YOUTH GYMNASTICS
This classes emphasize basic skills, developing strength, flexibility, and self-confidence. There is an eight to
one student to teacher ratio. This class meets once a week for 60 minutes for eight weeks. Participants
receive gymnastics instruction on all Olympic events and the trampoline.

LEARN ABOUT BIRDS WITH MRS. MACDOUGALL
In this program, we will study birds of prey, birds in your backyard and birds that live far away. Come share

T-BALL CLINIC
Is your child interested in learning the basic skills to baseball/softball? Well, here’s your chance! Instructor
and longtime Summer Playground Leader – Eric “Wokkus” Aldrich will be returning for his fourth summer to
once again coordinate a youth t-ball clinic to run on Saturdays in July & August. This six week clinic will
cover the basics of t-ball in a non-competitive environment. This program is geared towards children not yet
in Kindergarten. Each participant will receive a clinic t-shirt. Participants must have their own glove. All other
supplies will be provided.

HORNETS’ AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM - SPRING 2009
The Hornets’ After School program offers a safe, supportive alternative between school and home for
children in grades K - 6. Daily activities include outdoor play, sports & games, arts & crafts, homework time,
field trips, a daily snack and much more. Parents have the option of sending their child between 1 - 5 days
per week. Tuition is paid on a monthly basis on the first of each month. Program operates Mondays -
Fridays from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. and follows the Regional School District schedule and includes free
participation in all Early Release Day activities. A 10% sibling discount is also offered. Program is led by
Heather Snider-DePriest.

Hornets After School Program runs Monday - Friday from 3:00 -6:00 p.m. and follows the School District

KNOW ATOM SCIENCE CELLS TO SKYSCRAPERS
Discover and investigate many unusual areas of science through this course. This program is a
combination of classroom discussion and hands-on learning that helps students discover what areas of
science they enjoy and are interested in learning more about. Each week we will create and discuss one of
the following: Cells, Prisms, DNA, Kaleidoscopes, Flight, Weather Stations, Polymers and Skyscrapers!
Students will have the opportunity to bring their projects home each week to keep for their own science
collection. There will be no class on 6/4/09. This class will run for 6 weeks.

MANNERS FOR ELEMENTARY STUDENTS
Founder of The Common Courtesy and certified etiquette consultant, Joan Viebranz Lockwood, provides a
lively and interactive environment while teaching students the skills needed to interact appropriately with
adults and peers. Food is served at each class so children have a “hands-on” learning experience at a
dining table. Topics include: proper greetings and introductions, formal dining skills, thank you notes and
telephone etiquette. The importance of empathy, kindness and respect toward others is emphasized
throughout the entire session. Our final class is a four course meal where the children will have the
opportunity to combine all of the skills they learned during previous classes. Students who complete the
course will be awarded a Certificate of Completion. Parents will be given materials with all of the course
topics so they have the opportunity to continue working with children at home.

GET FIT KIDS
Youth fitness is a real concern these days, especially with childhood obesity reaching record levels. We
are all concerned about our children’s health and want to see them excel in various sports. This fun, high
energy program introduces kids to drills, plyometrics, hurdles, track and cross country training and other
activities to help them get in great running shape. Coached by Mike Toomey, Certified USATF coach, with
over 15 years of experience coaching all levels of athletes. Groups will be split up by age.

Come join the fun this April vacation! Heather Snider-DePriest has asked a few Summer Playground Staff
to help to keep your kids busy during the school vacation week. The camp will be run at the Memorial
School from Tuesday April 21st to Friday April 24th from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. The program will offer gym
games, outdoor time, art projects, movies, and lunch each day! You can sign up for one day or get a
discount and sign up for all four days. Come have some fun with us!

SPRING TENNIS CLASSES
The Manchester Parks & Recreation Department will be once again offering tennis lessons this spring for
children! These classes are geared towards both the new and experienced tennis players. All lessons are
held at the Brook Street Tennis Courts and will be led by Tennis Director Angela Palma. Classes meet 1x
per week for 7 weeks. There will be a 6:1 student/instructor ratio. (No class 5/25).

