Greetings. On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Virginia Association of Drug and Alcohol Programs (VADAP), thank you for your support of the association. 2004 was a productive year for VADAP. The Board is refocusing on the benefits of membership and I’ve included a list of these below. We remain committed to providing professional training and advocacy for the good of our field and member programs. I believe VADAP membership offers an outstanding value for the cost. If you have not already renewed your VADAP membership for 2005, please take a few moments to complete the enclosed application and send in with your payment. This has been a short legislative session. The focus for VADAP, and other substance abuse organizations, has been to request replacement of lost substance abuse funding, and Medicaid reimbursement for substance abuse services. Jack has been coordinating VADAP conferences for years, has been involved in every Summer Institute, and is the chair of the 2005 VSIAS Faculty. We all owe a debt of gratitude to Jack. 2005 Virginia Summer Institute for Addiction Studies
The Faculty for the 2005 Virginia Summer Institute for Addiction Studies has been busy developing this year’s event. The Summer Institute will be in Williamsburg again and will run from July 18 thru July 22, 2005. The costs for the VSIAS will be the same as in 2004: $350 for the week if you register prior to June 3, 2005; $395 for the week if you register after June 3rd; $85 per day if you register prior to June 3, 2005; $95 per day if you register after June 3rd. Over 600 individuals attended the 2004 VSIAS. So don’t be left out of this exciting event by waiting too long to register. Many skillbuilding sessions will be offered this year that will necessitate limiting the number in attendance to these classes. Although the focus at this year’s Institute will be on treating families and on treating populations with co-occurring disorders, there will continue to be a wide-range of topics presented. The above is only a partial list of offerings. There will be a full Prevention Track. We will be bringing in the editor of the book entitled Buzzed who will present on the current state of the field (what drugs are we currently seeing on the streets and what might be the trends.) Also, as a special surprise we will have after hours activities including the premier of the Mid-Atlantic ATTC singing group. We will have a chance to hear them prior to their cutting their first album and going on tour. We can be the start of their “roadies.” There will continue to be financial assistance available for participants this year. The faculty of the Summer Institute will again provide money to each of its three contracting Organizations (VADAP, VAADAC, SACAVA) so that additional members can attend. VADAP has decided to focus its share of these funds to assist those VADAP members who work in the private sector and are not eligible to receive funds targeted for CSB or Criminal Justice agency staff. DMHMRSAS will provide funds for staff from each CSB to attend. As of this date, it is uncertain whether the Department of Criminal Justice Services will provide funding for its employees to attend although verbally it has said that this appears to be likely. Details as to the specifics on each of these funding sources for scholarships will be announced.

The Summer Institute will again recruit working scholarship recipients. These individuals will provide such duties as introducing speakers, handing out and collecting evaluations, coordinating workshops for the speakers, etc. These recipients will be expected to work the entire five days of the Institute and will receive free tuition and a free room for the week at The College of William and Mary. Laurie Rokutani will again be the Registrar for this year’s event. The 2005 Virginia Summer Institute for Addiction Studies will be a grand event and experience for all. We on the faculty look forward to seeing you there.
Workforce Development Taskforce
The Consortium for Substance Addiction Organizations (CSAO) has formed a taskforce that is studying the current market place for substance use disorders employment. Soon member organizations of VADAP will be sent a Workforce Survey that we ask you to have all of your staff complete. We very much need the information gathered from this survey in order to aid us in determining our direction for future advocacy work. Many of us recognize that there is a great deal of competition in the market place for the best and brightest minds. The question remains: “Why would someone enter the field of Substance Use Disorders?” The reasons have likely changed over the past 30 years. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. The Taskforce is also looking at a marketing strategy that can be utilized at Universities to encourage those in the counseling field to consider substance use disorders as a career. 2004 Virginia Summer Institute for Addiction Studies
Wow!!! Nearly 700 people attended the 2004 Virginia Summer Institute for Addiction Studies. It was highly successful and easily the largest event of its kind ever held in the Commonwealth of Virginia. We have speakers from all over the country asking to present at our Institute as a result. VADAP members continue to be an active part of the Institute’s planning as faculty members and several of the past and current members have been presenters. Jack Mallery, with the Department of Human Services/Division of Mental Health Substance Abuse in Virginia Beach and a longstanding member of VADAP’s Board, is the Chairperson for the 2005 VSIAS. Cindy Blanton from Vanguard Services and Jerri Shannon from the Williamsburg Place, also serve as VADAP representatives on the Faculty. Cindy is also the Secretary for VSIAS. The Summer Institute has been a financial success beyond the wildest dreams of the few of us who sat together around a lunch table in Richmond three years ago planning the first Summer Institute. We leave this year’s event and enter the 2005 planning stage with nearly $90,000 in funds. VADAP did receive over $9,000 as its share of the proceeds of the Institute. We continue to look for ways in which we can improve the Institute. Please feel free to offer suggestions to the faculty on how we might be able to improve the Institute.

Williamsburg Place/The William J. Farley Center is currently recruiting for a Therapist/Case Manager to work in the extended care program of the Farley Center. This is a full time position with benefits. Qualified applicant should be an experienced
counselor possessing a Master’s Degree in Counseling, Social Work or related field.
