Minutes from December 11, 2008 Bremond SHAC Meeting The meeting was called to order at 6:00PM by Sara Williamson. Members present: Donna Thompson, Rosemary Wilganowski, Sara Williamson, Becky Aaron, MacKenzie Bodiford, Jennifer Coburn, Stan Ortner and Marilynn Wilganowski. Absent members: Margaret Smith, Harold Schroeder, Kathy Wilganowski and Tonya Townsend. A packet of information containing the 8 Focus Areas for a SHAC, Purpose and Role of the SHAC, Texas Law regarding SHAC, and Bremond SHAC Vision Statement were reviewed and discussed by Sara Williamson, School Nurse. All questions new members had were answered. Meeting minutes from the April 2008 meeting were discussed and approved. Results from the April 2008 Health Survey were reviewed. There was open discussion allowing all members to bring to the table any questions or concerns they had regarding health issues within the school district. Topics discussed included: Bullying in PE – we recommend having more supervision in the locker rooms Bullying in PE – we recommend smaller class sizes or additional supervision so the students are more closely monitored SHAC unanimously supports the idea of there being a new elementary gym added to the campus Bullying/Safety issues in the back parking lot – it has been witnessed by several SHAC members that students are using the back parking lot as a place to meet and drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes. There have been several occasions where the parking lot has had beer bottles and other litter left in it requiring the maintenance staff at Bremond ISD to spend their valuable time to clean it up. It is felt by the SHAC that it would benefit the school and students if this type of activity was completely prohibited. The SHAC understands this situation is very complex and isn’t sure that the best solution is but these were some of the possible solutions discussed: o New camera system with better quality images and additional cameras which would allow a larger area of the campus to be monitored o Hold a meeting with local law enforcement and notify them of what has been going on to see if they can increase patrols on school property especially on the weekends o Hire school security for weekends and/or game nights Bullying - Recommend a Bullying Survey be sent to parents and students, one that would better identify where and when bullying is taking place on campus and also identify the age group that is most affected by it. Dr Thompson said she will contact Region 6 to request a copy of the Bullying Survey they have used in the past. We would like to send one out possibly with the next report cards.
Cafeteria – several questions were brought up regarding the cafeteria. Since Margaret Smith was not present at the meeting, I agreed to gather the questions and discuss them with her then relay the information back to the SHAC: o What can be done about portion size? Some students say they don’t get enough to eat. o Can we increase the number of fresh fruits and vegetables offered on our menu? o Can there be a 2nd option offered to students who do not like what is being served as the main course that day – possibly offer them a cold cut sandwich? o For lunch detention, can the students be provided with a cold cut sandwich instead of peanut butter? Students who need glasses but don’t have anyway to pay for them: o There is a Lyons Club in the Bremond/ Franklin area and we need to make contact with them to see if they would be willing to assist some of the students who are in need. We would really like for this NOT to be an issue for our students. Random Drug Checks: o The SHAC is aware that drug dogs come into the school periodically to check the students’ lockers and hallways as well as the parking lot for drugs. SHAC members want to know if there can also be random checks of the classrooms and students’ belongings. I will present these questions to Mr. Schroeder and get back with the committee. Concerns were voiced regarding the amount of underage drinking that is going on in this community. What type of education are the kids receiving? Is there any supplemental education the can be done? I will present these questions to the Health Teacher, Ms. Watson, and get back with the committee.
The counsel would like to go before the School Board to introduce new member as well as discuss some of our concerns. We will try to get on the agenda for the next school board meeting. Next meeting will be held in January or February. Meeting was adjourned at 7:00
