TORTUGAS MARINAS México es conocido como la capital de las tortugas marinas ya que 7 de las 8 especies del mundo anidan en nuestras costas. En el Golfo de México y Mar Caribe se encuentran algunas de las playas de anidación más importantes para las siguientes especies: • tortuga de carey • tortuga lora • tortuga verde o blanca • cahuama o cabezona En las costas del Océano Pacífico están algunas de las mayores zonas de anidación de: • tortuga laúd o baula • tortuga prieta • tortuga golfina Todas las especies de tortuga marina se encuentran en peligro de extinción. La colecta y venta de productos de tortugas está prohibida. No compre huevos, carne, artículos de carey, cremas y aceites, o productos elaborados con la piel tales como botas, cinturones, billeteras, etc. Todas las especies de tortuga marina están incluidas en el Apéndice I de CITES y su comercio internacional está prohibido. Si visita playas de anidación, asegúrese de que lo acompañe un guía acreditado. SEA TURTLES Mexico is known as the world’s capital for sea turtles because 7 of the 8 known species nest on our beaches. Along the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, Mexico hosts some of the most important nesting beaches for the following species: • Hawksbill turtles • Kemps ridley turtles • Green turtles • Loggerhead turtles Along the coast of the Pacific Ocean, Mexico also has important nesting sites for: • Leatherback turtles • Olive ridley turtles • Black turtles All species of sea turtles are in danger of extinction and are listed on CITES Appendix I, which prohibits international trade. Therefore, the capture and trade of sea turtles and their products is forbidden. Do not purchase eggs, meat, or other items made from turtle parts including tortoise-shell products, goods made of turtle leather/skin (e.g., boots, belts, wallets), and creams or oils. Visiting the nesting sites of sea turtles is a popular and rewarding experience. However, if you visit nesting beaches please follow these guidelines: • Use an accredited guide and follow his or her instructions; Siga al pie de la letra las indicaciones del guía. No compre riesgos. • Avoid touching or bothering the sea turtles; • Don’t hamper or obstruct their path; • Avoid illuminating turtles with flashlights or torches when they emerge from the water; and • Wait until turtles start to nest before approaching.
