As Instructional Technologist for the campus, she will be working with faculty to help them transition from WebCT to Sakai through workshops, demonstrations, and one on one instruction. B. Report from Committee Exploring Retired Faculty Issues: Senators Shurbutt, Horner, Tuttle, Best President Shurbutt reported that the committee is exploring ways to engage retired faculty and staff. Senator Tuttle suggested that the last lecture idea be explored for retiring faculty, and the idea was discussed about interfacing this honor with the McMurran awards ceremony. Motion (M/S/P—Best/Jacobs—Unanimously) Senate suspend the agenda in order to have Dr. Warburton speak. C. Calendar Issue: Senator Best and Dr. Warburton Senator Best introduced Dr. Robert Warburton, Director of Academic Advisement, who spoke on the new calendar and its effects on the general studies sections. Since the Faculty Senate and Student Government had voted in favor while the Classified Staff voted against, he reported the following: 1. The proposed calendar will remove one period per day 2. This will, as I see it, impact the General Studies course offerings, especially on M/W and M/W/F 3. In an analysis of the Fall 2008 General Studies Course offerings set as though the proposed calendar was in place, I found that there would be a loss of 15 sections out of 148 sections. 4. The loss of 15 sections would constitute, conservatively at 20 seats per section, 300 seats. 5. The Admissions Office and VP for Enrollment have projected an increased enrollment (across transfer/readmit & first year students) of between 5 and 10%. Based on this analysis, Shepherd will need more and larger sections for general studies for the Fall not fewer. After conferring with Registrar Seffers, the calendar for 2008-2009 will be the old model, but action must be taken to deal with general studies courses. Motion (M/S—Thatcher/Gaberson) Faculty Senate should reverse its position of support for the new calendar. Several senators said that they needed departmental input. Vice President Stern reminded senators that the 2009-2011 Catalog goes into production next year,
and this issue must be solved. Stern also said that enlarging classes is not what Shepherd is. Motion (M/S/P—Best/Berenschot—16 yeas, 1 nay) Senate postpone a vote on the calendar until the second Senate meeting in fall 2008. Stern suggested that Dr. Warburton send out a summary memo on the calendar concern and general studies. D. Faculty and Staff Fee Structure for Wellness and Fitness Center: Senator Jacobs reported that he had spoken with Dr. Virginia Hicks and the student representative on the Wellness Center Committee. There will be a meeting April 22nd of this committee. After much discussion about the proposed fee structure and who make the decision on amounts charged, the role of Auxiliary Services, and who approves the fees, and are the fees based on bonding for the facility , the members of the Senate felt they needed more information before recommending any action.
