Notes From the Board Meeting
• • • • • • • • Our insurance company has paid us $160,000 so far to repair damage from the wildfires. We have applied for a grant to the RB United Coalition for additional slope work. Nine stamped concrete driveways were painted. Escala wall was repaired and painted. Requests made to the City to repair light poles and streets. Bark has been removed from the common area. Replanted beds at entrance to Tretagnier Circle. Conducted monthly walk-throughs with Vitale. Our condolences to the family of Roy Christensen who passed away March 16, 2008. Roy and Mary Jane moved to Eastview in 1994. Roy served on the Patio II Board of Directors from 1998—2000. He was a fixture in Eastview, walking his dog morning and night. He always had a friendly greeting and smile for anyone he encountered. We will miss him.

Friday Night Social
Everyone is invited to attend an informal social at the Community Center on the first and third Friday starting at 5:00 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity to get to know your neighbors in a casual, relaxed setting. It’s strictly BYOB plus bring a snack to share.
Our total annual budget is now $388,000. Landscaping expense represents 75 percent of the budget.
HURRY—FREE AIR CONDITIONING SERVICE
SDG&E has extended an offer for a "free" air conditioning system check up/cleaning and filter replacement for homeowners living in RB and Poway. This offer is available to homeowners that might have their systems clogged with ash and soot from the October firestorms and will expire on March 31. If you are interested, call 1-800-289-2440 to schedule this tune-up. 2
Neighborhood Watch
Now that construction has started to rebuild Eastview homes, please be aware of suspicious activity at construction sites after hours. Some people with less than noble intentions are looking for building supplies to “misappropriate.” Vandalism of automobiles parked on the street is an ongoing problem. Is the stuff in your garage more valuable than your car? Consider a storage unit for the stuff, and park your car in the garage out of harm’s way. Eastview CC&Rs stipulate that the garage should be able to accommodate two cars. For more information or to be included in the Neighborhood Watch program, contact Ann Ross at 618-1892. Listen UP!

It’s Home Inspections Time
Each year approximately 50 of Patio II’s 150 homes receive an exterior inspection to ensure that homes are well maintained. In May and June homes on Rosedown Place, Devereux Road, and Parlange Place will be inspected. Some homeowners think this is a good idea; others don’t. When it’s over, all agree that Eastview is a beautiful place to live and we all take pride in the beauty of our community. Typical items on the inspection team checklist include: • Garage door • Wrought iron fences and gates • Chimneys • Roof • Vegetation, including trees • Paint and stucco • Wood trim • Screens • Front door • Patio Cover This year we will make a note of the proximity of trees to chimney openings. Watch for a notice of when the team will visit. Every effort will be made to accommodate your schedule if you want to be home for the inspection. Paula Taylor (858) 675-7042 3
orget the obvious that stepping in dog droppings can really mess up your morning—not to mention your shoes—pet waste is a health hazard as well. Those little piles of you-know-what eventually get washed into storm drains and from there to San Diego’s creeks, bays, beaches, and ocean. Yuk. This can really ruin a picnic. According to the Environmental Services Department of San Diego, pet waste “contains disease-causing bacteria and parasites that degrade water quality, endanger humans, and impact the health of aquatic life.” So...for the millionth time, please be a considerate neighbor and responsible pet owner. Enjoy your walk with your four-legged friend, but PLEASE pick up after your pet and dispose of waste properly. Your fellow walkers will thank you, your neighbors will thank you, the landscapers will thank you, and Mother Earth will thank you.

Many thanks to Russ and Grace McCalley and Frances Dillard for being gracious hosts at the Patio II Annual Meeting. We appreciate your willingness to help out. Fire Risks in Eastview (and What You Can Do)
Board members met with the Fire Marshall last summer (Before the Fires/ BF) and in January (After Fires/ AF) to assess potential fire hazards. BF the board authorized thinning trees and shrubs, which was completed in September. Vegetation at the bottom of the Escala slope was in an environmentally protected area, and we were prohibited from cutting back or clearing any of that brush. The first three-year cycle of slope and tree trimming has been completed, and will begin again in 2009. With our superb weather, plants grow well and fast so we all have to be aware of maintaining the trees and plants in our own gardens. Keep your plants at least one foot away from your neighbor’s wall, and don’t use decorative bark next to a wall. It can ignite. (It did ignite!) Now...go outside and check your trees and vines to make sure none are within 10 feet of the chimney cap. This is the Fire Code and you may be cited for a violation of that code.

Shake Roofs
We can’t emphasize enough the hazard that shake roofs impose on homes. Experts say the roof is the most vulnerable part of a home because it is exposed to airborne embers. And, according to Fire, Chaparral, and Survival in Southern California by Richard W. Halsey, the embers from a burning roof can ignite neighboring structures. Six of the homes lost had shake roofs. Studies show that during wildfires in Southern California—even with 100 feet of brush clearance—the risk to a home with a wood roof is 21 times greater than for non-wood roofs. Other critical factors to review are overhangs and screening on vents. Teri Denlinger (385-9323) has negotiated a discount for red clay tile “S” style with US Tile on the Eastview Blend for Eastview residents. Call her for details. Be pro-active. Avoid future upheaval in your life. Now is the time to evaluate fire risks to you and your neighbors and remedy the situation. 4
