CLASS TITLE: ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT I

GRADE: 7

JOB SUMMARY

This position provides supervision, technical assistance and/or administrative support to County
agencies by performing the following essential functions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Include some or all of the following. Other functions, duties
and/or responsibilities may be assigned periodically.

Provides cordial, responsive and accurate customer service;

Assists senior department management as required;

Reviews and approves subordinate employee time sheets and vendor bills;

Initiates correspondence to customers, other County departments, external agencies, vendors and
businesses;

Enters information into computer to prepare or otherwise prepares, correspondence, bills,
checks, permits, statements, reports, records, receipts or other documents, copying information
from one record to another;

Performs accounting or bookkeeping activities under supervision;

Collects and accounts for cash and checks;

Make bank deposits;

Assists in the preparation of applications and accepts applications from the public for permits
and/or licenses;
Retrieves data or information from automated storage; and

Performs other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals,
professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports,
business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and
respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts,
interests, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to
apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions
furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several
concrete variable in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LISENCES, REGISTRATIONS

Possession of a Class C Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator’s License or the ability to obtain such
a license within thirty (30) days of appointment to position.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities
required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and
the ability to adjust focus.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree from accredited four-year college or university with major course work in
Business Administration, Public Administration or humanities; or three years experience in small
unit supervision or providing complex administrative support services to management; or an
equivalent combination of education and experience.

COMMENTS

This position is one contained within the Queen Anne’s County Civil Service System.
Appointees from outside County government must serve a period of twelve (12) months
probation during which time they may be terminated without notice or cause.
