UVic Business Backgrounder: Programs at a Glance Master of Business Administration (MBA) Program In the 12 years since it was created, the UVic MBA program has established a strong national and international reputation for first-rate graduate-level business education. Its pioneering Integrative Management Exercises (IMEs), Management Consulting Projects, and Mentor Program are features that have been adopted in other MBA programs across Canada and beyond. It offers full-time and part-time programs. Both begin with the innovative four-week Essentials of Business and Leadership module, followed by courses in all the core areas of business. Academic content is supplemented throughout the program by a professional development course that includes guest speakers, executive mentors, co-op and career preparation, and workshops on topics such as networking, team-building, ethics, research and analysis, and cross-cultural management. Students complete three IMEs (one overseas) and a major real-world consulting project, and may also do a co-op work term and/or an international exchange. For their specialization module, students may choose from among international business, service management, and entrepreneurship; or they may participate in a Global MBA. Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) Program The UVic BCom program’s mission is to give students the knowledge and skills they need to be effective and successful managers—at home or anywhere in the world. The program is designed to match classroom theory with practical experience. The practical side is emphasized through case- based instruction, real world group projects, business skills training, and a mandatory co-operative education program. Students develop a global perspective through core courses in international business, unparalleled international exchange opportunities, and a multi-national student body. The program is delivered via a cohort-based “2+2” structure in which students complete their general/ preparatory courses during the first two years of their undergraduate education, and then spend their final two years entirely within the BCom program. Co-operative Education and Career Programs The Business Co-op and Career Centre provides co-operative education and career services for all UVic Business undergraduate and graduate business students. The co-op program is central to the experiential element of a UVic Business education and provides opportunities for students to engage in four- or eight-month, paid co-op work terms, which alternate with academic semesters. Co-op jobs help students develop practical skills and apply what they learn in class to the workplace. In turn, the real-world experience students bring back from their co-op jobs enriches the classroom. Co-op also gives students and employers a chance to know one another, and often leads to longerterm employment. Around one-fifth of students undertake an international co-op, through co-op exchange agreements with an international university. In addition to the co-op program, the Business Co-op and Career Centre runs extensive workshops on job-finding and other career-related skills. They participate in career fairs, hold mock interview clinics, and host information sessions and interviews by employers. The Centre develops and posts hundreds of career job opportunities for graduating students and alumni each year. By combining BCom and MBA co-op and career services, it offers “one-stop shopping” for employers recruiting either co-op students or long-term career employees.
