President’s Message
For those that haven’t heard, USDAA has granted our club and Front Range Agility Club permission to host the inaugural Rocky Mountain Regional here in Denver. It will be at the Adams County Regional Park in Brighton and will consist of three days and three rings. This regional will field additional semifinalists and finalists for Grand Prix and Performance National Standard as well as semifinalists for Steeplechase in addition to providing another qualifier for Speed Jumping and Team/Versatility Pairs. Again, we are counting on our club to help us pull this together. We will need many additional volunteers to make this a success. We will be paying all-day workers $25 in FRAT coupons and $25 in FRAC coupons per day. Otherwise, bring your dogs in order to have a chance to compete with world-class handlers. Jamie Horacek

March 12, 2008 FRAT Meeting Minutes Submitted by Michele Janowiak Attendees: Red Johnson, Beth Godwin, Mardee Kayser, Sandy Trzos, Gayle Gitlin, Carol Aikin, Bob Aikin, Bonny Rogerson, Pete Rogerson, Amy D. Galperin, Tom Radinsky, Tracy Lorraine Smith, Shar Henry, David Lynch, Norm Lende, Brianna Atherton, Michele Janowiak. The meeting was called to order by Vice President, Red Johnson, at 7:00 p.m. Secretary’s Report - Two corrections were made to the Minutes of February 13, 2008. One was to correct the Seminar giver to Gerry Brown from Jerry Brown. The other correction was to change the name of the Masters Judge in USDAA to Paul Stolzenburg from Paul Stolzenberg. Moved by Amy Galperin and seconded by Pete Rogerson to approve the minutes as corrected. Passed. Treasurer’s Report – Brianna reported that the February CKC trial made approximately $9,000.00. CKC needs to give us a formal bill in order to close the books on the trial. Brianna suggested a one-time bonus donation to the Great Dane Rescue group after the final numbers are in. This will be in New Business for our April Meeting. Our March 2008 AKC trial made approximately $1,000.00 less than our March 2007 trial. This mostly due to increased fees from AKC. A CD is coming due next month and we need to decide which bank to use. The 1st Bank charged us usage fees deemed excessive you Jamie Horacek and Brianna for checks being deposited and written. We will discuss this next month. Feb 15-18 CKC/FRAAD AKC – Overall the trial went extremely well and we were complemented by the AKC Reps that were present. The Great Dane Rescue group and the Conifer Cheerleaders provided valuable support in all aspects of the trial. Self-serve ribbons and gate sheets proved to be a great idea. Suggestions for future trials included having less tables and more chairs. Future load leveling on the judge’s schedules would allow them to create and judge their own courses. There were issues with vendors where one vendor paid money to CKC for a specified site instead of donating gift certificates for the volunteer raffles. Many did not know there were vendors upstairs in the arena. There was much discussion about people moving their dogs within classes without a legitimate conflict in running a course or walking one. In summary, noting the conflict on the gate sheet was acceptable but actually moving the dogs within the class should only be done by the Gate Stewards to accommodate legitimate conflicts. Set-up went well on Wednesday although there were people setting up crates who did not help with set-up. Crating in the Paddock area was more than adequate. There is still a problem with people setting up their area with room for ten more of their friends. Future suggestions included having some run-throughs on Wednesday night for CKC and FRAT members only, more control over the vendors and parking, and control over charging for people to attend and watch the Agility runs. There was discussion about having FRAAD manage the CKC trial again next year. Shar Henry moved that FRAAD manage the CKC trial in 2009 provided the money

works out to our satisfaction and that CKC formally asks us to do so. Seconded by Norm Lende. Passed unanimously. March 7-9 AKC – The trial received many compliments about the judges and courses. Annette Miller is now a provisional Excellent judge after her work with us. Having FAST first worked out well. Recommendation for next year was to have 330 in Standard, 330 in JWW and 170 in FAST for a total of 750 per day for the trial. This would be in two rings inside. We owe Douglas County for the number of entries. They charge $1.00/dog for the weekend. Red will get this to them. We pay the 4-H group $250.00 to clean the stands, etc. This is c/o Douglas County. We also pay Douglas County for the number of RVs/night when they use power. There was considerable discussion about RVs and Douglas County. Since there is very little RV parking, there was a random draw for the spots available. Two RVs arrived Thursday night before Douglas County expected them and had to move. A letter of apology will be written by Bonnie Rogerson to the Douglas County representative. An e-mail was received by Shar Henry regarding unattended dogs in the stands. This represents a liability for the club and will be clarified to all for future trials. June 7-8 NADAC – Culinary Wave will be the caterer. Gifts for the judges are ready. The premium will be out before the end of March. Chief Course Builders and Chief Scorekeeper have been found. All is ready to go. July 4-6 USDAA – The USDAA trial hosted by FRAT/FRAC will be the Rocky Mountain Regional for this year only. There will be 3 rings. One more judge is needed. Jamie Horacek is working on the schedule. A concession/food vendor will be needed but cannot be put on the actual show grounds. They can be close by in the parking lot for the Fairgrounds. August 16-17 NADAC – Culinary Wave will be used as the caterer. It will be at deKoevend Park in Englewood. We still need a Chief Scorekeeper and 2 Chief Course Builders. September 27-29 AKC – The Great Dane Rescue group will be coming to work the FAST ring outside at Douglas County October 17-19 Jeffco – As noted before, this has been released to the Terrier Club for one time only in 2008 in order for them to have an AKC Agility trial. January 2-4, 2009 USDAA – Judges are Paul Stolzenburg from Barrington, NH as the Master’s Judge and Eric Quirouet from Warren, MI as the Advanced Judge. Shar Henry has the contract for Douglas County to set-up on Thursday night, January 1st, and for use through Sunday, January 4th. The Trial Committee is Trial Chair – Carol Aikin, Trial Secretary – Diane DuBose, Chief Score Table – Jamie Horacek and Brianna Atherton, Chief Ring Stewards – Judy Stone and Sandy Mullis, Chief Course Builders – Bob Aikin and ??, Hospitality – Shar Henry and Norm Lende. ONE MORE CHIEF COURSE BUILDER IS NEEDED. Carol is working on the schedule with advice from Julia Hunt. There will be 3 Starters/PI and Advanced/PII tests offered each day. Paul will judge one of the Starter/PI Standard Classes on Friday and one of the Advanced/PII Standard

