACOG,
and SMFM) that have also been endorsed by the ACR.
• Understand the main developmental and genetic mechanisms that cause common types
    of congenital heart disease.
• Describe the appropriate use of fetal echocardiography in the prenatal diagnosis of
congenital heart disease, especially as it relates to ductal-dependent lesions.
• Discuss practical approaches for the use of 3- and 4-dimensional sonography as a
complement to conventional diagnostic imaging of common fetal heart abnormalities.
