Goals:

 1. What specific goals do you expect to accomplish for the upcoming month?

 Finalize the logistics for nationals

 Creating a OGSMR for the chapter

 Constructing a way of having CEB elections before Nationals and having some form of a transition

process for new eboard members.

 Developing CEB email addresses

Strategies:

 1. This is the portion where you place your ideas on how you will accomplish the

goals you set for yourself up above

 1. Reserve hotel rooms, decide on transportation, figure out funding

 2. Each member of the board will fill out a OGSMR for their position with current and Long run

goals

®

National Society of Black Engineers

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

 3. I will start with having a CEB shadow program where interested members will actually begin

to do the duties of their chosen CEB member. Thus they will get idea of the amount of work that

person does or is expected to do. I will leave it up to the CEB to choose his or her shadow, unless

someone volunteers.

 4. I currently have a Netscape email address for all NSBE presidential matters. The REB using

yahoo. No matter what the case many CEB members find that their school email boxes are

inundated with email that is NSBE related.

 2. Be sure that your strategies are measurable; you want to have something to prove

you accomplished it

 1.1 reserve hotel rooms by the end of finals and send out funding proposals

 2.1 If I will received 9/11 OGSMR from the positions on the board

 3.1 If at least one person ones for every position without having to be written in I will consider the

shadow initiative successful.

 4.1 Have emails account setup for the Spring semester and remain active for there on out

Accomplishments:

 1. Here is where you spill the beans on everything you were able to complete last

month include every task completed

 1.1.1.hotel rooms have been booked and some College of Engineering funding proposals sent out

 2.1.1 ALL OGSMR have been submitted except for the treasurer report

Works in Progress:

 1. What activities are you currently planning?

 2. What goals from the previous month were not accomplished?

There was nothing left undone from last month.

 3. List reasons for not accomplishing goals or ―tweak‖ the goal to be more reachable

N/A

 1. Finishing up the logistics for Nationals. Hotels have been reserved, just working on raising more

money and getting transportation

 1.2. Constructing a way of having CEB elections before Nationals and having some form of a

transition process for new CEB members.

 1.3 Constructing a way of having CEB elections before Nationals and having some form of a

transition process for new CEB members.

 1.4 Developing CEB email addresses

 2. The OGSMR was not fully completed. However, I am satisfied with that amount that did get

accomplished given the difficulty of developing a solid OGSMR.

o Not completed because all reports have not been submitted yet

Questions/Comments/Concerns/academic commitments:

 1. Would you like to ask something specific?

 2. Are there any academic commitments (i.e. exams, review sessions, tutorials, etc.)

that you have over the next two weeks, list.

 Finals week

Goals:

 Trying to find an improved way to have exec board review minutes and save paper at

the same time

 Fix up display case in Engineering Hall

 Company contact database

 Put the information learned at FRC into effect

 Thank you letters to companies for presenting and donating to our organization

 Work with Melissa on GBM’s for this month being that it is Academic Excellence

Month

 Plan for January GBM with ATK Thiokol

 Study for ATB for FRC

 Work on Holiday greeting cards for NSBE sponsors, alum, and membership with the

publicity committee

 I plan to better serve my senator position next semester

Strategies:

 Will email board to let them know that the minutes have been posted to web then

have them approve the minutes at the exec meeting or present errors

 Staple the pictures and info in display case

 Put company contacts on excel sheet and put on web

 Type thank you letters and mail to companies

 Communicate with Melissa on ways to help her with the meetings for the month, ie

needs and plans for the meetings.

 Maintain communication with the ATK contact; determine the specifics of the

upcoming meeting.

 Review ATB and FE exam materials

 Determine objectives of the cards; who to send them to, the design, ordering

specifics, assign tasks among the publicity committee.

®

National Society of Black Engineers

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

 Create a Senator calendar that will incorporate all of the duties and deadlines of

Senators.

Accomplishments:

 Typed up minutes bimonthly and sent to exec board

 Typed thank you letter to NSBE headquarters for donation

 The specific needs and details for Melissa’s Nov GBM’s were met; food, room,

equipment. Though the content of both meetings was poorly presented.

 Determined a date for the ATK meeting. Reserved a room and necessary equipment.

Will be inviting the Float N Illini and ordering food at a later date.

 Studied for ATB but the team did not place. Maybe next year.

 Decided on 4 designs for the holiday cards. In the process of compiling the mailing

list.

 Senators helped with High school visitation

Works in Progress:

 Survey for the beginning of next semester to see how the general body felt about how

the exec board functioned, what they felt about NSBE and what we need to improve

o

 Did not finish contact database or resumes

 Composing a final newsletter for the semester.

 Aiming to have the greeting cards ordered by last day of the semester.

 Organizing committee conference call for pub committee.

 Didn’t complete the society of the month application for November but will for this

month.