Classes. This way, competitors in those classes will have an opportunity to have a total of three standard classes under two different judges if they enter all three days. February 2009 Seminar – Diane DuBose reported that Gerry Brown is coming. As a second seminar giver, Rachel Saunders is not available. Diane is still looking for another person. Joanne McDermott will co-chair the Seminar with Diane. Gayle Gitlin is doing hospitality. May 29-31, 2009 Judges Seminar – Nothing new to report. March-June, 2009 Schedule Discussion – There was extensive discussion and input from all present regarding our 2009 schedule and potential changes. The results were: Jan 1-4, 2009 USDAA Dougco Feb 6-9, 2009 Seminar Jeffco Feb 13-16, 2009 CKC-AKC NWSS Mar 6-8, 2009 AKC Dougco Terrier Club. See motion below. May, 2009 NADAC or DOCNA deKoevend or other Park May 29-31, 2009 Judges Seminar Jeffco Jun 5-7, 2009 AKC Dougco Jul 2-5, 2009 USDAA Adams County With FRAC. Aug 15-16, 2009 NADAC or DOCNA deKoevend or other Park Sep 25-27, 2009 AKC Dougco Oct 16-18, 2009 Fun Match Jeffco Notes: For June 7-8, 2008, we owe Jeffco $137.50 even though we will not be using it. The Terrier Club want our March 2009 dates to use for an All Breed AKC Agility Trial. Tracy Smith moved that the March 2009 dates be given to the Terrier Club for an all breed dog agility trial, provided the dates are given back to us if they don’t want to do a trial again. Seconded by Shar Henry. Bob Aikin noted that we should do this AFTER we hear from CKC regarding our offer to do the February trial again. 14 – Yes, 1 – No, 1 - Abstention. Motion Passed. DOCNA Discussion – Red Johnson noted that very few club members were involved in the planning and running of our NADAC trials. Major positions are filled by non-FRAT members. She suggested dropping to one NADAC trial a year and doing a DOCNA trial once a year. Support from those present was forthcoming. Tracy Smith volunteered to be Chief Course Builder and Amy Galperin volunteered to be Chief Ring Steward for a DOCNA trial. Red said she would research costs of dropping the August 16-17, 2008 NADAC trial and the cost of doing a DOCNA one instead. New Business – A motion was made by Amy Galperin, Seconded by Pete Rogerson, to increase the Worker Vouchers from $5.00 to $7.00 to be used for lunch or future entries. It was noted that vendors need to write the amount on the vouchers that people are actually using. Motion passed unanimously. Shar Henry reported that the FRAT Yahoo group membership has been updated. David Lynch was introduced as a guest. He does not currently run a dog. Bob Aikin moved to adjourn the meeting at 9:10 P.M., seconded by Bonny Rogerson. Motion passed unanimously.

Dana Pike Puppy Seminar
Day 2- Seminar notes taken by Tracy Smith Foundation training is #1 building relationship, checking in with you, focus on you, and having slack in the leash. Starting one jump training- Dana starts young dogs with lots of free shaping, way before there is a jump in the picture, the dog should be coming to your side (this also helps with training contacts). To teach the coming in to side, use the “start line stay” that was taught the first day (see previous article). Release the dog to you, and as they come in, pivot 90 degrees, step forward one step to line them up, and reward. Your leg should be pointing the direction you will be going, this will become a cue for the dog. This should be done in two steps at the beginning- release/call the dog to your leg (this is not a formal come), THEN do the pivot and step forward. The dog should be parallel to you, facing the same direction when you stop. They should also never go past the plane of your hand/arm, they should be coming to your hand. One jump training- use WINGLESS jump, even with older dogs. Of course, with puppies, there is no bar on the jump, you are just teaching the motions, not jumping. Start with your dog on your side (jump side), step toward the jump, motion for dog to take the jump (at this point you can be close enough to lure dog over jump if needed), click and treat. As the dog becomes more proficient, you move further away from the jump, teaching them it’s OK to go away from you, and return. No rewards for back jumping, the dog always gets it’s reward OUTSIDE of the jump standards. Add a nose touch or other action so the dog learns they can EARN the jump by doing something else. Move “around the clock” at the jump so dog learns to do it no matter where you are. The objective is to get the dog to want to go to the jump, and to understand going around the standard. You move around the clock, and then also the dog should move around the clock (just one of you at a time though, just vary one thing when training). Still reinforce for coming into your side in the correct position too. This helps them get on their rear. Once you are both proficient no matter where you are, then add your start line stay game. When your dog is moving around the clock, you can be stationary by one of the standards, about an arm’s length away. Use free shaping, and always work both sides of the jump with every exercise.
5 - 4/16/09
Toy rules- you control the toy and access to it. The dog earns it’s rewards through you. Rear cross with one jump- First, don’t introduce a rear cross until you have the dog going ahead of you (away from you) over the jump. Once they have a go ahead, you can use bait in your hands to teach the maneuver- first send the dog over the jump, then switch hands to bring the dog around to you. Dana really likes the one jump training and thinks you can teach most handling maneuvers with it.
