Master Class with Keith Underwood

Acclaimed flutist and teacher, Keith Underwood, received his Master's Degree from the Yale School of Music in 1976. He has appeared frequently with the New York Chamber Symphony, the Orpheus Ensemble, the Orchestra of St. Luke's and The New York Philharmonic. His solo flutist with the Parnassus and Musical Elements, Jazz Antiqua, the Arcadia Baroque Ensemble, Ufonia and the Riverside Symphony. Renowned as a teacher, Mr. Underwood has worked with flutists from America's major orchestras, including the Cleveland Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. In addition to his annual master class at Hidden Valley, Mr. Underwood has given master classes at such institutions as The Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music and the Eastman School of Music. By now, you should have received via mail or email the 2008‐09 membership brochure and application. We appreciate timely renewals so that we can keep you informed of all of the Flute Society’s happen‐ ings. We are again offering the Studio/Group Membership. For just $75, teachers that have up to 30 students or members of an ensemble such as a flute choir may apply at the studio rate, and all of their students will be Flute Society members! To download a brochure or group membership form, please visit our website www.philaflutesociety.org and click on the link to the membership page. As an incentive to renew early, those who submit their payment by September 30th will be included in a drawing for an autographed Keith Underwood CD! Drawing will be held at the October 11th master class.

ZAWA! Flute Duo
Recital and Masterclass Sunday, November 9th 3 PM Recital, 5 PM Masterclass Rock Hall, Temple University 1715 N. Broad St (Intersection of N. Broad and Cecil B. Moore Ave.) Phila, PA 19122 ZAWA! has been described as "electrifying" and "mesmerizing" in performances across the country. Musical soulmates Jill Felber and Claudia Anderson merged artistic forces in 1997, and offer recently commissioned and traditional duo works with high spirited energy and impact. ZAWA! has appeared at New York's Carnegie Hall, London's Wigmore Hall and many colleges and universities nationwide. Presented in partnership with Temple University, the concert and masterclass will be held on the Temple campus at Rock Hall. One FSGP member will be asked to participate in the masterclass. District Mock Auditions
Sunday, Nov. 23rd, 1-3:30 PM Settlement Music School, Jenkintown The Flute Society of Greater Philadelphia is pleased to once again host this popular event for high school students in grades 9-12 who are preparing for the PMEA Band auditions. This event creates a “mock audition” experience and provides students with copies of the judges’ notes and feedback. This event is a valuable opportunity for anyone who is planning to participate in these auditions and a chance to prepare for the sometimes-nerve-wracking audition process. This year’s PMEA district band auditions are set for December 13th and the audition piece will be The Concerto in G Major by Mozart. Back for the 3rd year in a row is this popular event! Bring your flute and spend an afternoon making music with your friends and colleagues. Explore new pieces and re-discover old favorites from the flute choir repertoire. Everyone is welcome – amateurs, students, professionals & teachers! Marc Adler and Cynthia Folio will once again be conducting at this event. Detailed information will be available on our website in the near future.
Open Member Recital & Party
Saturday, May 9th, 7:30 PM Olivet Covenant Presbyterian Church, 22nd & Mt. Vernon Sts., Philadelphia This is it—the finale to our season! All members are welcome to perform on this recital, no matter your age or ability. This is an opportunity to share a new piece you’ve been working on, or to brush up on an old favorite. Whether you play solo, or with accompaniment, in a duo, trio or ensemble, WE WANT YOU! Teachers or students, or teachers WITH your students, it’s up to you—WE WANT YOU! So, don’t be shy—make this the year you participate! To make this year’s event even more special, we will have the awards presentation and encore performances by our Young Artist Competition winners. As always we will have a reception following the performance to give everyone a chance to socialize and reconnect with old flute friends! Young Artist Competition
Saturday, Feb. 28th, Noon-4 PM Settlement Music School, Jenkintown The Flute Society has added a new event this year to reach out to all of our teachers and their students—a Young Artist Competition! Students between the ages of 12 and 17 may participate in the auditions. The 12-14 year olds will be in the Junior Division, while ages 15-17 will be in the Senior Division. Winners of each age group will be invited to do an encore performance on our FSGP Member’s Recital on May 9th. Awards will be given out at this event for first, second and third place in both divisions. More information on this event along
