Toledo, OH, Nov. 1, 2007 – As part of ProMedica Health System’s ongoing commitment to
improving the health of its employees, patients and the community, all ProMedica campuses—in
Ohio and Michigan—will become tobacco-free on Jan. 1, 2008. Smoking and the use of
tobacco products will be prohibited at all ProMedica hospitals and other facilities that it owns,
leases or maintains, including lawns, walkways, sidewalks and parking lots (including inside
vehicles). This supports a nationwide effort by physicians and other health care providers to
ban tobacco products at health care facilities. ProMedica is a strong partner in these local and
national efforts.

“We certainly empathize with how difficult it can be to quit or curb the use of tobacco products,”
says Randy Oostra, president and chief operating officer. “That’s why we are letting everyone
know about our tobacco-free policy well in advance of our Jan. 1 implementation, plus offering
many helpful resources.”

ProMedica has launched a system-wide, tobacco-free campaign throughout its 282 sites to help
with a smooth transition, as well as to offer assistance to smokers and tobacco users, which
includes Quit Lines in Ohio (1-800-QUITNOW/784-8669) and Michigan (1-800-480-QUIT/7848).
ProMedica patients are also being encouraged to talk to their primary care physician about
options that are available to help them quit smoking. Smoking is the single, most preventable
cause of death in the United States, significantly contributing to heart attack, stroke, several
types of cancers, emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

ProMedica annually cares for more than 2.5 million patients in northwest and west central Ohio
and southeast Michigan. As the largest health care system in the region, ProMedica is proud to
be a leader in providing a healthy and safe environment for its patients, visitors and employees.

ProMedica Health System, ranked one of the nation’s most integrated health systems, was formed in
1986 and is a Toledo, Ohio-based, not-for-profit health care organization with 15,000 employees; 70
corporations and joint ventures; 2,900 physicians and more than 282 sites in its 27-county service area in
northwest and west central Ohio and in southeast Michigan. ProMedica treats more than 2.5 million
patients annually and includes 10 hospitals; ProMedica Continuing Care Services with senior,
rehabilitation and integrative services; ProMedica Physician Group, a large network of primary care,
obstetrics, and specialist physicians; Paramount Health Care, the largest HMO in northwest Ohio; and the
Health, Education and Research Corporation, with more than 200 academic relationships. For more
