Sweden's Sandvik AB has developed a new process to precoat rolls of stainless steel with thin layers of metals or metal oxides. The technique lets manufacturers bend, stamp, blank, punch, deep draw, and otherwise form the rolled colored stainless without discoloring or otherwise damaging the coating. Using coated stainless steel lets manufacturers skip past-processing steps such as anodizing and move directly to assembly. Sandvik provides two types of coating, Decorex and Santronic. Decorex colors stainless steel with titanium dioxide and other metal oxides for decorative products. Santronic is for electrical uses. Using the same technology, Sandvik can coat stainless steel with nickel to improve corrosion resistance and wear, with silver to enhance electrical contacts, and with tin to boost solderability.
