Scholarships - November 10, 2008 Historically Black Colleges & Universities Scholarship Program- Air Force ROTC Scholarship Students receiving an AFROTC scholarship will also receive a nontaxable monthly stipend of $300-$500 and an annual textbook allowance of $900. Students must be US citizens, pass the Air Force Officer Qualification Test, pass the AFROTC physical fitness test, have at least a 2.5 GPA, and have completed at least 12 semester hours of college work by the end of their freshman year. Oglethorpe University- Scholarship Weekend James Edward Oglethorpe Scholarship: Minimum 3.5 GPA, minimum SAT of 1200 combined Critical Reading and Math or a minimum composite ACT of 26, and demonstrate involvement on campus and/or in the community. Students will attend an academic competition on OU’s campus, which includes a mock class session, an essay, and an interview. All competitors receive a minimum 4-year scholarship of $26,000 and an invitation to enroll in the OU Honors Program. Five scholarships will be awarded for full tuition for 4 years valued at $113,000 and a two week study abroad trip. Georgia Shakespeare Scholarship: must commit to performing and understanding Shakespeare, have a minimum 3.3 GPA, and a minimum SAT of 1100 combined Critical Reading and Math or minimum composite ACT of 25. Students will perform a prepared monologue, participate in a seminar on Shakespeare and write an essay based on the seminar discussion. Two scholarships will be awarded for full tuition for 4 years valued at $113,000. Recipients will also have the opportunity to intern with Georgia Shakespeare. Civic Engagement Scholarship: Must demonstrate active involvement in community service and leadership development activities, minimum 3.0 GPA, Minimum SAT of 1100 combined Critical Reading and Math or a minimum composite ACT of 25. Nominees will submit an additional recommendation and 500-word essay detailing their history of service. Finalists are invited on campus to interview in the Center for Civic Engagement. Up to 3 scholarships will be awarded for full tuition for 4 years valued at $113,000, a $3,000 stipend for an internship at a nonprofit organization of the student’s choice and a 10 hour per week volunteer placement in the Center for Civic Engagement. Covenant College- Memphis Wilberforce Scholarship This scholarship is worth $5,000-$15,000 a year. To be eligible, students must live in or attend school in Memphis, have a GPA of 3.0, and a New SAT score of 1650 (or an 1120 considering critical reading and math only) or a 24 on the ACT. They should have evidence of leadership in athletics, student government, church or civic organization, and demonstrate Christian character and commitment in dealing with an obstacle or injustice. Available for students planning to pursue a bachelor’s degree at a public institution within their legal state of residence. Students must be graduating between 12/1/08 and 8/31/09, have a GPA of 2.75, enroll in a public, in-state college or university, pursue a bachelor’s degree, and be a permanent U.S. citizen. The conference offers students the opportunity to attend leadership workshops, interact with other student leaders, and hear nationally acclaimed speakers. The conference is scheduled for Jan. 23-25, 2009 at MUW in Columbus, Mississippi. Students must have a minimum ACT of 18 and have a GPA of 2.5. Students must also provide a recommendation from a school representative and an updated resume that demonstrates leadership ability. Selected students must also pay a $50 fee that covers meal, lodging, and conferencing materials.
