Below are details of our walks and events and boat trips for the next three months. If
you are able to publicise any of these it is helpful if you can put our website and/or
phone number alongside so that people can check details before turning up. High

Tue 7 July          Sea Shanties and Harbour Jug Band
7.30pm / 1½ hours
Hear about the origins of sea shanties sung by sea-going men recruited to work on
ships in years gone by and also see models of machinery worked by these men such
as a capstan. We will sing a few sea shanties ourselves before bringing it all together
with the Harbour Jug Band instruments. Be prepared to sing along and have fun, no
musical experience required. Fee £4 per head to include refreshments. BOOKING

A 7mile (11km) walk between the villages of Bosham (above) and Itchenor with ferry
rides in between. Bring a packed lunch and be prepared for muddy tidal paths. Fee
£2 per person. BOOKING ESSENTIAL. Meet: Bosham car park, pay and display.

Wed 15 July          Thorney Island Heritage Walk
9.50 for 10am start / 5 hours
A 7 mile (11 km) walk around the shoreline of Thorney Island, taking time to stop and
hear about Thorney Island now and in years gone by. With Alison McQuaid, Heritage
Outreach Officer, Chichester District Council. Bring a packed lunch and snacks.
Please note that the path is quite worn in places. Meet: corner of Thorney Road and
Thornham Lane, roadside parking.

Sat 18 July Chichester Harbour Long Ago: Family Fun
10am / 2 hours
A romp through the early history of Chichester Harbour through fun activities
involving worked flints, a Roman ship, Canute’s throne and King Harold’s crown.
Some of this event will include going outside so bring outdoor gear and wellies too.
In partnership with Chichester District Museum. Safety briefing 10am prompt. Fee £3

Wed 29 July Driftwood Sculpture
10am / 4 hours
Be inspired by Chichester Harbour and the guidance of professional sculptors
Ganesh and Elaine Kings to create a work of art with driftwood. Start collecting
driftwood now (store it in a dry place). Tools and natural dowling will be available
along with extra driftwood and completed sculptures for inspiration. You should bring
a board upon which to take your sculptures home. Bring a packed lunch. Fee £15
per person to include refreshments. BOOKING ESSENTIAL.Meet: Lifeboat Station,
off Bracklesham Road, Hayling Island.

August – Solar Heritage trips

Sat 8 Aug Cathedral To The Church Walk                9.50 for 10am start / 2 hours
for the walkA 4 mile (6km) linear walk from Chichester Cathedral to the church in
Bosham, passing through varied landscapes. Pub and cafés in Bosham. Return
independently to Chichester by bus (bus times will be available). Be prepared for
muddy paths. Cheapest parking is in Northgate and Avenue de Chartres (multi-
storey) car parks.Meet: Bell Tower next to Chichester Cathedral, West Street,
Chichester.
Tue 11 Aug Mud Hunt: Family Fun10am / 1½ hours Hear about why the harbour
mud is important for nature but can be dangerous for us. Eat worms, shrimps and
shellfish like the harbour birds! Then we go on a mud walk. Dress to get wet and
muddy. Safety briefing 10am prompt. Fee £2 per person. BOOKING

Sun 16 Aug Geology of Two Harbour Churches2pm / 3 hoursUnder the guidance
of local geology enthusiast David Bone, we will look for and identify the many
different building stones that make up Thomas à Becket church in Warblington
before moving on to St Peter’s church in Northney. Enjoy a cream tea on arrival at St
Peter’s (fee £3.50) BOOKING ESSENTIAL. Meet: St Thomas à Becket Church,
Warblington. From roundabout at junction of Havant Road (A259) and the A27, go
down Church Lane past the tower, there is space for parking outside the church.
Free minibus available for non car users, pick up from Chichester and Havant

Saturday 22 Aug Earth, Air and Water: Preparing your Artwork for Display
and Sale10am / 2 hoursYou’ve done the workshops, been inspired by Chichester
Harbour and now its time to think of submitting your work to our exhibition. This
workshop will help you to make the most of your photographs, paintings and
sculptures by learning and discussing how best to present them for display and sale.

Wed 26 Aug             North Common and Gutner Point                  2.20 for 2.30pm
start / 2 hoursA short walk at North Common to search for migrant birds, plus a
transfer to the extensive saltmarsh habitat at Gutner Point to view the high tide roost
of wading birds. Meet: in small free car park to North Common, Hayling Island. From
bridge on to Hayling, take first left towards Northney Marina and the Langstone
Hotel, but follow road round past the entrance to the marina and hotel, shortly you
will pass some houses on your left, look out for car park entrance (with height
barrier) on your left. Fee £2 per person. BOOKING ESSENTIAL. Free minibus
available for non car users, pick up from Chichester and Havant railway stations.

nightfall through the marina, the woods at Salterns Copse and along the harbour
shoreline, taking time to look out for and listen to bats using bat detectors. Bring a
torch. Safety briefing 8pm prompt.Meet: free visitors’ car park, Chichester Marina,
signposted off the A286 about 2 miles south of the A27 roundabout.

Texture in Acrylics10am / 3 hoursWe will begin by looking at the work of a number
of contemporary artists and then, working in acrylics on A3 sheets of paper, explore
the techniques they have used. Please bring your own acrylic paints and brushes.

Fishbourne with stops to look at features of geological interest and to hear about
how geology has helped to shape the landscape. With local geology enthusiast
David Bone. Free minibus ride back to the start either directly or after a pub lunch,
you choose!Meet: initially in the free visitors’ car park, Chichester Marina, signposted
off the A286 about 2 miles south of the A27 roundabout. We will then drive through
the barrier to park by the shoreline.

Heritage. A guide will help you identify the birds that spend the winter in Chichester
Harbour. All tickets to be booked in advance on 01243 513275.
Sun 20 Sept Beach Watch at Cobnor10.20 for 10.30am start / 2 hoursJoin in the
national shoreline survey, organised by the Marine Conservation Society, this
weekend of litter found on the shoreline and contribute to an ongoing national
database. Wear old clothes and bring gardening or rubber gloves. Bring a snack for
a short break. Please note that the shoreline is shingle and quite rough in places.
Meet: Hard Users Car Park, Cobnor House, Chidham. Take the road onto Chidham
and at the southern point of this road, take the private road to Cobnor (including
Cobnor Activities Centre), drive down and just past the turning to the Activities
Centre is the Hard Users car parking field on the left hand side; it will be signposted
for this event.

 Wed 23 Sept                 The Romans in the Harbour Museum open from 5pm,
talk at 5.45pm / 2½ hoursFishbourne Roman Palace will be open late especially for
us to have a look round and hear a short talk on Chichester Harbour in Roman
times. Then, at 6.15pm, we will leave to take a 1½ mile walk from the Roman Palace
site to the shoreline and along to the Chichester Harbour Education Centre at Dell
Quay where we will finish with refreshments. Free minibus ride back to the start.
