University of Wyoming 2008 ASCE Rocky Mountain Regional Conference Colorado School of Mines Golden, Colorado Thursday It seemed like a good idea at the time. – Pick up the vans early and get the trailer hooked up. – Except the vans can’t pull trailers and no one thought of that at motor pool. – Switched the second van to a Ford Exhibition that could pull at trailer. – But when the trailer lights were plugged in, the trailer brakes came on and locked into position. – Send the first van off to get to Registration in Golden – Load the Canoe anyway and Fix the plug later – New adapter at motor pool and on our way!!! Thursday The canoe was completely strapped down and there were no problems…. – Until Cheyenne • As we made the turn off I-80 onto I-25, everything was fine • When we pulled into MickeyDee’s, we had lost the back support and an inner tube. Tighten, Tighten… – Until Wellington • Where we lost the second inner tube. • At this rate, the canoe would be on the deck by Loveland… – Tighten, Tighten… – Actually, we got to Golden with the four remaining tires • Obviously, six were too many!!! Thursday Canstruction – The Theme for Canstruction was “Medieval” – When we didn’t have enough cans for a castle… – A fire breathing dragon worked out nicely. We had about 340 cans, but… BYU had a LOT of cans Thursday It was Ore-Digger Days at CSM and they had a Fireworks display in the Football Field that night. Friday President Tim Palik gave the Chapter Presentation The Canoe Presentation was at the same time as the … Mystery Design which was held at the Lake – “We can’t tell you what it was or else we’ll have to …” Friday Justin Terfehr was UW’s Man of Mystery Mystery Design was a Paper Reinforced Earth Wall. Justin found some clay and they wouldn’t have needed any paper reinforcement. As it was, the wall failed under the construction load. Friday Finally the team came to get the canoe. It passed the Swamp Test with Flying (but soggy) Colors. (Next Year, Sealer!)
