Parent & Toddler Group Initiative Grants for 2008 Funded by the Irish Government under the National Childcare Investment Programme 2006-2010 The Parent and Toddler Group Initiative is a strategic partnership between the Office of the Minister for Children (OMC) and the Katharine Howard Foundation (KHF) under the National Childcare Investment Programme (NCIP) 2006-2010. The primary purpose of the initiative is to provide grants to Parent and Toddler Groups. It is also planned to develop a support and information strategy, in collaboration with the County Childcare Committees, to assist the promotion and expansion of Parent and Toddler Groups. These grants recognise that Parent and Toddler Groups are providing informal support to parents, grandparents and childminders, as well as to young children and are an important source of social contact especially for families new to an area, such as those from other countries. This initiative will also work closely with other agencies and organisations that already provide valuable ongoing support to these groups, such as the national voluntary organisations and the Health Service Executive (HSE), ensuring a collaborative approach. KHF is an independent Irish grant-making Foundation with a particular emphasis on supporting community projects and initiatives in areas that are socially disadvantaged. Within this provision, the Foundation’s particular focus is on projects that provide direct support to children and their families. OMC is the government office which brings together staff from three different government departments (Education & Science, Health & Children, and Justice, Equality & Law Reform), working on early childhood care and education, youth justice, child welfare and protection, children and young people’s participation and research on children and young people. The remit of the OMC includes the implementation of the National Childcare Investment Programme (2006 – 2010) within which funding is available for Parent & Toddler Groups. Grants for Parent & Toddler Groups 2008: Building on the success of 2007 where grants were awarded to 414 groups throughout the country KHF will continue to work closely with County Childcare Committees (CCCs) during 2008. It is anticipated that the grant scheme will be administered directly by the CCCs from 2009 onwards. Information on grants available: Applications for funding under this scheme should only be made by Parent & Toddler Groups that are organised by and involve the participation of parents in the community. Grants will range from €100 to €800. Funding will be available for: Toys, equipment & books Limited funding will be available towards insurance, rent, training or minor refurbishment. Funding will not be available for: • • • • • Groups operating out of private homes One off events such as outings, parties and trips Professional services such as art teachers and Gymborees Groups with €4,000 or more income in 2007 Groups that received KHF funding in 2007 and did not return the progress report. An advisory group will assist KHF in assessing applications and recommending grants. KHF will forward these recommendations to the Office of the Minister for Children where the final decisions will be made. Simple financial records are important for groups in receipt of grants as they offer protection for all involved.