INTRO TO KAYAKING
The Sea Kayak Adventure Program is ERBA's annual kayaking program for kids. Boys and girls ages 9 -
15 meet daily over the course of a week learning the sport of sea kayaking. We will begin on the quiet tidal
estuaries of the Essex River Basin and nearby Chebacco Lake. As the students become comfortable in
their kayaks, we progress towards a variety of kayaking skills such as wet exits, rescue techniques,
paddling strokes, seamanship, and safety on the water. In-water games are also played to develop the
paddler's self-confidence. As their paddling skills develop, longer, more challenging trips are planned.
Price includes kayak instruction, staffing and transportation to and from Manchester. Transportation departs
from behind Manchester Town Hall.

SPORTS CONDITIONING FOR MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES
This fun, high energy program introduces kids of all ages to drills, plyometrics, relays and various running
events. This is a great way for young kids to get in shape in a safe atmosphere. The main emphasis is to
teach young athletes proper running techniques which will set them up for a life time of healthy running.
Participants will learn the fundamentals of running, including cross country and track and field. For high
school athletes, this program will be ideal for anyone getting ready to compete during the fall season in
cross country, soccer, etc. This program will focus on getting those athletes ready and in shape for day 1 of
the high school season. Both groups will meet twice a week for group workouts and receive recommended
training schedules for the length of the programs. The weekly workouts will include running, stretching, core
work, drills, circuits, and more. Coached by Mike Toomey, a USA certified Track and Field coach, who is
currently the head boys and girls coach at Lynn English High School. This program runs for 5 weeks.

BABYSITTERS TRAINING
The Babysitter’s Training course will give participants the safety skills and confidence necessary to be a
great babysitter. The participants will learn what to expect from parents and learn the skills needed to
handle any real-life babysitting situation. The course is designed for youths 11-15 years old and takes place
in a fun, interactive environment. The youths will learn many skills including how to handle an emergency,
perform first aid and interview for a babysitting job. They will also learn basic care routines like diapering,
feeding and dressing infants and children.

SUNDAY SKATEBOARDING CLINICS
Back by popular demand for the 6th year, Dylan Press returns to teach you how to properly do the following
skills and tricks: Pushing, Ollies, Drop-ins, Boardslides, Shuvits, Kickflips, and Drops! Open to beginner and
intermediate boarders ages 6-12. Participants must have helmet and elbow pads to participate. Please
bring your own board and a water bottle.

LEGO® ROBOTICS WORKSHOP
Explore the world of robotics using the new LEGO Mindstorms NXT and classic RCX version. Build robots
with sensors and motors to explore the environment and perform tasks. Test out your robots through
activities and interaction with other students in the class. You'll also learn how to program your bots with
software that lets you create instructions you desire. Dozens of new projects are available for returning
participants

The US Sports Institute offers a great way to introduce children aged 3 to 5 to the sports of soccer,
basketball, softball, hockey and lacrosse. Sessions take place in a safe structured environment and sports

fun, fun. No previous experience is required in any of the sports to participate. All the sports promote hand-
eye co-ordination, motor skills, group participation and communication skills.

MOMMY & ME GYMNASTICS
This program meets one time per week for 45 minutes for eight weeks. Toddlers and their mothers run
through a series of activities designed to stimulate, educate and improve socialization. This class uses
music, child-sized equipment, and finger play to help the children develop physical, verbal, and social skills.

TUMBLING STARS GYMNASTICS

gymnastics class meets once a week for 45 minutes for eight weeks. We maintain a six to one student to
teacher ratio.

EXPRESS YOURSELF ARTS & CRAFTS!
Do your kids love to do art projects? Do your kids love to be creative with all sorts of materials? Well we
thought so! Come join the fun with our own in house artist, Dee Dee Warren. This class will explore your
child’s inner Van Gogh at there own pace. Dee Dee will have one structured art project planned per class
and the rest of the time will be your kids time to express him/her self. If you like to build structures with
Popsicle sticks and hot glue guns, water color, use stickers, bead jewelry and much more, then this class is
for you.

Kindergarten Busy Bees is a program designed to meet the needs of Memorial School kindergartners and
there families on Wednesdays when school is dismissed at 12:45 pm. Heather Snider DePriest and Dee Dee
Warren will entertain your children in the Music Room at the Memorial School with fun games, music, art
projects and much, much more. The program will run every Wednesday following the school calendar year.
