ASCLME Regional Project Coordination Forum - MAURITIUS, 2-4 OCTOBER 2008
The IRD THETIS / EME research unit
• Evolution of the French/IRD scientific
  background => toward integrated structures
• THETIS is moving into EME : Exploited Marine
  Ecosystems => ecosystemic approach of
  fisheries
• EME = scientific structure associating IRD,
  IFREMER and Montpellier university
• EME has work fields in the Western Indian
Ocean and Benguela Current, in equatorial
Pacific (Peru) and in the Mediterranean Sea

ASCLME Regional Project Coordination Forum - MAURITIUS, 2-4 OCTOBER 2008
The IRD THETIS / EME research unit
within the Indian Ocean
 • In the West Indian Ocean, THETIS is present at La
   Réunion and Seychelles (SFA).
 • THETIS have « historical » partnership within the
   SWIO : Seychelles/SFA ; South Africa/UCT and MCM
   (+ Rhodes University) ; Madagascar / IHSM ; …
 • THETIS is involved in the Regional Tuna Commission
(CTOI : F. Marsac, president of the Scientific Board)
 • THETIS in involved in regional programmes (SWIOFP
/ ASCLME), european programme (MADE) and
   French national ANR programmes (REMIGE,
   BIOPS).

ASCLME Regional Project Coordination Forum - MAURITIUS, 2-4 OCTOBER 2008
 THETIS within SWIOFP and ASCLME
• THETIS is involved within SWIOFP (F. Marsac : French
coordinator for SWIOFP ; P. Bach : French coordinator for
  SWIOFP Theme 4 « large pelagic fishes » + R. Pianet
(IRD/EME) : French coordinator for SWIOFP Theme 1
  « data base »)
• France is « an associated country » for the ASCLME
• THETIS has collaboration projects with ASCLME teams
(participation to Leg 4 of the NANSEN 2008 cruise)
• Due to its scientific goals, THETIS works for close
  collaboration between SWIOFP and ASCLME
• THETIS has regional « capacity building » in SWIO on
pelagic fishes and ecosystems (Seychelles and
  Madagascar)

              The MESOP project

       pelagic resources)

Eddies in the Mozambique Channel:
 physical processes and biological
             productivity

ASCLME Regional Project Coordination Forum - MAURITIUS, 2-4 OCTOBER 2008
          EDDY ACTIVITY WITHIN THE
           MOZAMBIQUE CHANNEL

The ASCLME point of vue (data gap analysis):

• Information needed on the shedding and
  triggering of Mozambique eddies

• Information also needed on productivity

+ Need for ASCLME / SWIOFP shared cruises

ASCLME Regional Project Coordination Forum - MAURITIUS, 2-4 OCTOBER 2008
The scientific questions :

• Mesoscale turbulence appears to be ubiquitous within the world
ocean (here, the eddy kinetic energy)
• Mesoscale processes play a major role in energy transfert toward
biological productivity (vertical flux, retention and concentration)
 Which impact on the whole trophic web, until top predators ?

Channel

                                          Evidence from remote sensing
                                          (sea level anomaly)

=> Are there similar relationships between
mesoscale structures and marine predators ?

Some preliminary information from the ECOTEM program (2002-2004)

Mesoscale activity within the Mozambique
Channel : the MESOP cruise project

                                                 MESOP 2009

MESOP : Mesoscale dynamics influence on pelagic resources
Interest from processes level (physics and primary production) to higher
trophic level (marine top predators, seabirds and marine mammals)

ASCLME Regional Project Coordination Forum - MAURITIUS, 2-4 OCTOBER 2008
Mesoscale activity within the Mozambique
Channel :
MESOP : Mesoscale dynamics influence on pelagic resources

• multi-disciplinary cruises (physics, chemistry, biogeochemistry, biology,
trawling, acoustic) => collaborations
• multi-ship cruises : a research vessel (NANSEN/ANTEA/…) + a longliner
(from La Réunion)
• a multi-partnership project (in South Africa : MCM, Rhodes University)
• a multi-programme project : ASCLME + SWIOFP
• a multi-cruise project (seasonal and interannual variability)

• physics: CTD, ADCP
• biogeochemistry: nutrients, HPLC, POM and stable isotope (Rhodes Univ.)
• acoustics + phyto- and zooplanktown + micronekton (trawl)
• top predator analyses (stomac contents, stable isotopes on tissues)

ASCLME Regional Project Coordination Forum - MAURITIUS, 2-4 OCTOBER 2008
Mesoscale activity within the Mozambique
Channel : the perspectives for MESOP

• A first « MESOP experiment » during the Leg 4 of the
2008 Nansen cruise with the participation of a longliner
from la Réunion (funded by SWIOFP)
• A new cruise in september 2009 onboard the IRD R/V
ANTEA + a longliner in the Mozambique Channel (=>
collaboration with the « ACEP group » ?)
• More attention to the mesoscale and submesoscale
processes : glider, scan fish (LPO, Brest)
• Good opportunities to continue the programme in 2010 if
the R/V ANTEA spent a few months at la Réunion (to be
confirmed in the next few days)

ASCLME Regional Project Coordination Forum - MAURITIUS, 2-4 OCTOBER 2008
Other projects of THETIS in the WIO
• The FP7 MADE program (L. Dagorn, IRD Seychelles) : Mitigating
adverse ecological impacts of open ocean fisheries (to propose
measures to attenuate adverse impact of large pelagic fisheries in
the open ocean => fishing cruises planned onboard longliners and
purse-seiners, in the WIO, in 2009-2010.
• The french ANR BIOPS program (F. Ménard, IRD Sète) :
characterization of the marine pelagic biodiversity in different
ecosystems of the WIO => mainly from historical databases and
data collected by observers onboard longliners and purse-seiners
  (2008-2010)
• The former ANR REMIGE program (data base of biological and
environnemental data collected over the whole WIO).
Complementary observations on seabird communities should be
done from the Europa Island in september 2009.
• Local research actions (Réunion island) on pelagic fishes and
fisheries. Also, some field work opportunities around the Iles
Eparses offered by TAAF (R/V Marion Dufresnes)