Questions/Comments/Concerns/academic commitments:

 Finals time is here and the semester is closing so time is limited to do anything

besides academics

 Finals are approaching so everything not completed by reading day will probably be

postponed

 Physics 100 final, 242 hours exam, and 225 hour exam, as well as afro presentation

this week. Next week I have finals as well as everyone

Goals:

 1. What specific goals do you expect to accomplish for the upcoming month?

 Sending out ―Thank You‖ cards to organizations who gave us money and people who gave

workshops at High School Visitation.

Strategies:

 1. This is the portion where you place your ideas on how you will accomplish the

goals you set for yourself up above

 2. Be sure that your strategies are measurable; you want to have something to prove

you accomplished it

 The Public Relations Chair will also be contacted when the Thank You cards will be sent out since

she has a committee that can design the cards and mail them so she can have a comprehensive list of

which companies are supporting us.

Accomplishments:

 1. Here is where you spill the beans on everything you were able to complete last

month include every task completed

 High School Visitation was very successful with 35 students in attendance and 18 chapter members

assisting.

 From the Funding Requests sent, Shell, Engineering Council and AmerenIP have sent checks for the

money requested. AmerenIP $1,000; EC $750.00; Shell full amounted requested

Works in Progress:

 1. What activities are you currently planning?

 2. What goals from the previous month were not accomplished?

 3. List reasons for not accomplishing goals or ―tweak‖ the goal to be more reachable

 I am currently planning to set up visitations to high schools to talk about NSBE Jr.

 Making follow up phone calls to the students who attended the visitation since most of them

expressed a lot of interest in a lot of the summer programs has not been accomplished.

 This goal was not accomplished since I have not had time to call all the students who attended the

visitation.

Questions/Comments/Concerns/academic commitments:

 1. Would you like to ask something specific?

 2. Are there any academic commitments (i.e. exams, review sessions, tutorials, etc.)

that you have over the next two weeks, list.

®

National Society of Black Engineers

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

 I would like to ask that the general body become more involved in activities. As a cohesive

organization, I do not think that we should have to beg for assistance or even bribe members to want

to become active.

 Finals are coming up in all classes, Soc 100 paper due

Project Rules and Specifications

Each of these specifications listed must be met in order to load test.

1. The bridge must span a 15-inch gap. Therefore, make your bridge longer than 15

inches, ideally 16 inches.

2. The bridge must have a top loading surface that is a minimum of 5 inches in length.

3. The maximum width of the bridge is 3 inches.

4. There are no limitations on height.

5. Only materials and tools purchased from or supplied by the NSBE Official Supply

Center may be used for this project.

6. Full pieces of wood that have not been cut or damaged in any way may be returned

and the team will not be charged for that piece.

However, if the team returns an excessive amount of material compared to what they

actually used to build the bridge, they may be assessed a cost penalty for poor inventory

management.

7. Additional supplies may be purchased from the Supply Center throughout the project

time. The NSBE staff will record and track material usage and costs.

8. ―Borrowing without permission‖ materials or tools from another team, or sabotaging

(including ―accidentally falling‖) another project is not considered acceptable

behavior.

9. Cutting tools are for the sole purpose of cutting wood. The utmost safety must be

used when handling these sharp cutting tools. Cutting tools may only be used on the

cardboard surface provided, and GREAT care should be taken to NOT put cuts in the

tabletops in the project rooms.

10. You can build beneath the road bed a maximum of 2 inches.

NOTE: a solid roadbed is not required.

®

National Society of Black Engineers

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

8. Construction Materials

The materials available and their costs are as follows:

Material Quantity Size Cost

Balsa Wood 1 piece 1/8" x 1/8" x 36" $3.15

1 piece 1/8" x 3/8" x 36" $5.85

1 piece 1/8" x 1/4" x 36" $4.45

a. Tools

Each team will be provided with the same basic set of tools that should be sufficient to complete the

construction—free of charge. Extra materials will be available based on the discretion of the NSBE Staff.

This means, if you break something, we will NOT necessarily give you a new item free of charge.

All sets will be checked on Thursday to make sure all necessary material is returned. Please return the

following list:

*Clamps (clothes pins)

*Cutting tools

*Ruler

*Glue

*Poster board to work on

Goal(s) of Program:

The Visitation Weekend is geared toward minority students with sophomore through senior status

interested in gaining a higher education in fields related to math, science, or engineering. The

purpose of this weekend is to educate the students about the various fields in which they can major,

and also to give a comprehensive view of collegiate life.

During the visitation weekend various roundtable discussions and workshops will be held on topics

such as: college applications, engineering majors, financial aid, and life as a minority student. This

year, to make the visitation more interactive, a new objective has been added, a mini project.

During this project, the students are to conduct the most efficient bridge, using the guidelines

included in the folder.

The ways to best incorporate these skills to succeed and to be become more aware of higher

education are to have U of I engineering students provide tours, conduct a student panel, and to

facilitate workshops that promote critical thinking skills.
