                    God Is Here!
The hymn by Fred Pratt Green captures so fully what I
value, appreciate, and love about First & Central.
God is here! As we your people meet to offer praise and prayer.
May we find in fuller measure what it is in Christ we share.
Here, as in the world around us, all our varied skills and arts
Wait the coming of the Spirit into open minds and hearts.

 It seems in these days especially that we seek…
 • sanctuary
 • service opportunities
 • sacred space and time

The church continues to strive to be a place of
• welcome,
• increased diversity,
• and a home for all people.
As we grow our “Witness on Market Street,” the health
and vitality of the congregation continues its increase as
well.
While there are turbulent times in the market square, and
surely some of those challenges will find their way into
the church, we are a strong and faithful people and
assuring ourselves always that “God is here,” we shall see
many days together on our journey of discipleship.

                                                                  4

…The days that we gather around Christmas Tea, Pie and
Cake day, Soup and Salad lunches, Pancake breakfasts,
Mardi Gras brunch, Big Baker Bars, Ash Wednesday and
Maundy Thursday suppers – usually just for no reason
other than being together.

…The people who serve “behind the scenes” nearly every
Sunday – folks like
• Herc Pierce, Karl Zipf, and Dick Stell who make sure we
have ushers (Dick also folds and stuffs every bulletin!);
• Herb Bendler who never misses a Sunday and records,
formats, and mails out CD’s of the worship service

                     Hopes
  Over the next few years pledged
  contributions will increase to the point that
   – no more than 4% of total investment assets will
     be used every year to balance the church budget
     (currently 5% of total investment used).
   – the Danby Fund will no longer be used to pay
     unexpected expenses or to help cover any
                                 4-
     shortfall from the targeted 4-5% pull from the
     total investment assets.

                    Reflection
The congregation of F&C has been generous not only
                     year’
in response to this year’s Stewardship Campaign, but
also its strong support of other activities such as the
    – Rhino project,
    – Habitat for Humanity auction,
    – Giving Tree and,
    – Special offerings initiated by the Outreach
      Council.

Besides its financial support, the congregation
graciously gave its gifts and talents to support the
many missions of F&C.
   Thank you very much for your generosity.

House for Andrew's Place (a shelter for older
men) and for the Clothing Bank of Delaware.
Currently, the church pays $53,000 annually
toward that commitment.

                     Goals for 2009:
Continue open discussions with all staff members
and help them set goals, hearing the realities of
their life at First & Central;
Maintain a caring and collegial environment in which
to work;
Set reasonable salary levels, providing an increase if
possible;
Monitor health care coverage;
Meet any other personnel issues as they arise.

                      Reflections:
Providing no increase in salary levels for all staff
members was a very painful decision. The Council
members would like to gratefully acknowledge the
staff’
staff’s willingness to accept the continuation of
their 2008 pay levels as their contribution to the
strength of the church. To a great extent, the
generous attitudes of our staff members model to
us all the graciousness and goodwill we all feel in
our church community.
